Imagine the idea of living in a society where you are segregated from your peers as a result of the colour of your skin. Envision living in a place that you no longer wish to call home because the people around you are being eradicated left right and center.

Over 100 years ago, the term slaves arose when blacks were separated from their families and freedom. They were forced into hard working labor and all rights obtained previously was confiscated by white individuals. Approximately 50 years ago, the Civil Rights movement was conducted in order to restore the equal rights under the American law. Currently, those of color are still constantly fighting to regain rights and justice that was seized from them years ago. Approximately 5 years ago, the Black Lives Matter movement became an active nationwide organization involved to protecting the lives of African Americans, all occurring due to the unjustifical death of Trayvon Martin. Because of this rash of recent deaths, Black Americas have started an initiative to ban together to fight the racial injustice in this country. Black Lives Matter is an organization of American activist who created a grassroots movement to abolish the degradation and demonization of Blacks Americans. This movement formed after the shooting death, of Florida Black American teen Trayvon Martin, whose killer George Zimmerman, was released on an acquittal. Imagine taking your time getting ready with your family for a nice evening dinner at a fancy restaurant. Upon arriving, you walk into the restaurant with your empty stomach ready to indulge in a fifty dollar steak when the hostess tells you to leave. No this is not because they don’t have enough room to seat you and your family down, in fact the restaurant was quite empty, but it’s because they don’t serve people of your own race. This type of incident was just another typical experience of an African American throughout the twentieth century, but believe it or not this kind of cruel behavior stills exists in the United States to this very day. Even after all the black civil rights movement, Blacks are continuously getting oppressed, especially by whites, of their equal rights which completely go against the most rudiments of any society’s rules and are entirely unethical.

Black lives matter is a movement that started after Trayvon Martin was murdered. George Zimmerman was the man who shot Trayvon, and George was found innocent. The movement sparked from this event and continued to grow as more and more events like the Trayvon Martin killing began to surface. The purpose of this movement is to end police brutality and racism against black men and women (Black Lives Matter, 2016). Police brutality is a major issue in the United States. Over the last few years, the media has brought more attention to this brutality than ever before. Many races believe that they are being targeted by police more often than others particularly black men. The media has brought so much attention to these crimes that people have formed organizations like Black lives matter, and people have started protesting after the events. Many people believe that all cops are racist, there are no good cops anymore, but that is simply not true. Police have a very hard job to do, and sometimes a few bad seeds can give an entire organization a bad reputation. Because of these peoples beliefs, many protests have occurred. Several of these protest have turned violent and became riots. These riots are hurting the communities physically and financially. During these riots, states bring in more police so that they can protect their citizens, but because people are so upset over this more innocent people are being killed. As a child, growing up you are taught that in America everyone regardless of race has certain civil liberties and freedoms that many of our ancestors fought for and paid with their lives. But as you age and grow wiser, you face the fact that many of us are still discriminated tormented and even killed because of their race.You come to the realization that black people today are not truly free. In 2013,George Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges after wrongfully killing an innocent black teenager, Trayvon Martin. As a result, the Black Lives Matter movement,which started as a hashtag on twitter, emerged as the modern day civil rights movement. Over the past decade, BLM activists gave a new voice and platform to marginalised communities, especially the black community. They organized manifestations, protests and sit-ins that were very successful. For example, BLM organized demonstrations in Ferguson that caught national attention after another white officer wrongfully killed Michael Brown a year later. Black lives Matter’s agenda also included meetings and discussions with law enforcers on how to ameliorate policing in these communities.

The current political climate in America over the death of unarmed black men has led to our generation newest current civil rights movement, Black Lives Matter. The purpose of Black Lives Matter is “to build local power and to intervene when violence was inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes...and to imagining and creating a world free of anti-Blackness, where every Black person has the social, economic, and political power to thrive”(Black Lives Matter). The Black Lives Matter movement seeks to achieve a society where African Americans don’t have to fear racial profiling, fear being killed by police officers, or to judge by the color skin and not by their character. The Civil Rights Movement has a legacy steeped in integration and the successes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The progression of radicalism within the movement and the division between the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee eventually led to the rise of the Black Power Movement. In the early 1900’s Black unrest was starting to become permanent. African Americans across the US were realizing the situation they were in wasn’t right. They felt as though they needed to be treated equal and as actually people functioning in society. Leaders started to emerge such as W.E.B DuBois and Booker T. Washington. W.E.B DuBois was a scholar and political thinker who helped in finding the NAACP. He felt as though more Blacks needed to be educated in order to make a change. Booker T. Washington was an educator and reformer who did the opposite of DuBois. He believed that Blacks should accept discrimination as it was and try and focus on bettering themselves. The Black Lives Matter movement is a movement that wants to liberate the inequality that the black community faces, yet to Tomi Lahren, the Black Lives Matter movement is equal to the sadistic and twisted views of the KK. Black Lives Matter is not a hate group. Many misinterpret the purpose of Black Lives Matter. Black Lives Matter is a voice for the oppressed, the movement is an important artifact in the history of civil rights movement, and unites not only black lives but all lives.

What is Black Lives Matter? Black Lives Matter is a movement founded by Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, and Alicia Garza. It was created to fight anti-Black Racism, systematic oppression and violence against the Black community.

Black Lives Matter. They do, however why is it that Black Lives Matter isn’t “All Lives Matter”? or why aren’t there multiple “Lives Matter” slogans for different races? All legitimate questions. Black Lives Matter, also shortened to BLM, is an civil rights movement campaigning to intervene with police brutality against black people, but why black people specifically? In February 2013, a young boy named Trayvon Martin, at the not-so-ripe age of 17, was shot to death. He was a young black boy. Trayvon was innocent, heading back from a local store, carrying an iced tea and a bag of sweets, when he was killed. Alicia Garza is a black woman. This event has resonated with her as she has a younger brother of similar build and felt it could have been him just as easily. Garza expressed her feeling through a series of tweets on a popular site, twitter.com, with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter, and so the movement was born, but perhaps the movement gained more attention after the killing of young, and black, Michael Brown. Both these young boys were unarmed and not dangerous to anyone around them.

A close examination of the online representation of a fringe community or counterculture would be the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement is a community in America that has represented itself after all of the many innocent African American lives that have taken by law enforcement and the Caucasian male who went into the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and opened fire on the members of the church. The Black Lives Matter movement has become a worldwide movement for those of the African American culture. According to the website, blacklivesmatter.com, “This is Not a Moment, but a Movement. #BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was post-humously placed on trial for his own murder. Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our de-humanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society. Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes” (blacklivesmatter.com). A personal example I can provide was when I saw the movie “Straight Outta Compton.” This movie showed scenes of the police beating an African American male who was not doing anything wrong.
