Terrorism And New Versus Old Terrorism

I remember back when I was in high school it was common to hear the phrase “When will I ever use this in life” or “I’ll never use this again, so I don’t care”. For some classes this may be true. However, English is definitely not one of those classes. In the field of criminal justice, you have to use writing from the time you enter college until the day you retire from whatever job you have taken. Whether you like it or not, writing will always be something you have to do, and do well. I recently spoke with a student who is attending VCU with hopes of getting a degree, and an eventual job in Homeland Security. I asked this student what styles of writing they are required to complete in his class. He replied by saying that they have to write papers on various terrorist events, both past and present; they also have to write about the motivations of terrorism, different methods of terrorism, and new versus old terrorism. I asked for an example of something they had to write in this class, he told me one of the first topics they had to write about was “what makes terrorism terrorism”. These are just a few examples of a first year criminal justice student at VCU. If writing isn’t important now, when you work for some type of criminal justice organization it will be.
