The character in which I feel I can relate to the most would have to be Edna Pontellier. Not simply because she’s the main protagonist of the story, but essentially due to the fact that throughout a majority of the novel I understood where she was coming from. The whole idea of wanting to live a life that was never yours to live is a desire I can empathize with on a very deep and personal level. In the beginning of the story, Edna is constricted by the rules of society. She feels like she has to abide by these rules or else face the consequences of not fitting in. So one can easily state that Edna uses the people around her as stepping stones to grow and expand as both a physical and spiritual human being. Something I and a lot of other people do as well, we learn from our friends and we tend to pick up habits. I know personally, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish or even consider doing a lot of the growing up I’ve done if it weren’t for the fact that I had such strong and differentiating influences around me. Much like Edna, these people allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and discover things about myself in unique and fascinating ways. Birth, whether of children or desires, existplays an active motif throughout The Awakening. Edna Pontellier, as one of the leading characters, is a child discovering her very sense of self. Her attitude toward her children reveals that she is not the typical “mother-woman” the preferable type of woman in Edna’s society. The term, mother-woman is a reductive one which implies a singular purpose or value. The mother-woman is a mother; being one defines and regulates every aspect of her life. (51). The ending of Kate Chopin’s The Awakening is both controversial and thought provoking. Many see Edna Pontellier’s suicide as the final stage of her “awakening”, and the only way that she will ever be able to truly be free. Edna’s suicide, however, is nothing more than her final attempt to escape from her life. Edna Pontellier’s life has become too much for her to handle, and by committing suicide she is simply escaping the oppression she feels from her marriage, the suppression she feels from her children, and the failure of her relationship with Robert.
The Awakening by Kate Chopin ends with the death of the main character, Edna Pontellier. Stripping off her clothes, she swims out to sea until her arms can no longer support her, and she drowns. It was not necessarily a suicide, neither was it necessarily the best option for escaping her problems.

In chapter one, the relationships of Mr. and Mrs. Pontellier and Robert are already shown, even if very briefly. When all of them are watching the Pontellier’s sons playing croquet, most of their feelings for each other and their relationships are shown. Mrs. P and Robert begin to flirt. Mr. P gets annoyed and goes to the Klein’s hotel, he asks Robert to come with him. Robert refuses, Mr. P then making a passive/aggressive comment to Mrs. P stating that she should send Robert to the hotel when he bores her. Also before this, Mr. P comments on how sunburnt they are, for no reason, just to say so. This shows that the relationship between Mr. and Mrs. Pontellier isn’t really good. These first thirteen chapters chronicle the daily life of Edna Pontellier, The Awakening’s protagonist. The novel opens on Mr. Pontellier; he is smoking a cigar and reading the newspaper while idly observing the life and activity around him. The novel turns its attention to his wife, Edna Pontellier. She is described as “rather handsome than beautiful” and has a face with a “certain frankness of expression,” an intriguing description if there ever was one. She is accompanied by Robert Lebrun, the son of Madame Lebrun, the owner of “the house” at which the Creole aristocracy stayed on the Grand Isle. They are rather close companions; Robert has chosen to follow her around for the summer, as is later revealed to be his custom. Edna Pontellier is a woman of great needs. Although she has a husband who cares for her and two children, she is very unhappy. She plays her roles as a mother and wife often, but still keeps doing things unmarried, barren women should do: enjoy the company of other men, ignore her children's cries, dress unladylike for the times. The story is set in the late 1800's, when women were to be in the kitchen preparing a meal for their family, giving birth to more children to help with daily chores, or sitting quietly at home, teaching the children while the husband was at work. While other children of the times may have a pseudo unhealthy reliance on a mother, much like Robert's brother Victor who still lives at home. Another more risky thing she did was make a statement that most women even now wouldn't agree with. Edna states: “I would give up the unessential; I would give up my money, I would give my life for my children; but I wouldn't give myself.”(Chopin 47) This statement holds quite a lot of weight in the way we can view edna. Some may call her selfish for a lack of an undying love for her children. But I view it as brutal honesty. The fact that edna is coming to this conclusion and fighting the ever pushing stream of society really shows how she is trying to fight. Giving up one's self is a very dangerous thing to do. For once you give too much you can lose who you are. But too little and people can lose sight of what you can be/who you are. As a mother edna realizes this and decides to make herself known in a different way than as a mother-woman.
Since the beginning of time social constrictions have always retained a firm grasp on the ideas and actions of humanity. While it remains a formidable foe, still some choose to fight back against the norm. This never-ending war is responsible for major advancements in the social order, but not every story is so successful. In Kate Chopin’s “The Awakening”, Edna Pontellier finds herself fighting this very battle that, although begins with a positive outlook, ultimately ends in her demise.
