The United States is one of the largest countries that are made up of individuals from diverse origins and cultures. In addition, most foreigners from the other parts of the world migrated to the U.S, or become American citizens under different circumstances, especially during the 18th, 19th and the 20th centuries. Black Americans for example, arose in the American culture as a result of the numerous Africans who were being sold to the whites in order for them to work in the cotton and pyrethrum plantations. Mexican Americans arose as a result of the Mexican American war which occurred during the 1830s and 1840s, where Mexico conceded defeat and surrendered part of its territory to the United States. After the end of this war, the Mexicans who were residing in the surrendered Mexican land territory were transferred to the U.S, and most of them were located in California and the present day New Mexico (Kos 2011). Just like the African Americans and the other cultures that were being considered inferior by the white Americans, the Mexican Americans started experiencing oppression in various ways including social and economic oppression, soon after their migration to the U.S. and which continues to this day, this “country of freedom” needs to be legitimately free not just white native-born Americans, but everyone that calls the United States home and the Mexican immigrants that settle in the southwest deserve the freedoms this country provides, and not be economically oppressed
“Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed Let it be that great strong land of love ” American is where most people come to pursue dreams they have. In most countries freedom isn’t expressed amongst citizen. This is why America can be known as the land of opportunity. An American is someone who would take a beating to show loyalty to his country, who comes in steerage for opportunity , and who has confidence in this country although it treats them poorly.
The United States of America has millions of illegal and legal immigrants more than people that born in the country. Our country has received many immigrants since 1600s with the pilgrims and continued in the time of industrialization. Many of those immigrants were searching religious freedom and better opportunities. But they faced racial discrimination, low pay rate, and didn’t have opportunities to find better jobs. Now in our times, people still immigrate illegal and legal in our country. They are people just like us and they need to be treated right and fair. The United States should help illegal immigrants to have the same and equal rights that citizens and shouldn’t be punished for where country they come from.
According to the Scholastic News Online, when individuals were given the question of what it means to be an American, most of them described it as “being free” and having certain rights while others gave explicit examples and mentioned the fact that we as Americans receive opportunities such as “voting”. I somewhat agree with most of these individuals. I believe that being an American consists of having certain rights and a given amount of freedom, to a certain extent. I also strongly believe that by being American, we are guaranteed opportunity if we work hard for something. Being an American also means we have the power to make a difference and express what we feel in order to make this country better than before. Coming from a family that had a much more distinct experience than
Since before the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, race relations between the United States and Mexico have been less than great. The United States has a history of prejudice and racism. On a national level this sentiment has formed some legislation, and on a lower level it has formed the way many people conduct their lives. Mexican have been exploited for their work for decades. One man fought long and hard for his people and their civil liberties. That man was Cesar Chavez.
What does an American mean to you? I think this is a good question what does being an American mean, I think it has something to do with your right and freedom. The reason for this is because we have things that other people in different countries have. I think sometimes we even take advantage of the thing that we have. America is one of the more fortunate countries.
Mexican American struggles in the United States date back to the Spanish discovery of the New World in 1492. For over five hundred years, Mexicans have endured social injustices and inequalities at the hands of their superiors. The mistreatment of the native people of this land is constantly overlooked for "…the
While we are currently experiencing tumultuous politics and increasing hate and oppression towards various religious or ethnic groups, I think it is of particular importance to think about immigration in the United States, a country founded by immigrants, where no one besides the original people who have long been oppressed actually have a right to the land. David Chang describes the oppression and colonization of the land and its people in his Enclosures of Land and Sovereignty (Chang). He explains that the Europeans stripped the control from the native people by re-distributing the power of the land to the government and then suggested that people believed race, not politics, is what differed the native people from the settlers (Chang). However, the difference in identity of the native people is simply an excuse as to why they were colonized. Like the slaves in the African slave trade, the motives of the conquerors were political and the differences in identity were an excuse to label a group people as inferior
What is an American? This question cannot be answered by one word. There are so many different characteristics, qualities, and features that can be used to describe an American. Besides features, someone is only a real American if they take advantage of all of the many privileges that are given to them. Any person that is not grateful for the privileges that are given to them to me are not real Americans but this is only my opinion. Real Americans use their privileges to benefit themselves and everyone around them. In today's society there are certain things that are expected from American citizens, for instance being a responsible citizen.
