Summary: A Story Of Schooling

It was a bright sunny day and Anna was wearing her new shoes as she waited for the bus outside her house. Anna was a tall, skinny, shy girl that loved her new shoes, and could not wait to show everyone. The bus picked her up and took her to school. She walked into the school very confident.

Ever since Richard Rodriguez stepped into the world of education, he had a thirst for knowledge. Also, at a very young age, Richard began to see a divide between the two most important aspects of his life, his family and his education. Through out the essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, Rodriguez describes himself as a “scholarship boy” and defines the term as one who is a good student, but a troubled son. After reading “The Achievement of Desire”, Rodriguez explains through his personal experiences with education that there is a conflicting relationship between school and family. Rodriguez tries to convey a very important message to students that are similar to him in that there is a balance of education and family and without either, happiness

The group I had for this assignment was Rethinking Schools. Rethinking Schools opposes the common Core in all aspects. Rethinking Schools does not agree with how the Common Core was created or how it is being implemented. Rethinking Schools believes that the Common Core standards are not state standards. They believe they are standards at the national level. It is proven to be federal standards, because of the money incentive states could receive for adopting the standards. They believe that teachers are not prepared to teach it, and that there are not the resources available that are needed for it to be taught. Rethinking Schools also believes that it should not only cover the two subjects of language arts and math. Many times the Common Core is compared to NCLB when the organization says there are too many standardized tests being implemented. While driving in Denver a couple of months ago I looked over and saw a bus transporting elderly citizens who were not able to drive. Looking through their windows, a sad realization came to me. If you have to take a bus to get from point A to point B, you are most likely a second class citizen. Think about my logic. Who has to be bussed around? The very old, the very young, the disabled, and the poor. Our country marginalizes bus people. Sadly our nation does not value them. If you have to ride a bus, chances are that your voice is not heard and counted like the rest of the country.

All throughout elementary school and middle school, I was always one of those students who simply floated through every class. Despite holding quality grades in the most challenging classes offered, I never in my life had genuinely sat down to study. In fact, just the concept in itself was entirely foreign to me up until high school. This terrible habit is likely one that would have stuck with me not only throughout the rest of my academic career, but my entire life had it not been for Ms. Cohen’s formulaic comments.

Alexie is a Native American who grew up on the Spokane Indian Reservation in Eastern Washington State with limited educational resources. His experiences from his problem in his childhood was dealt in non-vocational education school who were his classmates and also including his teacher whenever he answer the questions in class he get ignore as by saying that make a stereotype like “ As Indian children, we were expected to fail in the non-Indian world.”(4) He would fight his way of getting his way in learning as he will fought those students who forcing him to be quiet in class from answering the question form the teacher. “The roots of education are bitter, but the fruit is sweet.”(Aristotle). Ever since I was a toddler, my parents would stress the importance of good grades and a good education. At a young age, I already had my mind set on obtaining the best grades possible. All throughout my early years of school, I thrived academically and was able to obtain outstanding grades. Years later, when I entered my sophomore year in high school, I set a goal for myself which was to obtain a 4.5 GPA. In order to achieve my goal of academic excellence, I would have to take rigorous honors classes, sacrifice hours out of my day, change my studying habits, and seek outside help for chemistry.

The issue of performing well in college has been a thoroughly debated topic for quite some time now; students and researchers alike have come together to discuss the matter, sharing their ideas and experiences. Whilst I’ve no business fancying myself any manner of expert on the issue, what I’ve come to understand in recent time is the sheer amount of importance one’s attitude truly has when it comes to schoolwork. Though this idea may be dismissed as laughable by some, we can see now perhaps more than ever that a positive, optimistic outlook can not only make college a more manageable, less stressful task, but also a task done well.

Contrary to the fact that higher education is being more sought after, teenagers are dropping out of high school at an alarming rate every day. Some people can choice to see this situation as a sort of social Darwinism for the weak fall short while the strong excel. Since this statement, in its own right, proves true people neglect the expenses this minority takes on society as a whole. The amount of time, money and effort given to these students is wasted after all these years for now they won’t even have the benefit of having a high school diploma. I believe that both the state and the student suffer when they are slowly eased out of high school by “Senioritis.”

Did you know having exceptional grades in school can regulate the rest of your life? Having satisfactory grades is a legitimately important condition of the outcome of your impulse. With excellent grades in your institution comes landing good jobs in the future that is to come. This is important in a financial standpoint. Congenial grades have a lot of tremendous outcomes that come with them, but it is impenetrable to obtain admirable grades that are superior 90%. Whenever it is conceivable, I use many strategies to conduct substantial grades, and I use those procedures to my advantage. Today is your lucky day because I have some great aspects that will benefit anyone who wants to keep up the good grades.

College seems to be a constant battle for students to do well in classes and remain above water. It is as if students are attempting to figure out what mixture of coffee, sleep, and studying makes for a perfect college student. With so much pressure being put into getting a degree and going into professional schools after college, it would be a helpful tool for students to know what makes an individual more successful academically than the next. Resent research by Ackerman and Heggestad (1997) has suggested that individual differences such as personality and motivation can be used to explain not only variance in academic performance, but also the process by which traits influence examination scores. Motivation is a composed of four main components including academic self-efficacy, attributions, intrinsic motivation, and achievement goals (Pintrich, 2002). O’Neil, Goffin, and Gellatly (2010) have found that when test taking motivation is high students tend to perform better on exams increasing the rate of academic success.

The research question that I would like to explore is “What is the relationship between attitudes towards grades and study habits?” This topic can be categorized under the Sociological concepts; deviance and social norms. In society, there is an emphasis on getting an education (which correlates with getting good grades), in order to earn a reasonable amount of money at the very least. If someone attends school just to get a passing grade nor do they study, they could be considered deviant. People should care about this topic because grades are a major part of getting an education. Grades represent acceptance from society, loved ones, and one’s self. Some people may come from a poor socioeconomic background so acquiring good grades are vital for success, whereas a wealthy person probably attends school because they would like to get the experience. Many just like to learn, as some may have the finances to attend college, or those who don’t have the funds value education so much that they are willing to take out loans. Individuals might study intensely because they are aware that money is coming out of their pockets. Some students work and/or have children so perhaps expect to receive a certain grade. Education is highly valued in my family. As a child, I grew up in a household with loving parents that both worked in Education. I was born in Hunan, China. The day of May 23, 2001 will forever be important to me. This is the day that my parents were united with me. Once I arrived at my new home in the United States, everything would change for me. Most changes were positive and others were setbacks or challenges.
