The Brilliant Maze of Dreams and Their Hidden Meanings “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” (Roosevelt n.p.). One’s ambitions and dreams can indeed be very beautiful things. If one has ever drifted into a deep sleep wondering into a colorful world that defies all logic, then one has probably wondered where one’s dreams come from. Most everyone has woken up and wondered what in the world caused them to dream about that one specific thing or person. It is important to know what causes people to have dreams in order for one to be able to understand what one thinks about, to help one realize one’s desires and a person’s ambitions, and to aid one in processing events that have taken place in a day. Knowing what causes one to have dreams is important in order for one to know what one thinks about. What one thinks about is oftentimes a direct reflection of how a person feels. The human mind is complex and beautiful and actually processes pretty much everything one thinks about, even if one is not aware of it (Hidalgo n.p.). One’s dreams are the mind's way of subconsciously processing the things one thinks about. Moreover, when one is in overdrive or very stressed out one's mind is aware of that and filters through that …show more content…
In the book Dreams, Tucker Shaw has the idea that dreams are one’s unconscious mind trying to tell one something (Shaw 4). Shaw also says that the mind creates everyone's dreams from a blank slate (Shaw 4). With Shaw’s reasoning about dreams one can imagine one’s mind “creating” a dream like a chef would make a recipe. What this means is one’s mind takes some of one's conscious feelings and thoughts, a little of the day’s events, a little of one’s hidden wishes or aspersions, and mixes everything together to make one’s dreams. When one looks at one’s dreams close enough they can uncover desires and ambitions for one’s life one did not even see or acknowledge
Dreams are scenarios your mind creates which represents who you truly are, were and are destined to be. You 're mind creates illusions that either further enhance your knowledge on what your purpose in life is or could make you fear it. Dreams are essentially part of the foundation of a persons life. Rudolfo Anaya in the novel Bless me ultima uses the concept of dreams to demonstrate the growth and the loss of innocence Antonio faces from beginning to end.
The article “In the Dreamscape of Nightmares, Clues to Why We Dream at All”, written by Natalie Angier, introduces various types of insight on nightmares and the reasons behind why they occur. Nightmares are dreams, able to jolt you awake. Although few suffer from nightmares so terrifying that help is sought, dreams are a universal human experience. A majority of our dreamlike states are spent negatively. As a result, numerous people have studied dreams and discovered that there may be reasons behind the existence of nightmares and dreams overall.
J.K. Rowling once said, “It does not due to dwell on dreams and forget to live.” But dreams are the thing that lets many people live. During the Dream unit, videos, books and articles, and quotes were analyzed about people taking risks on their dreams. Some haven’t achieved their dreams but a lot have.Although dreaming could be harmful in some cases, dreaming is still worth it because they are something to live for, dreams can make positive impacts on the world, and they can lead to wealth and success.
Sigmund Freud, the inventor of psychoanalysis, once said that “most dreams are a sort of way for the unconscious mind to express its desire” (Freud). Sigmund Freud thought as dreams to be an idea that people strive for in life or the answer to a problem. He also concluded that dreams are “the fulfilment of a wish” (Freud). Freud thought as a dream to be something that people desire in life, or want to conquer in life. To him, dreams were something that could fulfill one’s life. However, Freud also noticed “punishment dreams and anxiety dreams” (Freud). Instead of these dreams doing something good for a person, they could be doing the opposite. Overall, one belief is that dreams can complete peoples lives, or deteriorate lives.
