Terry Mcmillan's Waiting To Exhale

In Larry Lankton’s text, “Beyond the Boundaries” we gradually enter an unknown world that is frightening yet filled with immense beauty for miles. Due to the copper mining industry, a gradual increase of working class men and their families start to migrate to the unknown world with unsteady emotion, yet hope for a prosperous new life. In “Beyond the Boundaries”, Lankton takes us on a journey on how the “world below” transformed the upper peninsula into a functional and accepted new part of the world.

What really defines a dreamer? Is it the children who have unrealistic dreams of playing in the big leagues or is it someone who has a plan and will go out of his or her way to achieve it? Both of these options can be true. Dreamers are special in this world because they have hope for something they believe in. Nothing is more fascinating than seeing an individual who never gave up and worked extremely hard to reach their goal. Having read only three sections so far, I have explored the individual’s purpose and passion for the work they pursue. The “Dreamers” section has made me analyze what I have and want with my future career. Overall, the elements of the book defining dreamers explains the meaning of a risk taker, the hard work and dedication involved, and the passion it takes to reach your goals.

Laughter and tears follow the journey of those who faced immense hardships and prevailed. One such individual is Francis McCourt, who wrote Angela’s Ashes, and gave readers a recollection of stories and lessons learned through his difficult childhood. The story starts in New York City, where his parents, Malachy and Angela, married and started a family with five children: Francis, Malachy, twins Oliver and Eugene, and Margaret. Seven weeks after Margaret is born, she passes away, sending Angela into a crazed hysteria causing her and family to move back to Ireland and resettle in her hometown, Limerick, a town known for hating those that seem different. Tragedy strikes again with Eugene and Oliver passing away, causing Malachy to fall back into his alcoholic and neglectful habits, leaving Angela and Francis to financially support the family even with hostile discrimination. Along with that, two more children are born, Michael and Alphonsus. However, over time Francis manages to save enough money to stabilize his family and to go back to New York City. Francis’s success story is a result of overcoming trials and tribulations, showcasing how society was hypocritical and discriminatory of any person that was not Irish, white, Limerick Catholic during the 1930’s and 1940’s

To be an ethnic American is a culture all on its own. Hunger of memory by Richard Rodríguez gives an insight into the rarely viewed world. A person that no longer falls into either category of family or American community. Such an individual is stuck between two worlds, in which two different cultures collide yet form a rift through family, language and education.

Science fiction is a way for an author to express their concerns in the world while using fiction to bring up controversial ideas. In Unwind , Neal Shusterman is able to incorporate science fiction in a way to not only get his points across but to also make the reader think, and adjust the message to relate to one's own life. Unwind takes place in the future where it is an option for parents to choose to have their child unwound, meaning they would be taken from their family and taken apart. Their body parts would then be given to someone who is sick or injured. The reader is introduced to the main characters: three teenagers who have relatable backgrounds to teenage readers in order to help one connect and feel a part of the story. As readers start learning about these characters, Lev, Connor and Risa, new issues develop which create life or death situations that these adolescence have to deal with alone. While this story is science fictional the plot of these kids struggling to find who they are and what their purpose is, while their parents have given up on them, is something most readers can relate to in one way or another, whether it’s being unsure about the future, having family problems, or being told something can’t be done. Phillis Wheatley drew attention in the 18thcentury for being a black slave, and a child prodigy who was able to write poems and songs. She was born in Gambia, Africa, and brought to Boston as a slave when she was a child, and became slave and companion to John Wheatley’s wife. As she grew older, John Wheatley’s wife viewed her as a feeble and brilliant girl who deserves to be educated and felt great affection toward her. Therefore, Susanna Wheatley’s daughters taught Phillis how to read and write, so she delivered her honest opinions through her writings (Baym and Levine 763). Then she became the first African American writer to publish a book of poetry while other slaves were forbidden to learn how to read and write. Her ability to write and read gave her freedom of expression and enabled her to become a free woman. Her literacy influenced her surroundings in numerous ways. She was acknowledged by many people for her great poetical talents (“Phillis Wheatley, the First” para 3). In the poem “On Being Brought from Africa to America,” Phillis Wheatley appeals to ethos and pathos, uses suitable diction and a metaphor to demonstrate that the discrimination of Africans is barbarous, and encourages people to not judge by physical characteristics, but consider innate qualities.

