Corporations and educators have noticed the essential role of good writing skills in individual’s everyday life. Writing skills are one of the important qualifications employers and educators look for in professionals and college graduates. However, it turned out to be one of the serious deficiencies they possess. Professionals and college graduates mostly encounter these deficiencies in terms of not having the potential to practice good writing skills. Moreover, employers get disappointed with new college graduates writing skills. Formally, grammar was taught by the use
I immensely struggled when writing. Taking my scrambled thoughts and uncoordinated analysis and converting it into clean and understandable words on a page was arduous. I could not express my thoughts in proper academic format. I understood the importance of writing to every subject. It was essential that I learn to condense my ideas and feeling into coherent written word. After much debate, I decided that the best way to improve my writing skills was to take an advanced English course.
Instead of focusing on the different types of writing styles they will encounter in college and the workforce, most of the writing instruction students receive in their underclassman English courses at Carrizo Springs High School is primarily focused on preparation for the English Language Arts Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills Written Composition test, which has standards that are different than the outcomes they will be expected to accomplish in their dual credit English class and future college writing courses. Therefore, there must be a method implemented at Carrizo Springs High School and Southwest Texas Junior College to help students become more successful in dual credit English before they even step foot in that class. Students must understand that how they perform in that class will have an effect on their
Writing is a practice that most of us were taught when we were young. We were taught the basics of grammar, how to form a sentence, conjunction words, how to write paragraphs and more. Although we have learned this skill while growing up and have used the skill every year after entering kindergarten, this does not mean our writing process will ensure the best work. The authors that I chose each encourage their audience to excel in the art of writing in their own way to help with the writing process.
On the evening of Thursday July 23, 2015 I conducted an interview of Alex Benavides- a senior mechanical engineering major at Oklahoma State University. Benavides describes his experiences in his english courses as enjoyable, and notes that it helped him become a better writer. Benavides also states, that from personal experience during summer internships, that there are ineffective writers in positions where clean, flowing, and proper writing is a necessity. Proper grammar is essential in professional writing situations, according to Benavides, and is also often the first area critiqued by professors and teaching assistants. “You only get out what you put in when you write”, says Benavides, “be serious and grind, it makes the difference”.
Employers and educators realize the importance of good writing skills but many business employees have writing deficiencies, costing American businesses billions of dollars every year. According to a study conducted by the National Commission on Writing (NCW) in 2004, American businesses may spend close to $3.1 billion yearly on the remediation of employees’ writing deficiencies. Consequently, employers are dissatisfied with employees writing skills and even more disappointed in the skills of new college graduates.
Christine Love Thompson discusses strategies that she believes are the foundation to “good” writing in the article, “A Dose of Writing Reality: Helping Students Become Better Writers.” Thompson discovers that it is not correct spelling and grammar that makes a “good” writer; it is the voice of the student. She uses sources to support her claim that methods such as using graphic organizers and her constantly making corrections are not as effective as they seem. Thompson organizes the article to ensure better understanding of the process she went through to help her students become better writers.
When writing for school projects whether for a presentation to just too simply fulfill a requirement for the class one must utilize all avenues and resources to ensure the paper is well written and executed according to the guidelines of the school as well as the instructor. During this course, I chose to do a little research and analysis on Ashford University’s writing Center. In my reviewing of the writing center, I did find that it was
Individuals sometimes get judged for his/her writing skills. Some individual’s skills are not as developed as others for many different reasons. In high school, a student whose English skills are not developed can have a peer review his/her paper and will be
When David Crystal, shared that grammar was not taught in schools from 1960 through the earlier 1990s', I had clarity. Knowing that now helps me understand some of the deficiencies I have struggle with in my life concerning writing. I will discuss the effects of not being taught grammar in school, college, and the work place.
As a pre-Business Administration or pre-business student, I interviewed a professor from my department. I conducted a classroom observation of a required Business class. The class was MGMT 102 - Business Communications taught by Randall Benfield, which I thoroughly enjoyed as a visitor. With permission, I interviewed him on Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 10:30am during his office hours. The purpose of my interview was to gain insight about the types of writing necessary in the field of business. I wanted to understand how students and professionals differed between what they read, write, and research.
The demand of involvement of grammar in the literacy curriculum has decreased exponentially over the years, as more and more technology has been released. This could be good for many people to use proper grammar without learning it, yet could impact lives negatively as well. In a survey showed by managers "75 percent said it was worse for an applicant to have a spelling or grammar error on his application than for him to show up late or... swear during an interview..."(Fogarty). Managers state that grammar
The article “Are Writing Deficiencies Creating a Lost Generation of Business Writers?” by Quible and Griffin (2007) discusses the importance of the correctness of writing, with regard to grammar, and its impact on American Businesses. People rarely, if ever, refer to “correctness as a characteristic of good writing” (Hillocks, (1996), as cited in Quible & Griffin, 2007, p. 33). However, this is the main source of frustration in business environments: when employees’ insufficient writing skills hinder not only the company’s efficiency but also its ability to making a profit. According to Quible and Griffin (2007), “American businesses spend billions of dollars annually