What it means to be an American, to me it means to fight for this great country that our God created, the same god who made everyone of us. I also feel it's my duty if our country goes into a major war, then I feel I should go and fight for what's right. Therefore I also feel that everyone was made equal and we are the same we are people and Americans so why can't we all matter. To me no one is more popular or bigger than anyone we are all Americans and people, the people who think they are bigger and more popular than anyone else they like to think they are, but they really aren't. Like Hillary clinton she likes to think she is all good and she is all innocent of what the things we Americans said she did,
What It Means To Be An American My true definition of what it means to be an American is, celebrating the holidays with your family. Our country of the United States is and will always be Interwoven from the Fourth Of July to celebrate the Independence that we are given from the soldiers that fought in a war for us, our freedom of Independence that we are not disparate from each other, and spending time with you family or friends celebrating this special day by firing off fireworks or going to your local parade. Also my favourite of the holidays being Christmas with the long break that us kids in school get, or spending time with family and eating celebratory dinners with the people you love the most. All though other people have many different ideas of what it means to be an American, this is what I believe is the definition of being an American.
t is impossible to talk about the history of the United States without mentioning the contribution that the Mexican folks have done to build this great country. Mexicans that have given their lives by fighting and defending this country is different wars throughout its history. Mexicans immigrants also perform jobs that the Anglos won’t do. Jobs such like in the farm work, cleaning services, construction industry, among many other types of jobs. Moreover, Mexicans immigrants also contribute with more than 25% of the United States economy. Making them selve an important part for the economy of this country. Throughout history many Mexicans migrate to this country with the hope of finding a better better future with better opportunities. However, when they finally make it to this country the “American Dream” becomes a nightmare, because they suffer discrimination, poverty, and injustice.
Being an American is having freedom and respecting our country. American isn't always awesome place. People make bad decisions and do stupid things, but American is beautiful place. First thing to do to respect are country is to say” The Pledge of Allegiance” in school. Second things is if you are at a game standing up and put your hand on our heart for The Star Stander Bender and third appreciate our troops that fight are country or who fought and lost there lives for us. It’s not that hard, but rude people don’t like to support American.
As an American citizen it is our responsibility to understand and acknowledge the freedom we have been given for it was not just given to us, it took long hard work. Think about it how your everyday life is. Children and teens are going to a school that is free and air conditioned with provided lunch during the day, without cost. While also having the provided transportation, which for the school kids is a bus.Now think about the kids in Mexico, they wish they can go to school to get an education that was free and air conditioned with lunch provided for them, they don't even have buildings nor transportation. They have to walk many miles just to get to their destination. Kids in the school now take education
The author's response to the Atwan collection as well as the journal articles reviewed by the author of this paper is pretty simple. It can be concisely stated as the following. Open immigration is never going to be a viable solution, amnesty (for the third time in three generations) is not a good idea without some major follow-up, and the economic consequences of allowing 12 million (estimated) immigrants becoming legal overnight is not the panacea and feel-good fest that some people may think it will be. If amnesty recipients agree to do so and complete the requirements, they can and should be allowed to stay and be fruitful members of society. However, if the enforcement mechanism is not dialed up at the same time, then this country will be doing this yet again 20-30 years down the road"¦for at least the fourth time in a century. An American is someone who legally immigrates to this country and meets all the necessary requirements or is born to at least one American parent.
The United States has always been a progressive nation from its start in the 1700s and eventual revolution against the British. After a rocky start as an independent nation, the U.S. began to expand create its own laws and ideas of democracy as well as trade throughout the world. Much of this intercultural trading and exploration of Manifest Destiny allowed the U.S. to grow economically, culturally, physically, and politically. Emerging as one of the more powerful nations, the U.S. became a bright new prospect for a better life, and many immigrants came into the United States. New York for example, was populated by the Dutch. Indentured servants also came to work as they envisioned a new life. Eventually when they were released, they built
