• Assessment – Problems arising from the assessment are usually to do with time constraints. To properly assess how successful a lesson has been, a teaching assistant needs time to talk to children and ask what they have learnt and to fill in any assessment sheets given by the teacher. The best way to minimise these problems is to have simple, concise sheet devised by the teacher with sections for the teaching assistant to gill in which are relevant to what the teacher wishes to know about.
Pupils may also have difficulties with the work in general or they may have listening troubles. Asking pupils to evaluate their own work may enable them to identify their own problems and the teaching assistant can address these where appropriate.
The assessments have been done during and after the lesson in a variety of ways; verbal response, written response, pair and group work, and making posters as a visual outcome.

Describe, use and evaluate two different assessment activities used to check the learning of either individuals or a group of learners. Analyse the purpose of assessment and produce a written justification of your chosen assessment method. Use an extract from your teaching practice portfolio and reflect on how your feedback has informed your learners progress and achievement and how feedback from others has informed your own professional practice.
The teaching assistant must support the culture of the school and must work collaboratively with the classroom teachers in their responsibility for the development and education of children. The teaching assistant should use their knowledge and skills and must be involved in the planning cycle.
All assessments are a process of making fair judgements of the skills and knowledge of a learner when set against the criteria of the specific unit to which the assessment relates. The assessment must be appropriate to the individual, taking into consideration any specific needs they may have, this is to allow them to demonstrate any necessary skills that are specified within the unit being taken. All this is to ensure the assessment is valid. Once completed assessments must be signed and dated.
