The Basic Message Of Islam

Islam is a monotheistic religious teaching about God and his messenger Muhammad. Islam teaches people about God’s messenger Muhammad and his followers. The Islamic teachings started in Saudi Arabia and expanded to different places around the world. There are 5 different pillars to Islam and they explain the different teachings. The pillars are, Shahadah, Salat, Sawm, Zakat and Hajj. The meaning of Islam is “Peace through submission to god”. Islam rapidly spread because of trade, peoples’ beliefs and conquest.

The five Pillars of Islam are the belief in Allah and Muhammad his Prophet, prayer five times a day, observing the holy month Ramadan, pilgrimage to Mecca and alms to poor and unfortunate. Muslim scholars created the Shari’a which was a law code, influenced by Hadith. It was a collection of prophet’s sayings. Muslims were forbidden to gamble, eat pork, drink alcohol, or be involved in dishonest behavior. Marriages were arranged by parents. Abu Bakr, Muhammad’s father in law, was the successor and he was also a religious leader. Jihad was a holy war for striving in the way of the lord. The Arabs defeated the Byzantine army and later took over Byzantine region of Syria. They also defeated the Persian forces and conquered the Sassanid Empire. They unified the Bedouin people and they didn’t force people to convert. They had to pay taxes to not be in the military because all men were required to join. Islam began to struggle when people went against Abu and promoted Ali, Muhammad’s cousin and son in law. They established the new capital of Damascus. They conquered the Berbers and southern Spain but they failed to completely dismantle the Byzantine Empire. The Shi’ites were for Ali and were less strict than the Sunni

Once in a lifetime each Muslim who is able must make the pilgrimage to Mecca. By the eighteenth century there were many thousands of Muslims in the United States working. Many had lost their Islamic identities because they had been cut off from their families and heritages from being brought over on slave ships. Since that time there has been an influx of up to 5 million Muslims practicing the Islam religion.
