Essay 3
I remember back when I was in high school it was common to hear the phrase “When will I ever use this in life” or “I’ll never use this again, so I don’t care”. For some classes this may be true. However, English is definitely not one of those classes. In the field of criminal justice, you have to use writing from the time you enter college until the day you retire from whatever job you have taken. Whether you like it or not, writing will always be something you have to do, and do well. I recently spoke with a student who is attending VCU with hopes of getting a degree, and an eventual job in Homeland Security. I asked this student what styles of writing they are required to complete in his class. He replied by saying that they have to write papers on various terrorist events, both past and present; they also have to write about the motivations of terrorism, different methods of terrorism, and new versus old terrorism. I asked for an example of something they had to write in this class, he told me one of the first topics they had to write about was “what makes terrorism terrorism”. These are just a few examples of a first year criminal justice student at VCU. If writing isn’t important now, when you work for some type of criminal justice organization it will be. Since criminal justice organizations are run by the government they expect very clear and professional writings almost every single day. According to Saginaw Valley State University
From those four skills, writing is one of the most important skill that the students have to mastered. Wilson (2003: 212) stated that learning how to write well is really important. Writing is one of the most important things that students do with their education. By writing, the author can convey a message or information to the reader, and what authors create and collect will not disappear just because it has been poured on the paper. The
Throught the years terrorism have drastically changed our point of view of the world. In the 20th century terrorist did not have that much of technology to work with including aviation. Now a days they have more methods and forms to attack countries and states. A brief definition of terrorism is a use of violence acts to scare people in an area as a way to achieve political goals. Terrorism is the cause of many wars throughout history continues to this day leading to nations; such as Iraq and the United States fighting to rid the world of this evil.
Every day consists of writing, whether it is informal or formal. Writing comes in different forms including, emails, essays, text messages, and even note taking in class. I have gathered materials and assignments in my major to analyze what kind of writing is required and how it should be executed. What I discovered was surprising, but almost every piece of research revealed that writing is not incredibly important in my field of study.
As history, has shown us, as time progresses things begin to change. We can take that same aspect and apply it to terrorism. Terrorism has shown that it can change as history progresses as well. Typically, terrorist groups are organized by a hierarchy. Now, terrorist organizations are cell-orientated(McEntire,2009). That means they resemble a network of many groups(McEntire,2009). In the past, terrorism was supported by states; however, terrorist have become more independent when it comes to gaining money to support what they stand for (McEntire,2009). Next, before it was easy to differentiate between crime and terrorism, now it is more difficult since terrorist relay on crime to raise money(McEntire,2009). McEntire, also states, that the
Criminal Justice is a set of companies that is settled by the governments to control crime and appoint penalties on those who defies the law, that is why people who want this career need proper writing skills in. In these formal organizations; memoranda, press releases, research reports, and communications with judicial and legislative bodies are all kinds of written media in the criminal justice area, so they can show evidence in their report and possibly catch the criminal. Leadership ability and program development are closely related to writing skills. It will boost anyone's confidence and awareness towards any challenge.
Since the 9/11 terrorist attacks many have sought to argue that a ‘New’ paradigm of terrorism exists and therefore that the nature of modern terrorist threats has changed. However, terrorism itself has never been clearly outlined, and as such both Copeland and Duyvesteyn argue current threats to be a continuation of older trends of traditional terrorism. More so terrorism is subjective and therefore current threats depends upon who the target is and who is reporting the attack. On the other hand, Hoffman focuses on deconstructing specifically the 9/11 attacks and in assessing potential future threats and as such is of greater use to governments seeking to deploy stringent countermeasures. The evolution of terrorist groups motivations and
Pantha rei as it was stated by the Greek philosopher, Heraclites of Ephesus (sixth and fifth centuries B.C.) everything flows, everything changes. Change in the contemporary world is an extremely fast process. Nothing remains the same as it was in the past. In political science especially, some notions (e.g. sovereignty) demand redefinition. The changing nature of all things also includes the political concept
Writing is very important; it is how your knowledge is judged at work, college and community. It is the primary way of communication, most people communicate thru email, text messages, social media. It is critical that you have strong writing skills and the proper education of how to write. For example when you are writing a letter to a business, it is important that you have strong writing skills,
If you were to ask a group of people if writing in college is important, almost everyone would agree that it is, but it’s the next question that stumps everyone and makes them have to think a little deeper. That question is, why? Why is writing in college so important? College writing is a needed necessity in college, and for your future career because most careers require writing or documenting to be done. Not only is it important for everyone’s career but it is especially important for my future in the psychology department.