Dreams give people a reason to work hard and have something to look forward to in life. They are a great motivation tool that helps people look past tough times they have to work through and look forward to the good things to come. Motivation influences the level of interest and effort given to tasks, and it is essential in maintaining an individual’s performance (Reference,
Oprah Winfrey once said, “The best thing about dreams is that fleeting moment, when you are between asleep and awake, when you don't know the difference between reality and fantasy, when for just that one moment you feel with your entire soul that the dream is reality, and it really happened.” But, what actually is a dream and what do dreams really have to do with one’s everyday life? In essence, a dream is a series of mental images and emotions occurring during slumber. Dreams can also deal with one’s personal aspirations, goals, ambitions, and even one’s emotions, such as love and hardship. However, dreams can also give rise to uneasy and terrible emotions; these dreams are essentially known as nightmares. In today’s society, the concept
There are many theories about why we dream, some say dreams have no meaning or purpose, others say dreams are required for emotional, physical and mental health. According to the activation- synthesis model of dreaming theory circuits in the brain become activated during the REM cycle, which causes areas in the limbic system involved in memories, emotions and sensations become activated (verywell.com/why-do-we-dream-top-dream-theories-2795931). Sigmund Freud’s theory on dreams suggested that dreams represented unconscious desires, thoughts and motivations (verywell.com/Freudian-theory-2795845). Though these thoughts are not consciously expressed, Freud suggested they make their way into awareness via dreams.
The “dream” has changed and evolved into things dependent on the person and what
Dr. Robert Stickgold believes that an individual’s dream is formulated in a web of memories; memories that individual’s do not have clear access to during wakeful times and therefore, dreams can be a view of our unconscious. Dreams contain more of what the brain finds most essential, which could be something an individual spent the majority of a day thinking about, or something meaningful happening just prior to going to bed according to Dr. Stickgold. Moreover, Dr. Stickgold admits that our dream’s may also be the brain’s way of searching for ways to connect the complex webs of an individual’s memory, but it is not likely that our dream’s content actually fits with an individual’s beliefs or feelings. Dreams can definitely help an individual

Why do we dream? What do our dreams mean? Dreams are a sequence of images, ideas, and feelings that involuntarily occur most commonly during the REM stage of sleep. They come in a wide variety of types, from the peculiar to the downright terrifying; the dreamer has no control over what they experience in their dreams. Though neurologists have been studying the human brain for decades, we still don’t fully know why we dream or what their significance is. Some psychologists theorize that dreams are closely linked to our subconscious mind, expressing our deepest fears or desires, allowing us to be what we cannot be. Others believe that dreams serve no function at all and are simply our imaginations running wild. In the words of Sigmund Freud, the founding father of psychoanalysis, “The dream is the liberation of the spirit from the pressure of external nature, a detachment of the soul from the fetters of matter.” (The Interpretation of Dreams)
To many people, dreams are the thoughts that occur while sleeping, having almost mystic qualities. For millennia the significance of dreams has escaped even the brightest of philosophers and intellectuals. Many people have speculated about why people dream and what meanings the dreams have but in recent times two theories have gained credibility in answering those questions. The first theory is Sigmund Freuds and the other is known as the cognitive theory of dreams also known as biological determinism.
There are many theories as to why we dream. One of the most popular of theories being that of Sigmund Freud, a psychoanalyst from the eighteenth century. Freud theorised that dreams were how are unconscious minds would cope with repressed desires (Obringer, par 2). He stated
Dreams have been around as long as the first civilization came to be and have been a normal part of human existence. One third of your life is spent sleeping, and of that third, on average you will have spent a total of about six years of it dreaming. Most people dream on average two hours every night, but you can have anywhere from four to seven dreams in one night. According to research, the most common setting for a dream is in your own house. In our dreams we can do anything we want and be whoever we want to be. Our dreams are an escape from reality. While we dream we are unable to control our actions and choose our surroundings. We let our minds take over. Sometimes dreams can be understood in the context of repressed thoughts. Dreaming serves as an outlet for those thoughts and impulses we repress during the day. When we go to sleep at night and slip into our dream state, we feel liberated and behave in a manner that we do not allow ourselves to in our everyday life. Visions and ides can come from your dreams. Often, authors, screenwriters, and even poets turn to their dreams for inspiration. Dream analysis has undeniable benefits within the realm of therapy, but is by no means restricted to use in therapy. Details in dreams can represent larger ideas in a person’s life, details which can uncover the truth. A person’s dreams are knit very closely with that person’s thoughts, morals, and life. Therefore, dreams speak truth about a person; these truths can be the key that opens closed doors. Vital memories seemingly lost can be re-acquired through dream work which can improve everyday life.
