Moving forward, social media has been a major convenience and reward to virtually everyone. On an individual basis, social media allows friends and family both near and far to communicate with one another. Also, businesses are flourishing through the use of social media. Advertising has never been easier. Horn (2013) states, “Our profession, unlike any time before, is demanding we become social media (…) experts” (1). Horn (2013) also states, “More than half of reporters (55 percent) use Twitter and Facebook to source stories” (1). Social media has greatly benefited business life and personal life.

The communications and media landscape is experiencing a profound and fast transformation. There is a possibility of describing the evolution and development of new technologies as enterprising and open. The internet comprises of the considered technological developments, which is the latest outlet that a considerable number of people in the world can access and use to communicate (Maras 3). Just as other technologies before it, the internet has the power to transform the manner in which people realize the freedom to express themselves. Any person that can access the internet can create, share or edit their individual information or other people’s content. The flare-up of digital communication, especially through the social media allows citizens to participate in public debates on a level unparalleled historically.

Social media can also make or break an employee. If an employee writes a bad comment on social media about the company they work for, the employer can terminate an employee for poor conduct and bad mouthing the company, even if the employee is off the property and not at work posting these comments. When someone gets in trouble for saying something unprofessional they go directly to defending themselves with using freedom of expression as an excuse. Social media allows anyone to say whatever is on their mind but at the same time, some things that go through a persons mind shouldn’t always get out onto social media for everyone to see. Social media has allowed users to become as ugly and have a negative attitude that can just spill all out. Companies will continue to look more in depth through social media even after they have hired a new employee and if something an employee says is seen by the wrong eyes it can be in serious trouble. Although, we must also help them learn that in a world where anyone can hind behind a screen you can never be too careful with the information you put online.
