Lily, the fourteen year old girl, and Rosaleen, run away to Tiburon, South Carolina after she finds a picture of her mother with Tiburon on the back. They find a pink house after they see honey with an exact same picture on it as one that Lily has. They find that three sisters, May, June, and August Boatwright live there. As they stay there, they feel more and more like they belong there. The movie has added and taken away some parts and scenes in the book, but also, there are some similarities.

The movie’s main theme tends to contrast two groups of people in the society. One group consists of people who come from the rural areas while the other group is that of people from the urban setting. The social norm of the people in the rural areas is based on simplicity and illiteracy. The story revolves around the murder of one of The Ward Brothers. The death of William occurs and his brother Delbert is accused of killing him. Delbert denies the allegations but before he is set free he is taken into custody and made to sign some forms.

The Secret Life of Bees begins in the town of Sylvan, South Carolina and tells the story of 14-year-old Lily Melissa Owens. She lives on a peach orchard with her neglectful and abusive father, T. Ray. They have Black maid named Rosaleen who is a companion and caretaker of Lily. The book opens with Lily's discovery of bees in her bedroom and the story of how she killed her mother. The eve before her birthday Lily sneaks out into the peach orchard to visit the box of her mother’s belongings which is buried there however before she can hide them T. Ray finds her and punishes her. The next day Rosaleen and Lily head into town where Rosaleen is arrested for pouring her bottle of tobacco spit on three white men. Lily breaks her out of prison and they begin hitchhiking toward Tiburon, SC, a town Lily had seen on the back of a picture of a black Virgin Mary which her mom had owned. They hitch a ride to Tiburon and once there, they buy lunch at a general store, and Lily sees a picture of the same Virgin Mary on a jar of honey. She asks the store owner where it came from and he gives her directions to the Boatwright house. They then meet the makers of the honey: August, May and June Boatwright, who are all black. Lily makes up a wild story about being recently orphaned. The sisters welcome Rosaleen and Lily into their home. They are then introduced to beekeeping and the Boatwright’s way of life. Lily learns more about the Black Madonna honey that the sisters make. She begins working

“The Possibility Of Evil” by Shirley Jackson has many different forms of symbolism. One piece of symbolism is Miss Strangeworth’s roses, throughout the story she takes care of them. “Miss Strangeworth never gave away any of her roses, although tourists often asked her.” This piece of evidence shows how Miss Strangeworth is protective of her roses. Another piece of evidence to support the authors form of symbolism is when she cared and tended to the plants throughout the story. Throughout the story, tone is used to relate objects to real people. One form of tone is when Miss Strangeworth talks about her roses. “My grandmother planted these roses, and my mother tended them, just as I do.” This statement shows how Miss Strangeworth cared and tended the roses just as someone would care to a child. Jackson uses many forms of symbolism, and roses were just one of them.

Seemingly, the flowers represent Elisa. She believes she is strong and tough and able to accomplish anything thrown her way; however, taken for granted as she is only a woman allowed to look and act accordingly. Surrounding the flowers is a wire fence set up to keep out predators and to separate the flowers from the rest of the farm. The wire fence is symbolic in the fact that it is identical to the world Elisa lives in. Elisa is contained within the farm, unable to explore or leave without the help of someone else. Elisa is stuck on the farm, isolated from the rest of the world so that she can be kept safe. Naive and unaware of how the world works, her husband keeps her on the farm to protect her from harm. When Elisa gives the chrysanthemum to the travelling merchant, she gives him a small piece of herself. Later, as her and her husband are driving to town, she sees the flower tossed aside as though it was nothing; as a result, she realizes she could never go off on and live the way the merchant had. The flowers embody her character still, and how out of her home without protection, the world can be harsh and cruel. In short, Elisa’s isolation leaves her ignorant, unable to understand how callous the world is, and comes to the bleak realization that she can’t live a life anywhere outside of her fence. Because of how women were treated, constantly pushed down and unable to pursue their interests, Elisa is left unable to learn what life has to offer. Learning

Lily recalls her very last memory of her mother, Deborah, who died when Lily was a small child. Lily thinks that she played a horrible part in Deborah’s death. In a flashback, readers learn that T. Ray told Lily that she accidentally shot Deborah while Deborah and T. Ray were fighting one day.

The title of the story is “The Flowers.” When you think about flowers, you instantly compare them to being beautiful, pure, and innocent. The title of the “The Flowers” is a symbolism that correlates to Myop who is the protagonist of the story. Myop is just like a flower in the beginning of the story. She’s a pure and innocent child but that pure innocence changes when she discovers something that’ll change her life forever.
