Appropriate technology term is defined by Willoughby 1990 as “technology tailored to fit the psychosocial and biophysical context prevailing in a particular location and period”. The appropriate technology idea despite to be applicable nowadays first appeared as a concrete movement in the 70’s. Large-scale technology was the main point to be criticized for the appropriate technology defenders. Although the efficiency of big industries (regarding quantity) proportionate strength to economy, other points should be taken in consideration. The largest difference between conventional technology and appropriate technology is that in the first the processes are developed to dominate the nature, while that in the second the processes are developed to work with nature. Appropriate technology aims to set up simple processes with low cost that can be used to provide benefits in a small group (small-scale). Thus, the use of this technology has great applicability in developing countries in a wide range of processes.
Developing countries around the world present several problems, in different aspects of its structure. There are social and financial issues in almost all sectors of the countries. Countries less-developed generally present low human development index and an uneven income distribution. Despite the presence of several natural resources, developing countries do not own the technology required for the exploration of these resources. In developing economies the centralization of technology is even greater than in developed ones. This reality emphasizes the need for technology in the peripheral areas of these countries. The precarious structure for energy transportation and even for energy production are others aspects that interferer not only in the technological development of peripheral areas but in the human development as well.
