Tetanus Research Paper

Decent Essays

Tetanus, a dangerous bacterial disease that is also known as lockjaw, is a disease that attacks your central nervous system (Mayo Clinic). This disease is a severe and sometimes even fatal disease that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which is a spore-forming, gram-positive bacillus that is found in higher concentrations in animal manure and soil (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Tetanus can cause a person to have painful muscle contractions, mostly in your neck muscles and/or your jaw. One thing that tetanus can restrict is your breathing ability; on the other hand, it sometimes can even threaten your life (Mayo Clinic). It transfers to your body through an open wound. Tetanus is often found in soil and animal manure. …show more content…

The bacterium that causes this disease is the bacterium Clostridium tetani, which is a spore-forming, gram-positive bacillus that is found in higher concentrations in animal manure and soil (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The most common things that this disease is transmitted through are rusty and dirty nails, knives, tools, animal bites, and wooden splinters (Mayo Clinic). When the bacteria enters an open wound, tiny spores of the bacteria can create a powerful toxin that is called tetanospasmin, which damages your motor neurons; nerves that control your muscles. The result of this toxin existing in your motor neurons can cause muscle stiffness and spasms, which both happen to be two major signs of having the tetanus disease (Mayo Clinic). Women have a higher risk at getting the infection when they are giving birth or having an abortion if the tool that is being used happens to be contaminated. When a baby is born, it is at a higher risk if the tool is dirty that is being used to cut the umbilical cord (World Health …show more content…

Although there is no cure, there are treatments and shots that are available to prevent getting this disease. Your doctor may give you antitoxin, which is a tetanus immune globulin (Mayo Clinic). You may also receive antibiotics from your doctor, either given to you by injection or by mouth. Doctors use these powerful narcotics to prevent and control the muscle spasms that occur, or may occur, when tetanus is present in one’s body. When you go see your doctor about tetanus, it is important to let you doctor know when, where, and how you received the injury or wound, how you’ve been caring for the wound, and chronic illnesses you may have, and when you received your last tetanus vaccine shot. The tetanus vaccine is a series of five shots, which are usually given in the thigh or arm to children at the ages of two months, four months, six months, 15-18 months, and four to six years. After those series of five shots, it is best to have a tetanus shot every five years to protect yourself from getting the infection (Starlin, Tetanus). Personally, my mom likes to get me one every two to three years just to play it safe so we know that I won’t get tetanus. Once the tetanus has bonded onto your nerves, it is impossible to remove from your body. To recover from tetanus, it is required that you grow new nerve endings, which can take up to several months to recover. Risk factors of tetanus, if it is not treated, include broken bones, disability, and death
