In the short story, “Fish Story,” Rick Bass uses suspense and conflict to strengthen the plot. The father advised his ten year old son to keep watering the 86-pound catfish for the barbeque party later that evening. Throughout the day, many people come to see the “swollen, gasping grotesque netherworld” and “monstrosity” of a fish, including the family who caught the fish to repay their debt of $67 (Bass, 2009, pg. 1).
Like blueprints, plot determines the way a story is shaped and is split into five different parts (Reid, n.d.). The family who caught the fish consisted of Jack, a fifteen-year-old troublemaker and his mother and father, who were both of riches and heavily intoxicated approached the young boy on separate occasions. These rigs have been tied to perfection, using quality components and have been rigorously tested by some of the most influential anglers in the carp fishing scene.
“The Bass, the River, and Sheila Mant,” by W. D. Wetherell, is an initiation story in which the symbols of fishing and Sheila Mant illustrate how the character of the narrator transforms from youth and innocence to sophistication and maturity. At age fourteen, it is typical for a boy such as the narrator to be beginning this transformation. Being innocent and naïve in a sense, the fourteen year old narrator gets an enormous crush on a seventeen year old girl named Sheila Mant and comes to believe she is what he loves most in life. For him, Sheila is a symbol of the maturity and sophistication he will eventually become a
While winning an arm wrestling match with his father, Manning feels the same thrill as hooking a giant fish. But he decides he would be happier if he “let him go, cut the line, keep the legend alive.” Reference of the father as a big fish stresses his physical and spiritual prominence. By referring to him as a “legend,” Manning clearly shows his awe and admiration for his father and his authorities as a guardian of the family. Though his father is growing weak, his former presence as a protective father will always remain as his legend. The reference to the big fish can also relate to Daniel Wallace’s Big Fish. The novel is similar with Manning’s story in that it is about a father-and-son relationship where Edward, the father, becomes a legendary big fish through his stories, just as Manning’s father is portrayed as a “Big Joe” for his significance in the family. Manning’s decision to free the fish reflects his desire not to destroy his father’s glory but preserve
I have been fishing my whole life, especially bass fish. I normally try to catch largemouth bass, which are very common where I am from. I was on my high school’s bass fishing team and we actually did pretty well for the most part, especially coming from such a small school. Largemouth bass are our prime target during these fishing tournaments. A largemouth bass is a white/green fish usually ranging from 1 pound to 6, they can also get up to 10 pounds as well. You can bass fish for fun or you can do it competitively such as tournaments. Tournaments usually go like every other tournament, you have two people and an adult captain that basically drives the boat and puts people in the best spots to catch bass. Every tournament usually starts at around 7 in the morning and goes through to 3 in the afternoon. After the time limit is reached, the boats then unload and get pulled up in the parking lot with the fish in them. The teams, then one by one go up to the weigh station and get a bag to put the
I am reading “The Bass, The River, and Sheila Maunt.” by W.D Wetherell. This story is about a boy that has two passions, a girl and fishing. His problem is that this girl dose not like fishing, and he will do anything to not look dumb in her mind. When he finally gets a date with her he hooks the biggest fish of his life. Now he has to figure out how to balance out both of his
In the Fish Story the Professor set out a fish on a white plate said to the students “Please observe the fish” then he walks out of the classroom with no further instruction then walks out. To me this basically means that you choose how you want to look at it and basically means you can direct yourself on anything like if you want to look deeper into the object or assignment or live..
I sat at the table enjoying my banana that quiet morning when my dad’s voice pierced through the stillness.
FISH, a proven way to Boost Morale and Improve Results was a great read and has opened my eyes to ways a professional in management should think, do, and manage their team if the team suffers from toxic attitudes. The book starts out explaining the main character Mary Jane, and how after her husband’s sudden death she had to take care of her two kids and put all her focus on her job to be able to make it in the world without him. By allowing this type of behavior and putting all her emotions and focus into her work made Mary Jane forget who she was and how to choose her own attitude. It took getting a promotion and having to deal with a team that she knew little about, except from the rumors the other departments said about them, to meeting a guy at a local fish market and learning the four practices to open Mary Jane up, and realize the secrets to a successful team and standing up for what she believed in to realize that it takes the small things in life to have fun, be happy, and make a difference in someone or multiple peoples life’s to making a toxic waste dump become a chairman award winning team!

For eighty-four days, old Santiago has not caught a single fish. At first a young boy, Manolin, shared his bad fortune, but after the fortieth luckless day, the boy’s father tells his son to go in another boat. From that time on, Santiago works alone. Each morning he rows his skiff out into the Gulf Stream, where the big fish are. Each evening he comes home empty-handed.
I should have never ever even had the idea of going in the ocean but… of course I just had to go in. I would have never imagined the horrors I was about to experience. All these thoughts keeping racing through my mind. What do I do? How can I escape? Will I live? I’m trying so hard to keep calm but that’s a little hard when there is a gigantic shark trying to kill me.
I’ve always had a soft spot for fish. It always seemed odd to me that people derived pleasure from tricking an animal into inflicting pain upon itself. Fish are just another unfortunate outlet that people take advantage of for sport. To condemn the practice would be hypocritical however. In fact, as I stood in the cold drizzle that had begun to fall on a grey, autumn day, I looked upon the exact spot where I had learned to fish. It was also at this time that my Grandfather began to educate me on his personal rules of fishing. Reflecting upon the beliefs he instilled in me, and reminiscing about our long days spent on the water, I closed my eyes, knowing that it was my responsibility to carry what he had preached to me in that crowded canoe through my life as an adult.
One day there were 5 teenagers, 2 girls and 3 boys, roaming around a railroad . There names were, Selena, Jacy, Chewy (that’s just a nickname) Ramon, and Zack. They didn't know this wasn’t just an ordinary railroad . It was a haunted railroad. They decided they would come back when it gets dark so they wouldn’t get caught. Because if they got caught they would be in trouble, cause this railroad was off limits When they were getting in there car and a person walked up to there car. His name was LongJohn Fisherman. “Did you guys just come from that abandoned railroad?” asked LongJohn Fisherman. “Yes, Why, said Chewy. “ Well you don’t know the danger of that railroad. It been abandoned for years. I suggest you don’t go there again. Unless you want to pay for your actions,” replied LongJohn Fisherman. “ What do you mean,” asked Selena. “ What I mean is that there is dangerous stuff around these railroads, and you should not be here. For example, there was kid who thought it would be funny to walked down these railroads to look for houses, then something happened and the kid disappeared,” strongly replied LongJohn Fisherman. “ Maybe we should listen to him,” said Jacy. “ No, this man doesn’t know what he is talking about,” yelled Zack. “ Yea, I’ve been in this town for 2 years and I never heard anything wrong with the railroad,” commented Ramon.
