Writing is a skill that is learned, taught and most importantly dreaded by most students. This includes students of all ages but however if you have trouble with writing or coming up with a thesis statement you can always use the closed-open continuum. The closed-open continuum is a structure demonstrating different levels of determining how to propose your thesis and structure your writing. The closed side of the continuum is top down- thesis based prose, this means that you introduce your thesis at the beginning of the introduction. Top down-thesis based consists of your typical five paragraph essay. This also means that you will be introducing your thesis in the introduction paragraph. Personally, from the class of English 1101, I have learned on how to use the writing processes effectively, where the first step is to have a pre-write, which focuses on brainstorming ideas form either the group or from individuals’ brain for the required topic. The second phase of the process is the thesis statement, which is the primary idea of the entire essay. I discovered that the thesis statement should be persuasive and truthful. The third step is on developing drafts, where it showed me on how to focus on content, organization, and style. Again, I noted that I must ask myself who is my audience, and what do they want or need to hear.
A thesis should also be written with the reader in mind with a road map they could follow along easily. A road map is basically the direction you want your reader to take when reading your essay. You want your thesis to start at the beginning and power forward clearly to the end. No detours, no circles. If you write with the reader in mind you are more likely to communicate successfully. The reader should not waste the effort that would go into understanding the substance of the writing, in order to guess what the writer intended to mean. You have to lead the reader in
Thesis statements tend to come from nonfiction texts, and are directly stated by the author, with no wiggle room for interpreting the meaning as any different than it is stated. Thesis statements are also debatable arguments, which is what makes them a thesis. They are also stated early in the nonfiction or other work the thesis is present in. The work that the thesis statement is in does not have to be reflected upon in order to understand the thesis statement, and the reading can hasten with the reader still holding understanding after reading. With thesis statements I have learned that there are generally only a few places that they should be in the paper, at the beginning in the first paragraph or, at the end of the first paragraph, we do this so that we can use that thesis statement to lead the reader into the subjects being discussed in the first few pages, after the introduction. My personal thought is that it can be either or. If you put your thesis in the first few sentences, scholars view this as a less exciting way to use the thesis and, that it does not help the transition of leading into the topics being examined, which I tend to agree with, although many have done it

Thesis is a short statement that recaps the main point of a piece of writing. The thesis statement is developed in the text by use of examples and evidence. This presets the main idea, and states the authors opinion. It is a guide for the rest of the paper, and it keeps the topic focused. Thesis creates a more general idea by condensing the passage into a single sentence.
When writing an essay or summary, one of the most important factors I feel helps the reader understand what the essay will be about is the thesis. Having a well-structured thesis is helpful because it gives me an idea of what I want the general direction of my paper to be. For example, in my literary, in my thesis I write, “In the essay ‘Pride’ by Dagoberto Gilb, he shows how even though people are poor and Mexican American they can find pride in their culture, work, and success.” (“Have Pride In Where You Come From” Final 1). In writing an essay I also struggle with incorporating clear topic sentences and connecting my paragraphs ideas back to my thesis statement. This struggle is based on last years’ experience with writing essays. This struggle can be improved upon by concentrating on what exactly my thesis is stating and building my sentences to relate and explain the thesis further. Improving on this will allow my writing ability to increase and help me become a more successful writer.
