The article “The Struggle of Our Time: Human Nature vs. Mother Nature” explains the causes and effects, as well as the steps to counteract climate change. Moisés Naím associated the humanity’s effort to reduce climate change with an individual’s effort to lose weight. Naím stated that people who are on a diet tends to give up before achieving their goal, and goes back to their old ways of eating. The author has indicated that the same thing happens to the humanity’s effort to reduce climate change. Moisés Naím pointed out the effects of climate change in this year. He affirmed that this year is the “hottest on record.” In addition, the strongest hurricane ever recorded was experienced this year. Moreover, the author mentioned that climate change is caused by human activities: transportations, how our cities were built, products we consume, how we heat/ …show more content…
Yesterday morning, I drove my father’s car to go to a store. Last night, I forgot to turn off our batahroom light. Moisés Naím’s article opened up my eyes. We really need to make an effort to reduce climate change. Its effect is costing people’s lives. According to the article, this year is the hottest on record. We felt this effect in Hawaii. Last summer was the hottest temperature I’ve experienced since coming to Hawaii. A lot of people from other countries suffered stroke due to the hot weather. In order to counteract climate change, we need a …show more content…
He explained his topic really well. The reader can get a glimpse of what the article is about by reading its title, “The Struggle of Our Time: Human Nature vs. Mother Nature.” His introduction made me want to read his whole article. Moisés Naím talked about the effects of climate change this year. It is terrifying. While reading this part of the article, I was imagining what is going to happen in the future if we don’t make a step to help mother
Climate change is an issue that affects all, and yet some do not even accept that it exists. Climate change is causing glaciers to melt, sea levels to rise, more droughts and heat waves to occur, and even more intense tropical storms. These are just a few examples of the effects of climate change, but there are even more devastating effects such as polar bears having to search for new food sources, on land, because of the sea ice they rely on for hunting melting at a more rapid pace. Climate change enthusiasts have even said, “The struggle to save the global environment is in one way much more difficult than the struggle to vanquish Hitler, for this time the war is with ourselves. We are the enemy, just as we have only ourselves as allies”(“Al”). The effects of climate change are indeed devastating, but the question I want to find an answer to is how do we lessen the effects of these effects that climate change causes? The reason I want to find a solution to my question is that I believe that the Earth is counting down towards catastrophe, and a solution must be found to save it. To find an answer to this question I explored five sources, all of which are articles.
An urgent issue, climate change is undoubtedly a sweeping global dilemma of paramount importance. Though most people are aware of this fact, many either choose to ignore it, or acknowledge it, but take no action against it. Those who do choose to take action usually attempt to combat climate change by using the methods that are most commonly discussed: becoming more energy efficient, recycling, and reducing emissions through using more sustainable transportation. Though these actions are helpful, they are not the most efficient way to counter climate change.
The world’s climate is changing, and the effects of it will not only affect the inhabitants and the planet, but also humans. Everyone usually only pays attention to the weather on a weekly or even a monthly basis. However, humans don’t pay attention to the changes that they are causing. Very few people actually accept that they are the ones who are causing it and that they are also the ones that can help with the issue. It is time to take action on this problem that will only continue to cause horrible consequences and the only way to do that is having humans change their ways. Even starting with the smallest way can have a dramatic change if everyone is doing it.
As Earths average temperature increases every year, the discussion of climate change has become a significant topic in the scientific community. Human activities such as powering factories, running automobiles or something as simple as burning wood for heat, emit dangerous greenhouse gases. What makes these greenhouse gases so detrimental is that they absorb the heat radiating off of Earth and keep it in the lower atmosphere creating a “blanket” of warmth around the Earth’s surface. This causes a drastic increase in the Earths average temperature. Due to the rise in temperature, the polar caps have been melting faster than ever, this is dangerous not only because of the risk of floods and sea level increase but ocean water will become less saline and ecosystems will be destroyed, impacting humans just as much as marine life. In the article, Understand faulty thinking to tackle climate change by George Marshall, Marshall states that most people in our world today do not care about climate change because it will not affect them, “Which points to the real problem: climate change is exceptionally amorphous, … no deadlines, no geographic location, no single cause or solution.” (Marshall 2014). Because the author makes it clear that climate change is indeed a great plight, and fails to be acknowledged by people, it is a significant matter that should be discussed
One of my earlier classes discussed how Hurricane Katrina waived away millions of lives and left a furious mark behind. The hurricane was caused because of environmental factors. I was a live witness to the Tsunami that hit Asia few years ago. It not only destroyed lives, but devastated property as well. A developing country like India faced this calamity cause of flooding, soil erosion and climatic changes. It tingled my brain cells to realize we are the ones flushing in carbon dioxide, which malignantly shapes the weather by increasing the warmth. The heat is soaring to extremities and nobody cares. Everybody claims hazards is caused by Mother Nature. Unfortunately, they do not observe the finger pointing to themselves. Hence, Friedman highlights the issues and consequences of Global Warming as evidence and remarks how embracing clean energy sources could light up lives in America. His use of examples, facts and emotional appeals persuades readers to believe the extent of damage we have done to the
Global warming is a controversial topic, widely discussed among today’s society. It is significant because it deals with the opinions and beliefs of many individuals. It also creates controversy and provides society with the opportunity to express itself and its beliefs. Many people believe that the conditions of the climate have no correlation to human behavior and that nowadays, people exaggerate the impacts of climate change. However, these individuals fail to recognize the truth behind the topic. Global warming is both a real and serious threat to our existence that humans must address by altering their actions and behaviors.
