Society is ever changing and is only as good as the people within it. Therefore, in order to create an accepting and kind society, it’s people must accepting and kind. I contribute to my present society by volunteering in the community. As a member of Key Club, I participate in the annual Special Olympics. This past year I helped take score in the long jump event, and cheered on the Olympians, because for many of them, this one day is their favorite out of the whole year. Also, I participate in many E.A.S.T. projects, notably “The Caveman Closet.” Moreover, the closet is a place for people in the community to donate clothes and other essential items, so that low-income children can anonymously get the items they need. My personal task in the closet was organizing the placement of all the items and clothes. …show more content…
When I was a child, I would take various objects from nature, such as blades of grass or leaves, and view them under my microscope I got for christmas the previous year. As I grew, my hunger for knowledge and understanding only grew. I was always formulating new inventions that could have, in my ten year old mind, revolutionized the way we thought about the world. My interest in science, I believe, comes back to the ideal that many of my peers had at the time: things are the way they are because that is the way they have always been. This ideology simply would not compute with me, for I saw the world through a different lense. Is the world perfect? No, it is not. Therefore, we should not accept it as is; we should work to fix it. After this epiphany, I began researching all the problems of the world and how people were working to fix them. My independent studies eventually led me to choose a career field: engineering. With intense consideration, I chose biomedical engineering, because I felt like I could help the world in finding treatments ,and hopefully cures, for some of the most despicable
In a world filled with problems, why be an observer? I approach life with this mentality and for that reason am enticed by the problem solving and critical thinking abilities that engineers possess. More specifically, I am drawn towards bioengineering due to the influence that this area of study has on the medical field, and on the overall quality of life and health for humans. While the study of medicine can provide the ability to treat individuals, bioengineering can have a more universal impact, providing the ability to treat thousands with innovative medical technology. As a student who greatly values
Much credit should belong to scientists for making important technological and medical discoveries in the world. In Bishop,'sEnemies of Promise," well known scientists point out views regarding their belief in science. Representative George E. Brown, Jr., who has been trained as a physicist admits that "his faith in science has been shaken." He feels that as our knowledge of science increases, so do the occurrence of social problems. Brown, Jr. Feels that the progression of science should lead to diminishing social problems rather than an increase.(238) The real question is, is science to blame, or are the humans creating science to blame? Critics such as Brown and Lamm "blame science for what are actually the failures of individuals to use the knowledge that science has provided." Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus, is a good example of a myth about a scientist who took science to an extreme.
Knowledge, the key to progress, has proven to be a human being’s most powerful and significant weapon. We gain knowledge when we put our brain to work at the problems we need to solve in life. It doesn’t matter what we are trying to accomplish, whether it be creating a new technology or learning how to put together a puzzle, the matter of fact is that both request great examination and research to resolve and learn. Scientific research is a technique used to investigate phenomena, correct previous understanding, and acquire new knowledge. Knowledge could lead us to a possible cure for cancer, an alternative for fossil fuels, and the creation of a revolutionary technology. Nevertheless, all these benefits are a reason why
There are many things in our lives that we take for granted, such as food and clothing that are not accessible to a big portion of the population. This surplus of things that most of us have can easily be given to people who are in dire need of them. Personally, I had an abundance of clothes from when I was younger. They were things I was never going to wear again and were simply being stored, unused. Knowing that, I decided to donate the clothes to an organization that will then donate it to people who need it. My contribution was going to help someone out there in need and that felt significant. Food is also something that a lot of people do not have access to. From my peers, I notice that a
Growing up, most kids in my generation had Disney Channel or Barbie Dolls. As I was raised with 6 siblings and cousins and having just emigrated from England, my family did not have ample money to expend on cable or fancy toys; subsequently, I resorted to books. As I read more and more, my interests began to broaden, and my keen admiration and curiosity for how and why things work in certain ways progressed. As I grew older, I realized that science could be used to answer many of life’s most complex questions. Once I was accepted early into The University of Georgia, I declared my major as Biology with a pre-medical intent, deciding to further pursue my curiosity about living organisms. I soon realized that I needed to achieve more, and decided
Many people of 20th century though, turned for truth in the logic of science. It had made many things simpler for them and had offered them a better standard of living. Even so, as Cat’s Cradle demonstrates, their is both a good and evil side to science. When it is used with careless negligence, the results of manipulating nature can be formidable. It is a tool, and must be used with respect for others. Because of this, there is ultimately a limit to the truth many people search for in this field; although we can advance through science and exploration, it doesn’t take into account human ethics and morals. It therefore doesn’t offer meaning, and it doesn’t offer happiness. One must search for those realizations from
Were Neanderthals the same as modern humans, or were they an entirely different species? This is a major topic of debate among Anthropologists, and many people strongly argue each view, backing their opinion with evidence from physical remains and inferred ideas about behavior.
