Technology can be broadly defined as the use of scientific knowledge for practical purposes mostly in industry. Its application in various industries includes the information and media technology, agriculture, education, construction and transport. Technology allows us to perform complicated tasks in our daily lives and ensures efficiency in production. Technology has been advancing in astounding ways in recent years especially due to progress achieved in computing and it can only grow even more in the future. Although authors have different views on this broad topic, they are important as they help paint a picture for society on how technology will evolve.

What is technology? According to the dictionary, Technology is the application of scientific knowledge for practical purpose, especially in industry or the branch of knowledge that deals with creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society and the environment such as industrial arts, engineering, applied science and pure science. We can also say that technology is anything that is created by humans to make our life easy and solve problem or anything invented after you were born.

My early experience with technology was playing games on my parent’s cell phones and watching television as a child. Arthur gives three definitions of the word technology. First, “a technology is a means to fulfill a human purpose.” Second, technology is “an assemblage of practices and components.” Third, technology is “the entire collection of devices and engineering practices available to a culture” (28). His concept of technology is broad making it hard to delimit what is and what is not considered technology. It also makes it hard to draw the line between science and technology. He sees technology as a “means to a purpose” (29). I agree with his observation that technology serves as a tool that allows us to find solutions to problems and that technology it is not about making progress, it is simply about solving problems. Progress is the result of solving problems using technology.
