Students are required to meet each individual deadline that is presented, and this can sometimes be a monumental task. Often times, students will skip meals or run on very little sleep to meet these deadlines. This can have health consequences and could impair thinking capabilities and problem-solving skills inside and outside of the classroom. Incoming freshman should balance their time, by not procrastinating to meet deadlines, to allow adequate amounts of sleep and plenty of time for meals.
A freshman with a stressed mind will not excell in the classroom or on the practice field. Too many questions are being processed by the mind at one time to allow it to function at its optimal level. Freshmen should be encouraged to balance their time with leisurely activities as well as ones that require extra effort to maintain a healthy lifesyle. Students should understand that they are still considered “children,” no matter what they may think, and as such should find time for fun. These expectations are set in hopes that they will help students get into prestigious colleges. An NPR report featured teenagers Tom Poulis and Chelsea Halprin, who shared their thoughts on stress related to high school schedules. Poulis says, “the stress level is very high” due to taking four AP classes, standardized tests, and participating in various after school activities to enhance his college applications. Halprin hoped to attend an Ivy League school. Her schedule included time for homework, class president duties, team sports, mentoring young students, and helping at her synagogue. Despite her impressive schedule, Halprin worried that it would not be enough to meet her goals. In high schools today, most seniors are piled down with work and fatigued from after school activities and jobs. On average, most students spend 7-8 hours in school and most have after school jobs which they work for at least 6 hours. Most teachers and parents would say it’s because they’re in preparation for college and adult life. High school seniors are tensed and stressed because they are trying their best to succeed and make something out of themselves. But how can they do that if they have such busy schedule?
Time management was a vital element that I had to incorporate into my daily routine. My entire family had to adjust to the new stressors that were introduced with my decision of returning to school. The normal routine that they had grown accustomed to was no longer practical. It was difficult for them to accept that I was no longer the primary source of everyday responsibilities. This new adaptation was difficult and stressful for them to accept. However, the willingness to accept their new roles ended with a positive outcome for everyone involved.
I am performing my occupation on routine basis, but before occupational analysis activity assignment I never pay attention for my life cycle and how much time I am spending behind my daily routine tasks. This assignment helps me a lot to organize myself and learn about the time management. Poor time management skills can lead to anxiety, depression, procrastination, frustration, anger, and diminished interpersonal, and occupational interaction (Marcil,2007). From occupational analysis question one pie chart (figure1) about the activity differentiation, I found that education and performing ADLs was two of my major occupations, I am spent most of the time in these two occupations. Also, I found that work and IADLs were my next two priorities for occupations and I spent very less time for play, leisure and socialization. I believe, as a student I have to spend about fifty percent of my time for study and less time for ADL and work. Also, I found that my daily routine pattern was unbalance because of lack of sleep and less time for play, leisure. The insight I found form question two activity analysis pie chart(figure.2) that I performed most of routine occupations with energetically even though there was not balanced in real life. I believe that not all days are same for everybody, my mood changes based on environment, workload, and priorities. Some time when I come from school or work I feel lethargic and I don’t like to do anything, but my insight always encourages me to perform if I have any assignment due or exams on next day. The insight that I gains about the relationship between studies, ADLs, work, IADLs, play, leisure, and sleep/rest are not balance. High School Struggles High school can be very stressful, especially junior year. It is very evident that in the book “Overachievers: the Secret Lives of Driven Kids” by Alexandra Robbins, the students are very driven to be successful and often find themselves stressing out. Junior year is often known as the most important year of high school because students start worrying about ACT/SAT scores and they finally start looking at colleges. “But he had been told that junior year was the most stressful in high school. This was the year he had to start thinking about colleges.”

There is no way to deny that we find ourselves busier than we have ever been in the past. The only thing I found important in my life as a child was homework, baseball and He-Man. However, as we have grown, it is evident all around me; especially on a portfolio management team in a company with 69K+ employees that spans the globe. When we reach our mentally busy peaks we tend to talk too fast, be in a rush, start things and don’t finish them, and there is that little idea nagging in the back of our head saying “You forgot to do something, but I forgot what it was!” Psychologically, this is caused by a few changes in our lives over the past 15+ years in technology. Every school year, without fail, students go brain dead by the second six weeks. When looking at students’ grades, the difference between the first and second six weeks is drastic. This is a result of not having enough time to let them refresh their minds and prepare for the year. Students’ grades are suffering drastically due to exhaustion. They shut down their minds to try and not overload them, which just makes everything even worse. Students can’t go for five to seven weeks at a time without having a chance to recoup. Their minds are still developing so when forced to go for extended periods of time, they will just shut down.

In William Zinsser’s essay, “College Pressures,” he discusses the pressures that college students faced in the late 1970’s. Zinsser focuses on four main pressures, which include economic, parental, peer, and self-induced pressures. Zinsser feels that these college students are under so much pressure, but they should also realize that there is no “right” way to get ahead, and a career does not have to be preplanned. While I agree with Zinsser that these four kinds of pressures exist, I also think that there are new and different pressures today.
In school, students are supposed to be having the time of their life. During this time, they are supposed to have no stress, a balanced schedule, and time do the things they want to do. Unfortunately, for some students it isn’t like this. Many students have stress, an unbalanced schedule, and do not have time to the things they want to do. Students have many responsibilities in and out of school, these responsibilities may cause the student to become overwhelmed and stressed.
Relaxation is necessary in one’s day to day active life. A person must work hard but his energy is limited, and if he spends too much of it he will soon feel tired. Even a machine cannot work for a long time at a stretch and it is given rest at regular intervals, otherwise it gets out of order. To move out of our daily hectic schedule life or more specific to relax, we need to perform several activities of our choice to get relax, which also provide amusement, benefit to us. Some of them that I follow are dancing, swimming and watching movies or watching Television.
Without having or developing good time management skills, one may find it easier to stress out or find it easy to not make time for leisure. The results for a study conducted on 249 college students showed that the combination of anxiety reduction and effective time management affiliated with participating in leisure activities can be an effective technique for reducing academic stress (Misra & McKean, 2000, 41). The same study also states that, “campus recreation practitioners may plan leisure activities and social recreational pursuits that increase the educational benefit from leisure pursuits to help students handle their academic stress,” (Misra & McKean, 2000, 49). So therefore, there is time for leisure as long as we learn how to manage our time. Once we find time to participate in those activities we desired for so long, it will help cope with nerve-racking situations that surround our lives. Besides keeping us from stressing, leisure also keeps us entertained and it helps stirs us away from being bored.
