DISCUSSION
This study in Shree Swaminarayan Physiotherapy College has revealed that the students who had actively participated in this research, a total of 246 students. 4 were in extremely severe depression score, 18 were in extremely severe anxiety score and only 1 in extremely severe stress category. High amount of depression, anxiety and stress can be because of multiple reasons. It could be their personal reasons, environmental reasons and academic reasons. Different contributing factors to lead to abnormal depression, anxiety and stress among the students can be due to various factors like, physical factors, academic factors, social factors, emotional factors, personality factors, etc. Medical and Paramedical students are expected to
Colleges with a medical department often have a master’s program for physical therapy. (“Physical Therapists”) Physical therapy students have a required amount of field work in order to complete a program. Each candidate must work in an accredited workplace for the field work assignments. This part of the program is extremely valuable and helpful for a new therapist entering the field. Working one on one can be difficult even with all of the educational tools. (Curtis 37)
One of the biggest problems among students within post-secondary are the struggling issues of mental health such as depression, anxiety or stress which leads to the failure of adequate nutrition. The age of when mental disorders are clear to one’s self is between the age of 18 to 24 as this is the age of many adolescents are going into higher education (Kessler et al., 2005) . University students who struggle with depression and anxiety majority of the time is caused by the academic stress of being a leading cause of their mental health. As a survey was conducted by campus counselors, many found an outstanding factor of parental pressure for high grades from their child causing many students stress, depression and anxiety which elevates expectations within the student (Watkins et al. 2001, p. 322). These high rates are due to the feeling of being badgered to achieve high grades and maintain their grades while balancing their social life.
(February 2014) Similar to this study I used a stress scale although, I reduced mine to a scale between: 1-5. “5” being the highest level of stress. The Stress in America study used a Perceived Stress Scale that participants self-monitored their stress levels by answering where they would answer such questions as “how often have you felt irritable and angry in the last month” and they could answer,(very often, sometimes, never etc.) For my purposes I asked myself the following three questions and used the following rating system to determine my stress levels that day.(Angus, n.d.)
-We are first going to develop an exposure hierarchy where you will rate scenarios by their level of distress you experience when faced with them. This scale will be from 1 to 10, where one is no anxiety and 10 is the most anxiety you have ever
Accordingly, altruism became a mainstay. Proctoring physical therapists indoctrinated the fundamental that you put every need of a patient before your own, and always shooting for a higher level of care than the majority would accept. Specifically, they would always let patients come in on occasions separate from their appointments and utilize the exercise equipment as required. As the intern, building a priority to support all patients that came in with total guidance and instruction became predominant. This leads to the other key to professionalism, humility. During my internship, constant quizzing ingrained that you constrain the need to answer every question. Giving a “best guess” will lead to negative repercussions. Correspondingly, observations of the physical therapists themselves refer innumerable times to other professionals; be it the patient’s doctor, another therapist, or a dietitian. Seeing how various physical therapists operated also reinforced the belief of professional duty. The pride every therapist had in the profession, the mentoring that each provided, and the amount of work put towards every patient left my mind with a profound impression. Equally important, the consciousness of unspoiled care and compassion. Listening to other undergraduates and professors explain that you would have “problem patients”; this idea became entrenched in my head when starting. Contrarily, their concepts never materialized. Wanting to help the patients that had numerous struggles, or purely had countless debilitating injuries constituted as the goal. Contemplating unique exercises, finer cues, or improved ways to motivate perpetuated my evenings. Moreover; considering a patient ingenuously as a “knee”, or “rotator cuff”, or even just a patient was never a possibility. They were always people and people with their own particular
The stress and depression rates among medical school students were personal troubles, but also public issues. At the end of Dr. Slavin’s research, Slavin created a solution that helped reduce the depression and suicide rates. He found a way for the medical students to find meaning in their work, reduced unnecessary stressors, and provided the students with better access to psychiatrists. The new environment in medical school created a better experience and helped the success rate of medical school students. Dr. Slavin’s study could help other levels of learning, not just medical school. If his model is implanted in middle school and high school, the teenage stress, depression, and suicide rates could