Soon after the new year began, 2014 was officially declared the hottest year on record. Perhaps this data would not be enough to indicate a trend on its own, but it is reported that the ten hottest years on record have all occurred after 1997 (Gillis 2015). This trend is alarming to scientists, as it confirms that the Earth is in fact warming on a global scale. As climate change continues, there are various problems that the world’s nations are going to have to address. As previously mentioned, climate change is already causing extreme weather deviations. As the temperature continues to rise, there will be more intense and frequent droughts, floods, hurricanes, and heat waves (National Wildlife Federation). Soon enough, people are going to have to start combating these effects of climate change and looking for new ways to protect themselves from the weather at its worst. Not only will severe weather deviations put people in more danger, but so will the bad effects on our health. Lack of clean water, impaired foods, amplified heat exposure, and accelerated spread of blood-transmitted diseases are all plausible risks associated with global warming (Bowen, Ebi, Friel, and McMichael 2013). These inevitable magnitudes of global warming are the root of what makes climate change a social
Climate change is a global problem that is affecting Earth’s delicate ecosystem. Many problems are present in our world today, such as starvation, flooding, heat waves, droughts and disease. These issues are likely to worsen as climate change takes its toll. In the past, the cause of this severe climate change was unknown. Today, it is known that manmade climate change is occurring. Scientists have discovered that humans have had the greatest impact on the Earth’s ecosystem. Human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, are causing the Earth to get hotter. Although humans are not the only cause of climate change, we contribute to this world wide problem because of the actions we take, which if affecting us now and will continue to affect us in the future.
Climate change and its role in the world is a heavily debatable topic that was brought to the spotlight in the 1960s. The main controversies that surround climate change stem from four main arguments. They are “is there global warming? How much global warming is occurring? What causes global warming? And can humanity affect it?” Scientist and analysts study and answer these questions differently forming several different distinct sides to the matter. As a result three arguments and positions have formed about climate change. The three sides consist of those who refuse to believe there is any climate change occurring in the world that the change in the weather and climate are so insignificant that they are of no concern; climate change is real however it is a natural process the Earth undergoes, and climate change is real, it’s a threat, and its man made.
Global Warming is a recurring problem not just for the United States, but the entire world. Although it is an international crisis, Americans should be encouraged to be eco-friendly at home. Even though our homes put out a lot of energy, driving is terrible for the environment and pollutes the air with fossil fuels, therefore people should think about their transportation methods and consider cleaner ways to get around. We as individuals make only a small difference, cities need to encourage large-scale projects to help because without the push to do something nothing will ever be solved. Most importantly, in a country that routinely denies the existence of Global Warming, individual contributions to the fight of Global Warming are more important
*Today, we as human beings are witnessing problematic issues throughout the world that are effecting mankind. Everything from racism, to world poverty, and even radicalize terrorism just to name a few. But outside of the scientific world, many of us fail to understand the long-term effects that global warming and climate change could have on us throughout the world. After observing the 2015 Paris Climate Conference, I truly did not take into account personally, how important this whole concept is. But after taking this class and researching further and further into the topic, I now understand the severity of it all. There are various reasons that exists that are pertinent towards why this topic is highly important to all of humanity. Two of these evidences lie in the severity of hurricanes, and the potential increase droughts and heat waves.
Throughout the world right now, there are several huge events leaving families homeless, injured, passed away, or more. Many people don’t realize that this could’ve been prevented, and now many people are seeing the true harm and danger of climate change.
Usually people pay attention on daily weather changes and how the weather will be through the week or the month, but do we pay attention on climate change how it affects our lives. Did we ask ourselves what are the causes of climate change? How climate change impacts our activities? Can we do something to solve this big issue before to turn to a big disaster? These questions make me think deeply how we work to solve this problem because the earth is the only place so far we can live on it. Climate change has become a worldwide problem and this issue affects human lives, environment, social and economic. The change in climate has serious impacts on our natural ecosystem and as human we should face it before causing great catastrophe such as water availability, agriculture, rising sea levels and health. Many studies recognize that sign of change is increasing in average temperatures, snow and rainfall, patterns are shifting, and extreme climate events are becoming more common in our days. These changes are expected to grow if we don’t solve the issues or the causes of climate change.
Since the beginning of the Earth’s existence, climate change has occurred. Temperatures, sea levels, quantities of gases in the atmosphere, and levels of precipitation have risen and fallen over a span of billions of years. However, over the last two centuries, climate change has been far too drastic to be caused by natural forces alone. Globally, the alterations in temperatures, sea levels, precipitation, melting of ice caps and glaciers, and violence of natural disasters are clearly caused by another factor, in addition to natural climate drivers. Acknowledging the fact that climate change is indeed occurring, the blame for this change must be placed somewhere. Combined with natural causes, it is evident that the activities of human beings are a significant cause of global climate change.
Each year, the temperature of the Earth only gets worse due to human actions. “Global warming is already responsible for some 150,000 deaths each year around the world, and fear that the number may well double by 2030” (Gould). This statement proves that the choices we make and activities we take part in, affect the population’s health negatively. Humans do not have the capacity to easily adapt to extreme temperature or to any other events resulted by global warming. All the direct and indirect effects of extreme weather only hurt humans because we create this situation. Health is one of the main aspects that is negatively impacted due to the rise of temperature. Therefore, our priority should be to maintain a healthy lifestyle. But all these problems around us make it impossible to be healthy in many ways and this results in damaging the human development since the pregnancy and after it, lungs problems, and mental stability issues.
