Libraries customarily serve as providers of vast arrays of knowledge, provoking introspection and musing enabling the creation of original notions serving as a haven for independent thought, but also as an area to exchange knowledge. In the case of the J. Murrey Atkins Library—explicitly the ground floor—the underlying message provided by the facilitators is considerably complex. The Atkins Library, is committed to being academically resourceful and reliable, striving to preserve a tranquil and safe environment for students; ensuring comfort, socialization, and multitasking in a diverse setting. This message is insinuated in posters and signs exhibited throughout the ground floor, the technologically advanced appliances, the wide variety of seating arrangements, and the alarm systems, scattered across the ceiling.
The Atkins Library gives the impression of being intellectually rewarding, as perceived on the ground floor; however, whether students take advantage of this situation depends solely on the individual. There are various ways in which this message is conveyed, namely in the form of posters. There are two posters one of which can be found at the immediate north entrance of the library and the other in the general vicinity of Peete’s Coffee; informing students of “Upcoming Workshops.” Librarians regularly hold these workshops to aid scholars in researching topics, whether it be for a social science course or social work. These seminars are not required, but are
For libraries to remain a place for a lively exchange of ideas, librarians should be armed with the right knowledge and strong conviction to preserve people’s rights.
The students within the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library infrequently devote their focus to homework, swept up in the excitement of social interactions. The library at Phillips Academy serves as the prime destination for gatherings before, during, and after classes. As we leave dinner, day students, including myself, migrate across the path to the library. A set of three doors confronts us, a triad of thresholds that question our intentions of entering. I have to make the difficult decision between socializing and finishing my homework, but the former always entices me. I trot down the stairs to the basement, which has transformed over the summer from a racetrack for chair-racing competitions to a study center filled with individual booths.
On October 28th, 2015, Lone Star College of Kingwood hosted an event called the human library. It was held on campus for students who were interested to participate. The human library was created for students to gain knowledge of obstacles individuals experienced in life, such as living in the south as a black woman in the 1950’s, being homeless, and being a religion that is frowned upon in society. The purpose of the event is to teach students about other cultures, social classes, and hardship. The speakers inform our generation their own personal experience rather than information in a text book.
Founded in 1899, Northern Arizona University’s (NAU) first library opened with a dictionary and encyclopedia in its collection. Located in the central part of the NAU Flagstaff campus, it provides both physical and virtual environments that foster intellectual discovery, collaborative research, and access to technology (Library overview, 2016). As with most academic libraries, the research collections are critical to supporting the curricular and research mission of the university. As of April 2016, members of the NAU community and public have access to more than 670,000 print and e-books, 81,000 e-journals, 161,000 online audio and video recordings (J. Swann, personal communication, April 19, 2016). Successful learning requires inclusive and widespread support along with relevant resources from the library. Thus, the library offers spaces including group and individual study rooms; multi-media production studios, classrooms, and a makerspace. The library’s mission statement confirms the organization is committed to:
The library I volunteered at is run by the high school, Dr. Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute (C.I.). The school was founded in 1979 and was named after Norman Bethune; a well-known Canadian doctor. He was best known for his services during World War I and his dedication to helping the poor in Canada. Moreover, over these past few years, the school has prospered beautifully and has had many renovations and changes. For example, two years ago, the school’s library had a huge makeover. The library was given new furniture to allow to have students a better working space. Similarly, the library moved shelves around in order to make it more convenient for everyone to access books. Ultimately, Dr. Norman Bethune C.I. has it in their best interest to provide students with the tools they need to succeed in education. In other words, the school displays good citizenship by assisting their students.
States are not limited to adopting the latests definitions of intellectual disability that have been published by certain organizations. Atkins v. Virginia, granted States the freedom to define intellectual disability within certain limits based on their own laws. The courts have given legislators the tasks to determine the definition of medical terms that have a significance to legal situations. In the precedent decided in Atkins v. Virginia, it was acknowledged that it's still difficult to determine if and which offenders of the law have intellectual disabilities because the case only extended its rule to a certain extent of offenders. Also, the court noticed the definitions of intellectual disabilities varied from the state to actual clinical
I have experience teaching first-year undergrads up through doctoral students in settings including traditional library instruction, online ELMS courses, and a for-credit course. As the director of the UMD Libraries Research and Teaching Fellowship, I have first-hand experience supporting MLS students as they learn to teach, provide reference support, and explore their scholarly interests. Working with future librarians has been the most worthwhile and gratifying aspect of my position. I would welcome the opportunity to extend this experience into a formal learning environment in
There are an enormous amount of people in the United States that depend on the librarian to do different tasks that they cannot do. Patrons may think it is simple, but before you can become a librarian you have to learn how to conquer some patrons that come in, you have to learn how to work the desk and learn how to work the shelves.
When I arrived at the library, on a typically average monday evening, I was not particularly sure on the work I was getting myself into. But, when I found out I was cleaning the computer lab for an hour and hunting for missing books, my worry fled. I had plenty of experience cleaning, and knew that book hunting would be simple, it was a weekly task on my visits there to check out my own books. When I arrived at the
The University develop a ‘summer bridge program’ for at-risk students and partnered with the Library to provide a meaningful orientation to the participants. As the Science Librarian, I worked with students and faculty in the summer bridge program to orientate them to the library and the
At this point, most women around the globe know about the Atkins Diet. It has been a standout amongst the most exceptionally touted and dubious eating methodologies of our time. The individuals who adore the Atkins Diet have only extraordinary things to say in regards to it. However, the individuals who are opposing are not modest about their disapproval either. The biggest feedback with regards to the Atkins Diet, or low-carb dieting routines would be the nonappearance of whole grains, which are viewed as the foundation to a balanced diet.
As Andrew Carnegie once said “There is no such cradle of democracy upon the earth as the free public library.” Libraries serve as a center of a community which is available to everyone regardless of age. Public libraries are available for everyone to use from students, youth groups, businesses, and senior citizens, which serves as a meeting place. The library’s effectiveness comes from being able to support the needs of everyone that uses the services, and to make it a better place for the community. Libraries play a critical role in the lives of individuals from young kids to senior citizens, according to ALA (American Library
That same awful night that I listened to Professor Colbert’s chilling news, he distributed new student packages. The package was due at our next session. At the end of class, God gave me a remarkable idea. I decided that I would visit our local library on Saturday morning.
Myself and my colleague Jane Leung will be taking over the learning commons (LC) as new teacher-librarians starting September, 2017. The LC at Hugh Boyd Secondary is located on the first floor in the middle of the school and is open from 8am to 3:30pm on school days. Over the past three years, many changes have taken place to transform the space from a traditional library to a learning commons. The space has been freshly painted with inviting and uplifting colours and the has been opened up to accommodate multiple activities. Aside from hosting classes, the library is used to host staff meetings, and has a library monitor’s
In many countries, mostly people use more preserving food such as fruits, vegetable, meat, and fish because canned food or preserving food are cheaper than the fresh food, but the important thing is all these foods contain a plastic coating inside the can to keep them fresh and can store longer but it is very harmful for your health and have less nutrition.