At first, Winston felt no true attraction to Julia, but in their second time making love, Winston felt the physical loyalty that is involved in relationships. Winston was in love with Julia and they had created a bond of loyalty together which is very dangerous to do so

Before Winston met Julia, his body was wasting away and he believe he didn’t have anything worth living for. He started a journal and wrote “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER” all over a page, even though he knew he would be killed for committing thoughtcrime (19). However, when he sees “the words I love you [on Julia’s note,] the desire to stay alive had welled up in him, and the taking of minor risks suddenly seemed stupid” (91). Not only has Winston’s appetite for life returned because of Julia’s affection, but he becomes physically healthier as well. He “had grown fatter, his varicose ulcer had subsided… [and] his fits of coughing… had stopped” (124). Julia’s love strengthens Winston. After detailed planning to assure the Party could not eavesdrop on their date, Julia and Winston spend a whole afternoon in the countryside together and make love (98-106). This adventure is even more special to them because it is an act of rebellion against the Party, though they realize the fact they are able to be together is all that is important. In Richard Rodriguez autobiography, Hunger of Memory, Richard himself writes about his educational journey. Rodriguez wrote such book in 1982. The book revolves around the life a young immigrant child, whom has a difficult time understanding how to adapt himself in the given environment. Furthermore, the book navigates the readers though Richards transition form boyhood to adulthood. Not only so, but Richard discusses how the opportunities that were presented to him altered his viewpoints in life as well as education.

A breath of fresh air is the first book written by Amulya Malladi. In 1984, when she was nine years old, her father was posted in the city of Bhopal. On the third of December, 1983 the city suffered The Bhopal Gas Tragedy that killed many people. When this gas tragedy occurred, she along with her family was staying at the Army Center which was a few kilometers away from the plant. Due to the wind that blew in a direction opposite to theirs, they remained unaffected by the gas leak. In the last half of the year 1984, she faced the Assassination of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi that led the country’s division in the name of religion and made her come to terms with the finality of death.

Professor Paul Bloom states he is against empathy. He believes it is wrongfully used in our society and should not be used in certain situations. He still thinks it is important sometimes, but should not be primarily used as a result of anger, depression or retaliation. He believes compassion is the solution to empathy. In the long run, Bloom states that empathy will fail or burnout in a person. Hannah the extremely empathic person will eventually burnout according to Bloom. The use of empathy everyday as a core moral code will eventually be overwhelming and burned out and used up. The person will change direction and use empathy less in their lifetime. In Name of the Wind, Patrick Rothfuss gives life to The Four Corners of Civilization through his storytelling. Storytelling gives the author an opportunity to show their experiences and reflect their beliefs within the world they are creating. During the time this book was being written, there was the Iraq and Afghanistan War taking place which had been sending many soldiers back home with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Rothfuss parallels this disorder within his book through the main character, Kvothe, when he experiences trauma and he shows how Kvothe copes with the persisting trauma through grief theory, “four doors of the mind” (135) . His four doors of the mind is similar to the Kubler-Ross Model, which is widely accepted by practitioners, but challenges it by believing the mind copes with pain through the central idea of numbing. However, this mindset of categorizing emotions experienced within grief can be destructive behavior towards any griever rather than helping them cope; stages of post-loss grief do not exist.

In today’s society, sociopaths frequently play a big role in the business/political world. Sociopaths are people with personality disorders, who are usually charming, and have poor judgment (M. E. Thomas). Sociopaths usually are not able to tell right from wrong (LoveToKnow Corp). The film Window Of Opportunity, written and directed by Samuel Joseph, had a great example of what a sociopath would be like. The character Roger Sizemore in this film is a sociopath who believes he is the greatest due to the amount of money he has. This paper will describe the film and why the character Roger has sociopathic behaviors, and compare him to Bernie Madoff and Fred Goodwin.

Winston is a twenty year old Jamaican man. He comes a wealthy family, his dad is a doctor and his mother is a nurse. Winston is a student at an university in Jamaica and has a job for the summer as a assistant chief. He meets a woman twice his age, named stella, while having breakfast one morning. Through, his persistence he captures her heart and a relationship formed. Despite the things he had to overcome such as their age difference, and his parents’ disapproval, he was determined to make the relationship work and it did. He decided he wanted to make her his wife, so he asked her to marry him.
