Scene I
On a cold night, Bernardo is on night watch at the palace. He is joined by Horatio and Marcellus. Bernardo and Marcellus have seen a ghost the previous night. The ghost was the former king of Denmark, Old Hamlet, fully adorned in his armor. Horatio is a scholar who can confirm the appearance of the ghost. Horatio is skeptical that the ghost will appear, yet when the ghost does, Bernardo and Marcellus urge Horatio to speak to the figure. Horatio refuses, and the ghost suddenly disappears. Horatio then provides the two guards and the audience/readers with the political background between Denmark and Norway. Denmark is preparing for a potential invasion from Prince Fortinbras of Norway. Hamlet’s father killed Fortinbras’ father many years ago, and now that Old Hamlet has died, Fortinbras may attack to claim Denmark as his own. The ghost reappears, and Horatio speaks to him this time. Initially, the ghost stays silent. Bernardo and Marcellus attempt to overtake the ghost, yet their spears are only striking air. Old Hamlet is about to speak to Horatio until a rooster’s crow scares the ghost away. Horatio decides he must tell Hamlet, Old Hamlet’s son, about the ghost. Scene II
This scene takes place in Claudius’ and Gertrude’s royal court. Gertrude is Old Hamlet’s widow, and Claudius is Old Hamlet’s brother. The wedding of Claudius and Gertrude has just taken place. Claudius expresses to the court that he is still grief-stricken by his brother’s death, yet he is
Horatio’s first assumption is that the ghost has returned because of some resolved issues, he talks to the ghost and ask the ghost to speak and tell him what he can do to ease the spirits pain and bring glory to his name. Horatio then assumes that the appearance of the dead king’s ghost is a warning that something unpleasant is going to happen to their country. Third reasoning that Horatio states for the appearance of the ghost is that the ghost may be attached to a treasure or prized item that is causing the ghost to be troubled.
Growing up as the next in line for the crown, Hamlet was the son of Queen Gertrude and Old King Hamlet; however, Hamlet came home from school to find out that his father was murdered and his mother was now married to Old King Hamlet’s brother. While outside with the guards late at night, the men encountered a ghost,

Claudius brings up the issue about Fortinbras plan to invade Denmark, he states the he has talked to Fortinbras uncle who told him that Fortinbras promised not to stop the plan to invade Denmark. Claudius sends Cornelius and Voltemand to Norway to settle the dispute. Claudius begins to talk to Laertes and Laertes asks the king could he return to France and Claudius lets him. Claudius asks Hamlet why does he look upset and his replies are kind smart aleck. Hamlet says that his father death is the reason why he is acting like that. Claudius gives Hamlet a speech basically telling him that losing a father
In scene one the ghost of Hamlet’s father appears to Horatio, Marcellus, and Barnardo. Horatio begs the spirit to speak (Act 1.Scene 1.), but it refuses. Horatio tells Hamlet. The Ghost appears to Hamlet and the ghost wants to speak in private so they leave (Act 1. Scene 4.).
The first problem in the play occurs when a ghost begins showing up at the castle. At the beginning of the play two guards stand outside of the castle speaking of a ghost they had seen twice before “this dreaded sight twice seen of us” (1.1.25). Horatio, a scholar, stands with the men when the ghost comes by again and Marcellus, a guard, says to Horatio “Thou art a scholar; speak to it Horatio” (1.1.42). After failed attempts at speaking with the ghost, it leaves and Horatio contemplates whose ghost it could have been. Marcellus asks Horatio “Is it not like the king?” (1.1.58) to which Horatio agrees and points out that the ghost wore the very armor the late King wore to battle with Norway. Horatio knew that he should consult Prince Hamlet about the appearance of the late King Hamlet’s ghost as perhaps he will know what to do. Claudius, brother to the late King, announces that he has married his brother’s wife
The story opens up with the guards and Hamlet’s friend, Horatio, seeing the ghost of Hamlet’s father and attempting to speak to it. Afterwards, Horatio speaks of the possibility that the ghost is hinting at a possible revenge attack from Fortinbras of Norway on their kingdom. This could be possible foreshadowing and setting-up of future events to take place. After this sighting, the story shifts towards the wedding between Hamlet’s uncle and Hamlet’s mother. During this wedding, we are first introduced to Hamlet. Hamlet displays his grief
Horatio and Hamlet ascended the castle one night to visit with the ghost, and when they reached the top, the ghost told Hamlet that he was murdered by the new king, Hamlet’s uncle, and explains to him that he should kill his uncle, but without bringing
The Ghost of the previous Danish king in Hamlet is a potent element that causes Prince Hamlet variety of reactions toward the world around him and the unexpected killer, King Claudius. 1) In the beginning of the play, the ghost of King Hamlet is a silent, ominous specter. Decked in the regalia of war, the ghost’s significance within the scene is to both raise the possibility of a possible Norwegian attack following recent conquests of land, as well as hint towards bad things to come within Denmark. Along with this, the ghost’s silence leaves the audience in suspense for the purpose of its presence and what message the dead king may hold.
The ghost first appears to three soldiers on guard: Bernado, Francisco, and Marcellus, along with Horatio, a friend of Hamlet and visitor to Denmark. Bernado and Marcellus desire to reveal the ghost they have witnessed for the past

A young man named Horatio, who is a school friend of Hamlet, has been told of the apparition and cannot believe it, and one of the officers has brought him there in the night so that he can see it for himself.
