Arachnophobia is an extreme or irrational fear of spiders. Someone is arachnophobic when their fear of spiders reaches a level that it is irrational, illogical and unhelpful. Arachnophobia is an everyday fear, it changes what people might do with their day depending on the likeliness of seeing a spider. As with all phobias the cause or causes can be unknown, and can vary from person to person. Some people do have a very real experience that causes initial fear, which can then stay with them, and, as they avoid the object they are scared of, they reinforce the negative experience, and over time develop a phobia. The traditional old-fashioned way to treat arachnophobia is via systematic desensitization link to phobias and fears. Systematic desensitization
I am afraid of spiders, because when I watch them on TV and they are in people’s bed and houses and if they bite you it makes a giant bite mark as big as a your hand, its inside is blue and the outside is red.
After the exposure therapy, they have not been scared of spiders ever since. That is another way
Introduction: Almost everyone has an irrational fear or two—of mice, for example, or your annual dental checkup. For most people, these fears are minor. But when fears become so severe that they cause tremendous anxiety and interfere with your normal life, they’re called phobias. A phobia is an intense fear of something that, in reality, poses little or no actual danger. Common phobias and fears include closed-in places, heights, highway driving, flying insects, snakes, and needles. However, we can develop phobias of virtually anything. Most phobias develop in childhood, but they can also develop in adults. If you
“A phobia is essentially a human being's irrational fear of something. It could be an object, an animal, a situation or an environment. These fears are persistent, intense, excessive and unrealistic, which is primarily why phobias are deemed irrational. A clinically phobic person's reaction to what scares him/her may seem extreme and the fright may not appear to be justified.” (Grenier et al., 2011) A specific phobia is known by a deep and persistent fear of an object or situation which becomes anxiety. The anticipations of the stimulus may make the symptoms arise. Many individuals who suffer with this disease will avoid the stimuli. They will take extra steps and precaution to have no contact. The main characteristics that the DSM-5 describes for this disorder includes “the individual suffering from a persistent fear that is either unreasonable or excessive, caused by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation, exposure to the stimulus usually results in an anxiety response, the sufferer recognizes that their fear is disproportionate to the perceived threat or danger, individuals take steps to avoid the object or situation they fear, and the phobic reaction, anticipation or avoidance interferes with the individual’s normal routine and relationships, or causes significant distress. At last, the phobia that the person has to be constant for a period of six months or longer.” (American Psychiatric Association,
A Phobia is a persistent, abnormal or irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid the feared stimulus. Phobias are largely underreported. An estimated 6 million people
Phobias are a type of anxiety disorder that causes people to persistently become extremely irrational and strongly avoid/object a particular thing or situation when in their presence. The causes of phobias are still largely unknown, but what we do know is we all have fears in some shape or form; whether it be a common phobia such as: animals, insects, reptiles, the dark, acrophobia (heights), drowning, micro-phobia (germs), claustrophobia (closed spaces); or something less common such as: fear of rain or fear of beards.
Pamela Kulbarsh (2014) once wrote in her article titled Phobic Disorders: What Do You Fear? that “to be defined as a phobia, the fear must cause some level of physical or psychological impairment. […] Phobia is a fear gone awry. A phobia twists the normal fear response into something that is difficult, if not, impossible to control.” There are many different types of phobias; however, there are four ways in which a phobia can be categorized. The four different categories that a fear can be classified are as follows: animal, environment, situational, and injection/injury. A phobia involving an animal means a person has an intense fear of any particular animal whether it be a dog or a spider. The next type of phobia is an environmental phobia
In this paper I will be describing phobias and fear, but more specifically coulrophobia (the fear of clowns) and Monophobia (the fear of being alone). I also will describe possible causes of phobias, the history of phobias, how fear is helpful in small amounts, what fear does to someone and how to defeat it. Fear is present in all people but some more than others and I would like to know why. The definition of a phobia is “an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something”. Phobias are never simple and often do not have a simple answers or cures, but there are ways of dealing with phobias. There are some treatments that can help you get over your fears. Phobias are not easy to get into without getting into very
My brother Jack suffers from arachnophobia; th at is why he cannot stand being around spiders and even the sight of them scares him to death.
Of the many disorders presented in chapter 15, I find phobias the most interesting. A phobia is an anxiety disorder. It is an intensive fear of something that has little to no danger at all. Phobias can range in many different varieties such as; acrophobia which is the fear of heights, arachnophobia which is the fear of arachnids otherwise known as spiders, and claustrophobia which is the fear of closed spaces.
A behavioural psychologist by the name of Joseph Wolpe helped clients in getting rid of their phobias in a process that would be much quicker than the process of psychodynamic which is the explanation that humans functioning is based on interactions of drives and forces which occur within the body such as unconsciousness and the various structures of personality. The basis of psychodynamic was introduced by an Austrian neurologist, Sigmund Freud. The reason Wolpe conducted this study was to find the most effective way in to perform systematic desensitization to eradicate people’s phobia. The hypothesis which Wolpe used was that to remove people’s phobia a fear should be combined with something that is also relaxing to the body and that eventually
Everyone experience fear occasionally in their life, but there are some who experience fears that are so intense that their daily lives are disturbed. An extreme fear towards a specific object or situation that is relentless and illogical to the point that a person avoids confronting the situation or object at all cost is known as a phobia. This anxiety disorder can interfere with the a person’s body and mind causing severe symptoms and disturbances to one’s everyday life, eventually leading to long hours of treatment with professional helpers. Many theories have been proposed to explain how phobias have developed, but the real challenge is to propose a
A phobia is something bigger than a fear. It is something that makes us internally cringe by just thinking of it. It’s that little thought that makes your heart race and your fingers tremble like a leaf during a storm. The reason you may have a phobia is because something traumatic happened to you during your childhood or even adulthood. You may also be afraid of something because the size of it, how dark it is, or it intimidates you. About.com states ‘’we no longer need to consciously think about certain behaviors, as they simply ‘’come naturally’’.’’ Meaning once you get used to doing your daily routine it will be hard to change one step. If you have been afraid of dogs since you were a child it is not going to be simple to just walk up to one and pet it. It takes time but with practice you can conquer your fear for
Are you the kind of person that is afraid of them because of what you have heard of them? Are you someone who is allergic to them because of the kind of reaction you have gotten from a sting or seem someone get. Or, do you tell yourself as long as I don’t bother it, it will not bother me. Most of the animals or insects we are afraid of it’s because of an interaction that we’ve had with them.
However, phobia can even cause people to risk their health. For example, the fear of dentists can leave people suffering from it willing to risk the health of their teeth in order to avoid having to go through an exam or procedure ( MacKay). When one knows about an upcoming confrontation, it can be the reason why one can not sleep or finds it hard to focus on important tasks. Due the change in daily routine, this unrealistic fear can interfere with the ability to socialize, work, or go about everyday life, brought on by and object, event or situation. But even animals have anxieties and phobias just as every human being (www.phobia-help.de). A phobia is an irrational fear, one knows that the object or situation, one is scared off, can not hurt one, but one is still afraid. A reason for this is that the human mind can not distinguish what is real and imaginary. When one has uncontrollable anxiety attacks, he loses rational judgement, leading to complicated problems. However, anyone can develop a phobia, men and women, teens and young adults, and elderly lady or a one-year-old boy (MacKay).