In today’s society, identities play a big role in a person's life. To everyone that knows me, i am identified by being the “Greek Girl” that cares greatly cares for others more than herself. I am also identified by the person that does so much volunteer work that they wonder how i keep up with all the basics. I believe, that a person who can freely offer to lend a hand does so much good impact for the community. Volunteers impact everyone they help whether it be towards school, an occurrence of a natural disaster, or church.
As a kid I was always fond of donating clothes, or helping out at my local food bank, because reaching out made me feel good and put a smile upon the ones I was giving a helping hand to and myself. Growing up, my parents have instilled within me to always give aid to those who are in hardship, because if we are fortunate enough to have everything we have ever needed, then why can’t others have the same. My drive for assisting others expanded when I joined the Interact club. I have been in Interact Club for two years, and now I am treasurer of this group which gives back to the community and other communities as well. In the Interact Club, we have donated countless of items, ranging from food to clothes to books and much more. Through the Interact
While there were many genetic differences found between Neanderthal and modern human DNA, there was also a number of genetic overlap. Genomes were taken and sequenced from Africans, New Guinean, Han Chinese, and French (Green et al. 2010). Genetic overlap and similarity was found among the French, New Guinean, and Han Chinese but there was no significant similarity found between the African genomes (Green et al. 2010). In addition, data was taken based on haplotypic differences. If there was considerable gene flow from Neanderthals to modern humans, it would be suspected that there would be similarities between Neanderthals and non-African haplotypes when compared to African haplotypes. The data found that there were haplotypes found among
Presently, humanity is a highly evolved kind that is persistently expanding the limitations of science and technology. The world of nanotechnology, interplanetary exploration, and intelligent artificial assistants are at our fingertips. These innovations, coupled with our progressive advancement seem to defy all early scepticism. Facilitated by an engaged society with borderless dreams, we gear our species to achieve what has previously been considered impossible. Through this mindset, countless intellectuals have made significant contributions to society. Louis Pasteur, for example, provided conclusive evidence against the theory of spontaneous generation, even though his experiment spanned a prolonged period of time. His work opened up frontiers in the fields of microbiology. Thomas Edison famously tested thousands of filaments for his incandescent light bulb, until he came across the perfect one. In fact, he often
There is nothing more profound about the topic of science and technology than its ability to be a partner in helping to save lives. It is so influencial in coming up with the latest drugs to combat harmful and even deadly diseases and viruses such as AIDS, and some cancers. We are where we are today because of the remarkable innovations in science and technology. The idea that lives can be saved from such innovations as a new flu vaccine, or a new type of antibiotic that can battle chicken pox, and many other diseases. Its all about the advancements that we get from science and technology that let us live the way we do. Now, we dont have to worry about dying from the chicken pox or
If we all gave back even just a little bit, imagine how close we would be. Imagine how many better things we could do together as a community! Imagine all the new residents saying, “I think I found the perfect spot to live.”, and all the elderly saying, “I’m glad I lived here.”. We aren’t there yet, but because of how everyone is starting to give back a little more, we can become that community that is one. Wouldn’t you love to live there? I know I would, so that’s why giving back to the community means a lot to me, because I want to have that experience where I get to give back and know I did something amazing today, which is giving back to my own
During a few of our classes we have learned about globalization, and a little bit more about the world we are currently in. This lesson entirely introduced me to the new problems that we are faced with today in current society. This lesson has impacted me a lot. I also learned how much donations and little actions can benefit everyone in every way. When we were putting away jackets I thought a while after about all the people who’d have something to wear this winter. The part was that they didn’t have to donate at all, but people continued to do so. It was the same with the food hamper, although we did not get many donations this year, people still had the thought to bring things in. No one was obligated to bring anything in at all, but merely encouraged. These small actions are going to be able to make others lives better.
As people, we come with earlier knowledge and understandings on subjects and topics of study, “Science” being one of them. We make presumptions, based on either reasonable evidence or that our thoughts and ideas are known as true by others. Through this we have come to understand and define science as its aims, leaving its definition, whether consciously or unconsciously, unchallenged. We have taken advantage of the label that we have set for science, as well as its goals, and failed to look at them further.