My recent experience as a full-time technician in a physical therapy clinic has done two things: It has acclimated me to busy adult life (cementing the fact that being in love with my profession is an immovable requirement), and it has strengthened my desire to pursue a career in physical therapy. Throughout my employment, I have recognized that the professional demands of being a PT envelop so much more than just knowledge. The ingredients for an auspicious therapist include proficient communication and quality bedside manner, willingness to work with diverse populations, strong analytical/observational skills, and a detail-oriented prospective. My proximity to competent therapists has fueled my desire to emulate the quality service they provide
As we know, there more and more college students have stressed issue nowadays. However, most of them just want to find some way to release the stress, but they forget the reason why make them feel stress. The author used the evidence “Anxiety-ridden students list schoolwork as their chief stressor. U.C.F.’s center and after-hours hotline are busiest when midterm and final exams loom. That’s when the center runs what has become its most popular event: “Paws-a-tively Stress Free.”” to show why this activity happen. Also, Hoffman give many supporting evidence that how the health center helps the student to overcome it and help them to release the stress. Hoffman also gave some way that health center help students to feel better such likes give
It is the belief of the intern physical therapy should not be seen as a chore. Patients are responsible for their own lives. Provide the highest quality of patient care.
Negative stress is believed to cause Somatic symptom disorder (SSD) in students under academic stress. Somatic symptom disorder occurs when a person feels extreme anxiety as well as pain or fatigue due to negative stress. People with this disorder have intense thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that interfere with the person’s daily life. According to this article, many students may experience this throughout the complicated stages of their scholastic career/college. This disorder can occur to both genders but mostly in women. It is very important to release negative stress from one’s life because the causes of negative stress can lead to heart attacks and death. The behaviors of this disorder vary, for some people it cause migraines, back
Physiotherapy is my initial career choice. In various ways it also resembles my other options. Athletes commit themselves to the depths of the most intense training and practice to excel in the fields of their profession. Lawmakers enact laws to help improve processes for the judicial system. Professors and educators teach and guide students to their desired paths to success. I want to integrate all these attributes as a physiotherapist to educate my patients to lead a healthier life, practice and train to reach dexterity as a physiotherapist and work to enhance the methods of medical practice.
After graduation I aim to work in the health industry as there are different options of occupations. The health industry is associated with insurers, providers and the community. Providers to the public have occupations such as clinical psychologists, nurses, doctors, dietitian, physiologist and other professions. This essay will go through the industry, professional skills that are required and personal skills.
One of the reasons why practitioners, students and academics hold clinical placements in such high regard is that it provides students with a base to link their theoretical knowledge with the practical aspects of practicing physiotherapy. Students get to apply what they had previously learned in the classroom setting and hone their skills in perfecting physiotherapy techniques. Not only does the clinical setting allow them to grasp the knowledge of the physiotherapy discipline, it also throws them into the pressures of real-life situations where students would need to combine their cognitive, motor and problem-solving skills in order to solve complex situations. Additionally, the clinical placement programs often help students to spend quality time with established professionals in the field of physiotherapy, obtain
The internship that I acquired during the summer of 2010 at the Greenwood Sports and Industrial Rehabilitation Center (GSIRC), allowed me to gain an immeasurable amount of experience during my tenure at this facility. Within this period, the exposure to new concepts within the physical therapy industry allowed me to observe and work hands on with patients of all ages and disabilities that exposed me to various treatment plans and programs to restore client’s mobility. The essential Physical Education and Exercise Science (PEES) courses taken at Lander University were beneficial to my academic knowledgebase, which prepared me and developed me for the opportunity within the physical therapy discipline. Working as
Based on these findings from research done previously I feel that this study is important. Firstly, we need to understand what causes the stressors and how it affects the individual. For example, if you have an entire university with stressed students, not being productive, not performing well academically perhaps thinking of dropping out of university because of the overwhelming anxiety; it can be detrimental to the institution in terms of status and students in terms of individual realisation. Secondly, we soon have to formulate effective and efficient stress management guidelines as we
