1. Why did SYSCO decide to address only two questions with its new BI software and how does that approach compare to the “best practices” in the companion reading “Secrets to managing business analytics projects”?
SYSCO decided to address initially only two questions in order to facilitate the learning process of the software by using just a limited and straightforward array of its features. In this way, the 100 operating companies and 45,000 employees would become comfortable with the software’s functionalities, and aware of the innovative power of BI. In detail, a strong resistance will come from some of the operating companies that already have “their own small-scale business intelligence applications in place”. These companies may not see any valid reason or advantage to switch and implement a new software system. Furthermore, another obstacle that SYSCO might confront will be the objection from the existing managers and IT experts averse and incapable of using a new software with different functions. Forecasting analytics will enable SYSCO to make appropriate upfront decisions and monitor customers as well as the industry. Extraction and data mining are also useful tools that will positively affect SYSCO’s decision-making process. Lastly, consulting support and employees’ training will facilitate the implementation of the new software in the company. BI deduces the connections between business entities by evaluating copious volumes of historical data which supports decisions. BI has four major components consisting of a data warehouse, business analytics, business performance management, and a user interface.
The ability to compete on analytics is made possible by certain qualities some companies possess which allows them to collect and use immense amounts of data in a way that differentiates the success and practices of those companies amongst any other businesses. Davenport and Harris (2007) define analytics as “extensive use of data, statistical and quantitative analysis, explanatory and predictive models, and fact-based management to drive decisions and actions” (p. 7). Therefore, to be able to compete on analytics, a firm must not only use the data to extrapolate and execute strategies and models in order to drive business, but also to use that data better and smarter than their competitors. This requires forward thinking and continual developments of current analyses and practices. With regard to Davenport and Harris’s criteria and concepts on the ability to compete on analytics, Old Navy LLC’s practices will be analyzed to find whether the company is able to compete, is a competitor, and how it competes, if at all.

I am responsible for a project to deliver a new business intelligence facility that will consolidate reports currently provided in different systems. Phase one recommends a suitable software platform and prepares a proposal to secure funding.
As we discuss the possibility of emerging into business intelligence software we must keep in mind the overall purpose of using any type of software is to reach strategic goals in order to increase market shares. I will discuss how business intelligence software will allow us to meet those strategic goals. We will establish what type of information and analysis capabilities will be available once this business intelligence software is implemented. We will discuss hardware and system software that will be required to run specific business intelligence software. Lastly, I will give a brief synopsis on three vendors (IBM, Microsoft Microsoft and Oracle) that are dominating the business information software
MicroStrategy and Tableau are two market leading BI tools today in the market. Whilst MicroStrategy has had a 14 year head start as a company over Tableau, and as such has a much larger scope in the solutions they provide, they have been historically ‘Enterprise focused’. On the other hand Tableau has from the start waved the self-service BI flag. With a shift from both companies, MicroStrategy’s towards end user experience and self-service BI, and Tableau’s towards a robust enterprise edition in the last few years, a lot of businesses are at crossroads when to decide between the two.
