Tajania,
I think you did a great job summing up your opinions and also making them easy to understand at the same time. I agree with you that the relationship between both the victim and the offender is important when trying to understand what went horribly wrong and also what led to the murder suicide situation. I also agree that the fatality review team approach should hold offendersaccountable for their actions as well. However I do not agree with you as far as your opinion on officers not being in danger when responding to domestic violence calls. I think they are in great danger because they do not know what the end result of the call will be. For example in my post at the end I mentioned how a rookie officer was killed following up
This essay is not attempting to push the ideology that the main issue isn’t because of them. However, the fear and hatred that is driven behind everyone on both positions is being perpetuated by the amount of negative coverage that this issue is receiving. In psychology, there is a term called confirmation bias, which is used to describe a mindset where people will only seek out information that conforms to their preconceived notions about something they believe to be true. (Fontinelle) Because of this, those who are in that mindset will be unlikely to be convinced otherwise that they are wrong. The fact that police are generally only talked about negatively in the news will almost force an individual who keeps up with mainstream media to see only negative things about police officers, and start to believe that police officers are not as trustworthy as they should be. This creates an immediate confirmation bias in people’s mind, which is a problem when the issue is already heated. Statistically speaking, the majority of officers are not the same as those being covered in the news. Good officers, alongside bad officers, have been seen as problematic because of the excess police brutality coverage, which in return negatively affects the entire police
- Talisha begins the call with the client with the strong intro, followed by recapping the client's concerns.
I had a feeling you would respond aunt Ramona Aceves because your in the field. I just believe you don't have to be apart of war or apart of any police department to know that killing is wrong. Being someone who was molested and harassed by an officer for no reason other then my cars license plate was typed in wrong and came up as stolen a few years back, I know that there are still bad cops in the world and although I hate that these bad ones seem to out way the good ones....they do. That's the police departments fault for not taking action on the several that suffer from some sort of PTS and still legally hold a gone. Things escalate too quickly these days. My dad said in the old school days people would just get beat with batons and pepper
Over the last few years, many citizens across the country have been stepping up and voicing their opinions of police brutality. Thanks to many recent amateur videos, there are many cases where I feel police could have handled situations differently. It is important that police should use lethal force only as a last resort. When there are no laws enforced on the people who enforce them, total anarchy can
Despite the regular reports in the news about police shootings in recent times, the overall picture does not show an excessive problem. In over 14 million arrests performed, only 3,600 people are shot each year, with only 1,000 being fatal.. This number seems to be huge, but when one considers that there are an estimated half a million police officers in the U.S. this number becomes rather insignificant by statistical standards. This does not eliminate the need to investigate such instances of the utilization of deadly force. It cannot be considered capital punishment. In essence the officer becomes judge, jury, and executioner. It takes away the suspects right to a fair trial by their peers.
Have you ever thought about what happens if a person breaks a law? What if this individual breaks a minor law and creates a larger problem? A strong topic is upon our society when it comes to law enforcement and the tough physical and verbal oppression that they have the potential to put on people when it comes to breaking the law. Police officers are supposed to be society 's saviors, guardians, and our friends. However, when things do not go quite right, and when someone breaks the law, there will always be that chance that things could escalate. These officers are supposed to deescalate situations and solve problems. That is what society relies on them at any given moment. Sometimes it takes an escalation of force to deescalate a criminal situation. This is why society sees the men and women in uniform with weapons capable of hindering life to the fullest. However, when this force is used and abused, it creates problems. The public eye becomes weary of the police in many different ways for using excessive force to deescalate a situation. Excessive force and police brutality are often caused by depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, as well as other mental disorders; due to the way they are portrayed by the media, excessive force and police brutality have a direct effect on the American society as well as fellow officers in all branches of law enforcement.
