Some Believe that the use of social media allows us to practice freedom of speech and provide an outlet for free expression. Unfortunately in some instances social media, also gives us the opportunity to engage in behavior that normally we wouldn’t do in a face to face setting. Social media can also make or break an employee. If an employee writes a bad comment on social media about the company they work for, the employer can terminate an employee for poor conduct and bad mouthing the company, even if the employee is off the property and not at work posting these comments. When someone gets in trouble for saying something unprofessional they go directly to defending themselves with using freedom of expression as an excuse. Social media has allowed users to become as ugly and have a negative attitude that can just spill all out. Companies will continue to look more in depth through social media even after they have hired a new employee and if something an employee says is seen by the wrong eyes it can be in serious trouble. As the years go on, the internet is increasingly becoming more accessible to people all around the world. It is practically running our lives, manifesting itself in apps at home and in mobile devices wherever you may be. Regardless of age, billions of people are connected through social media, especially children and teenagers. In 2013, Mary Madden’s “Teens and Technology 2013” was published on the Pew Internet Project. According to the Pew Internet Project, more than three-quarters of American children are expected to have a cell phone by the fifth grade, more than half having smart phones. With an abundance of adolescents using social media, should parents be able to monitor teenagers’ social media accounts? In speculation, this topic has a very intriguing argument. Teenagers want privacy, trust, and freedom that the internet provides outside of their physical reality.
society by providing a medium perfect for connecting with people in a variety of ways.
With technology becoming so common and an everyday norm young adults and children are in a whole new community that adults did not grow with. Many times a real life community or environment does not feel supportive to a young adult and they seek out advice or they read about different ideas online that help them feel normal and at home with themselves. Although, because there are so many communities that young adults feel comfortable in they also face dangers from being in this secret unmonitored. Many Young adults feel safe posting about their personal life online because they believe that only their friends will see the information and others will not be willing to go through the trouble of finding them. It is because of this mindset that teens have that results in dangerous people harming them physically and or mentally. In a study conducted by the Harvard Mental Health Letter Internet users that were preteens or teens found that thirteen percent had received some type of sexual solicitation online in the past year, and four percent received aggressive solicitations where the solicitor attempted to make contact offline with them (Protecting, 2008). As adults and teachers we need to understand that social media is a big part of a student’s life because it was what many of them were born into. Although, we must also help them learn that in a world where anyone can hind behind a screen you can never be too careful with the information you put online.
Some of the top benefits of social media over the years are that it is free to anyone, the content can get out to resources virtually immediately, and it can be delivered to a wide variety of people. For these reasons, communication through social media has become an extremely accessible and convenient way to communicate. It is also popular for those who need to be in contact with others. One example that comes to mind is a teenager who goes away on a trip to visit a friend or family. They can be hundreds of miles away but still talk to their parents as if they weren’t. Another example is a person who is shy and has a hard time making friends face-to-face, social media sites are a great way to meet people and build relationships.
