Throughout this course, a new perspective has provided us with the opportunity to take a look at many of the different ways in which the digital world has become one of the most dominant viewpoints of today’s generation, and how technology has taken over and welcomed itself into many aspects of our lives. This course paper will take a look at one topic of interest in particular, which in hopes will shed some light on a heavily discussed topic in the education world: does technology help or hinder the student. This paper will look to prove the point and discover more about the way in which technology has been incorporated into the classroom, both in an elementary context as well as a post-secondary context, and the effects that it has had on the student, the teacher, and the overall academic development that accompanies it. This paper will examine many of the different issues and successes that have been noted to be associated with the incorporation of technology within the classroom. By taking a sociological perspective and examining these issues using different sociological theories and frameworks, it will become clear that this topic is one that will keep growing and keep having a large impact on the lives of students, especially as technology keeps evolving and moving forward. Over the past decade leading edge advancements in technology have brought many new ways for students to learn. All the hours in a day that young kids, teenagers, and even adults spend using some sort of technology device, it opens a whole new dimension of learning methods. Although technology has brought up concerns of whether it is really benefiting students or taking focus away from their studies. “What we’re labeling as ‘distraction,’ some see as a failure of adults to see how these kids process information,” Ms. Purcell said. “They’re not saying distraction is good but that the label of ‘distraction’ is a judgment of this generation.” (Richtel) Cell phones, tablets, and computers allow for students of all ages to find meaningful and entertaining ways to learn through the mobilization technology brings to the table. We are living in a country that is called a technologically civilized society. The use of the Internet has not changed the way that we think but it is making unique contributions in classrooms by providing us with immediate and convenient access to an extraordinary amount of ideas and information. “In the world that we currently live in, technology is a very vital factor”. Today most people are more familiar with the gadget they carry in their backpack or even in their pocket; which is technically advanced. Every other day a new software device is being brought into the marketplace that helps to improve our knowledge in and out of school. in one way, the internet provides a much easier opportunity in education for student everywhere with access to all kinds of books available at any time. However, it is important to note that despite the fact that technology plays a big role in making our school lives much easier, it is not the only role it has. The internet seems to be impairing our ability to focus and to think deeply on any subject. The more technology continues to grow, the more improvement it provides in education level for certain students while for others it has a very different effect in the way we read and take in information. Furthermore, I will be discussing both pros and cons of the way technology is used in and out of our schools today.

This journal article, which comes from the professor of education out of Brigham University, Utah, examines technology as a tool for students but not as a form of reliance for teachers. This article also takes a look at the economic perspective of incorporating digital technology more frequently into the classroom. As well, this article takes a very sociological perspective and examines the way in which this upcoming digitalization of the classroom, which will provide a strong relationship to many of the course materials which will also will be included within this paper. This article also provides a new argument/ point of view that examines the technology as only a minor part of the classroom, as the teacher is still the main source of knowledge which differs from a few of the other articles. Due to these differences in perspective, it will provide an interesting contrast and argument that could help guide the paper in a few different ways. As well, this paper provides an American perspective, which could or could not be relevant, but the context could provide an explanation for some of the biases within the article. Overall, this article will be an interesting addition as it has many different and unique perspectives and opinions on digital sociology and education.
Technology can help students in all areas of study. Students need to be able to use this technology since, “Currently and in the near future, it is understood that students need to acquire more autonomous skills of ‘information gathering, analysis, and display’” (Todnem, 2004, p. 1). Furthermore, the use of technology, mainly the internet, provides for variation since “Students find themselves bored and burnt-out of the lecture format to classes, so changing the curriculum and instruction to include things like online assignments and educational videogames can be one clear remedy” (Todnem, 2004, p. 1). Teachers who have implemented technology into their classrooms have noticed changes in their students. The most common of these effects being an increase in motivation. In “Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students” another positive effect is given “technology effect stressed by many teachers was enhancement of student self esteem” (“Effects,” 2004, p. 2).
As we navigate through the 21st century, technology in the classroom is becoming further predominant. iPads are replacing our textbooks, and we can research any desired topic on our smartphones. The impact that technology has had on today’s schools has been utterly momentous. Educators have now seen firsthand the numerous benefits of technology in the classroom. According to a study by IT Trade Association CompTIA, around 75 percent of educators have come to the conclusion that technology has a positive impact on the education process. Educators have also recognized the significance of developing these technological skills in students so they will be prepared to enter the workforce after they graduate (Cox). There is much in the literature regarding the use of technology in education. According to Dede (2009), Banister (2010), Peled and Schocken (2014), my topic can be characterized as technology in education is an effective tool for motivating student engagement, increasing academic success, and providing new environments for students to learn. Thus, the more technology that is incorporated in a students’ earlier grades, the more inclined they will be to prefer that type of instruction in their latter years. It is an important topic with respect to education because the wave of new technology is increasing at rate never before seen in the field of education. These articles track the study of technology use in the field, and how they are beneficial for my study of technology in education. All of the articles support the idea of the use of technology in education, and each represent a different aspect in which technology can improve a child’s education.
Upon entering a classroom in the United States the room is typically full of desks and chairs in symmetrical rows, the teacher’s desk is stacked with resources, and a considerable amount of textbooks, papers, and posters are located around the room. Among these objects there may be one or two computers, in some instances smartboards, but overall the influence of technology in the classroom is limited. This scene is practically identical to every other classroom across the country. Although society has evolved to embrace technology, the American classroom has had little alteration to its scenery and little acceptance of technology in educating students. In contrast to the past, the classroom and the educational techniques used in the twenty-first century have evolved. Throughout the evolution of schooling, the introduction and the use of computers has altered the American classroom and education positively.
Technology is one of the most controversial and innovative subjects in recent history. It has been said that it’s what will cause us to survive in the near, but distant future. Technology has been entering the realm of education for years now. Some schools are becoming one on one schools-where every student has their own computer. The increasing population of ELL students have also come to use technological resources as a way to not only communicate, but to learn the English language. However, there are those who see technology as a distraction or it does not socialize the students. Because of the pervasiveness of technology throughout society, one question must be answered. Is the widespread existence of technology harming students? Are the multitudes of devices found in every aspect of our culture a tool that can help students in their pursuit of an education, or are they supplanting the need for students to use problem solving strategies? This discussion, which has been raging since the first computer appeared in a school building, becomes even more relevant with each passing day. The question in this paper is posed in the negative, “Is technology negatively affecting academic growth in students?” Therefore, the “Pros” will actually be speaking against technology, while the “Cons” will be speaking in favor of technology.