Because of police brutality, communities won’t trust the police anymore. The society needs to find a solution to police brutality. Police officers should have the goal of building trust and forming a relationship with communities and citizens especially with African Americans. I think that an effective solution like psychological evaluation would help monitor cops who shows signs of mental disturbance that might conflict with their work. Additionally, when the police are writing their report paper about an incident that happened, the police should try not to cover up the incident but rather write what really happened. Another effective solution is that, the police officer should be able to make good decision. For example the police should
Protecting and serving is the promise guaranteed by police officers, who put their lives in potential danger daily. Police officer’s right to use lethal force is being questioned due to a current bad reputation. A few negative cases should not triumph the countless positive things that police officers do for their community. A police officer who cannot use lethal force cannot easily protect the public and themselves in a dangerous situation. Police officers deserve the right to use lethal force to protect themselves, maintain public safety, and for an intimidation effect.
Over the past decade, police brutality has covered major headlines because officers have acted out in ways that have made citizens question their motives. Things such as unjustified shootings, deadly chokings, and rough treatment have all added to the constant problem of police brutality in the black community. Annoyingly, the police officers responsible for the killings and abuse are not held for long before they are discharged to their normal routines. Since many people believe that the issues of police brutality is based on race, officers should be held accountable for their misconduct. Accountability will permit officers to treat all with equality; therefore using the appropriate amount of force on everyone. Often cops are indicted in less than 1% of killings, but the indictment rate for citizens is 90% which is a major problem. If someone does wrong they should suffer the consequence no matter who they are. As a result of misconduct officers tend be mistrusted by their communities. Deaths in the black community often stems from police officers using excessive force such as assaults, beating and shootings.
In 2015, the Washington Post reported 987 fatal shootings by on-duty officers in their database (Lowery, 2016). These high numbers along with the role of media, have caused officers to be scrutinized more than ever. Many of the largest police departments were asked to implement new training and implement new policies that would decrease the number of fatal shootings (Lowery, 2016). The reform goals were to decrease the number of shootings that were not a crime, but sparked an outrage in communities (Lowery, 2016). If you look at these goals of reform, it does make sense to try to find ways to decrease deadly shootings that are not necessary. It just does not make sense to me to limit officers so much that they are not effective in stopping crime and we are ultimately ruled by
I want to inform you that I met today Ms. Kondric and I signed permission for gifted program testing for Tijana :). Ms. Kondic told me that was a stroke of pure luck that we there is one free spot for testing and that we would finish testing before the end of school year, so Tijana could start with gifted program in Merivale HS. But, I know that without your good recommendations Tijana's chances to winning such a great opportunity will be significantly lower.
There is no doubt that being a police officer is a difficult job; one which deserves much respect and admiration. Nonetheless, police officers have the capacity to injure more people than almost any other occupation in the country. Because of this, officers must be trained appropriately ensure that they are using these powers in the best interests of the community. Too often the use of force has been exercised unnecessarily. Police officers perceive a threat and immediately react to that threat. Of course, it is necessary for them to protect their lives and the lives of those innocent bystanders in a situation; yet they must use their
Police Officers respond to calls of domestic violence all the time. They break up the fights, they talk to both parties, they either make an arrest or they give a warning. They are out on the streets, protecting everyone from violent criminals, gangs, and are always there to help us. Who helps the families and the victims of domestic violence when a Police Officer is the perpetrator? During a study in the early 90’s, out of 728 officers who were surveyed, 40% of them had lost control and acted in a violent way towards their spouse. (Johnson, Todd & Subramanian 2005).
Hi Melissa, great examples! on the negative side of police perception is very sad to hear stories like this. Especially when the outcome is fatal and the damage impacts not only the suspect but their family and society.
So today my Blog concludes about todays world and how the Law enforcement revolves around it, first of all we have seen many issues about todays Law enforcement many cops have been going under for murder and mistreating people first of all not all cops are bad and not all people are good when someone breaks the law it is your duty as a citizen to oblige by the rules. When you are being arrested do not resist arrest because you are only making things worse. even if you think you did not deserve being arrested just follow the rules and state your case when in court. But now a days we have seen cops being murdered by people because according to some of the people cops deserve to be dead and they should not be caring weapons. But My question is