Sadly, terrorist attacks have become more common in our modern, industrialized world than any other time in history. Over the past few years, there has been a concentration of these savage events in major Western European countries such as, but not limited to, Great Britain, France, and Belgium. Powerful terrorist organizations, like ISIS, have used these highly developed nations as backdrops to inflict havoc on innocent tourists and civilians. Once a symbol of peace and prosperity, Western Europe is currently enveloped in a state of turmoil where people everywhere are fearful for their safety, the military and law enforcement officers are on high alert every second of the day, and the notion of personal freedoms and civility seems to be a distant memory. While some industry insiders and travel enthusiasts claim that travel to Western European countries is stable or improving, the dangerous circumstances that have arisen because of the onslaught brought on by terrorism have instead hurt the perception of Western Europe in many ways, leading to the potential downturn of travel to this region of the world.
Have you ever had a fear for your family, your town, your country, or your world. How about the fear to have everything taken from you, destroyed, and not caring if it has hurt you or not? What about your fear and pain is, and can be someone else’s happiness? The fear of you being terrorized? That is terrorism. Someone else bringing fear and terrorizing you. That is a terrorist’s goal. Terrorism is common and is very difficult to stop. The government promises protection for the people, and their home, but they can not give that protection if they can not stop terrorism. Terrorism needs to stop to protect the live of the people, and their country.
Nobody could ever imagine how frightful of the terrorism until it really happened. The major event that happened on September 11th, 2001 was the unexpected attack from the terrorists towards Americans. Not only Americans, but also the whole world was deep into fear. It’s not just the number of people died in the attack; it totally changed people view toward terrorisms from that point. The question is how and what should we do to dissuade this kind of attack for happening again in the future whether near or farther? In order to get the solution for this problem, we should examine terrorism from three different perspectives with the international environment, the state, and the individual in The War on Terror written by Patrick Coaty.
Terrorism can have many different meanings or definitions to different individuals but in the end terrorism is the threat and use of physical and physiological force by individuals or groups who want to receive strategic and political gain. The FBI’s definition comes from the Code of Federal Regulations which states that, “The unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives." (Href, Mailto, Oliver, & Libaw, 2011) Terrorists want to put fear in the citizens and government that they are targeting. The more fear communities and the government have, the more successful terrorists will judge their attacks. (Newman & Clarke, 2007) The goals of terrorists is to inflict causalities, create fear, and to draw media attention. (Newman & Clarke, 2007) Terrorism acts are thought to be large, astonishing events but terrorism comes in many different forms. Some different forms consist of car bombing, assassinations, kidnapping, hijacking of an airline, train or ship, chemical or biological attacks, suicide bombings, and many more. (Newman & Clarke, 2007) With all of these unique ways that terrorist attacks can materialize first responders are presented with many risks. These risks consist of putting their own life in danger, not having full knowledge and information of the situation before being in the situation themselves, not having the
The United States has had its share of terror attacks, whether it was a major destruction, or simpler destruction. On September 11th of 2001 (9/11), there was a major crisis after learning about the terror attacks that happened on the World Trade Center in New York. That is one of the most memorable terror attacks that took place in the Unites States. It was a series of terror attacks that took place and the Pentagon was also targeted during this time. It was determined that Islamic nations were targeting the United States to gain insight to their political views. The Islamic terrorist were so pressed on getting their points across that they didn’t care about the lives that stood in their way, including their own. Thousands of people lost their lives in these two attacks alone and millions were affected. Since then, terrorism has been a clear problem that has continued to show itself over time throughout the United States. Terrorism is not limited to the United States, in fact, terrorism has been linked to different areas of the world like Pakistan, Israel, Japan, and in the Philippines. Terrorism can be anywhere from bombing, plane-crashing, or just plain assassinating, as long as their means were to get a message across. One example for an assassinating shooting is the Orlando shooting that took place on June 12, 2016. The shooter was classified as just a gunman to some, but he was classified as a terrorist to others because of the actions he chose to take. He
Module two highlighted the need for a greater understanding of how to recognize terrorism and what resources can be utilized to strengthen communities. A strong capability to perform hazard and threat assessments can go a long way in helping a community take preventive and protective measure in the fight against terrorism. Fighting terrorism is a combination of several tools and activities aimed at improving response capabilities and reducing the risks from attacks.
