BACKGROUND PAPER

THE BAHAMAS 1. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas, one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean is composed of 700 islands, cays, and islets. The Bahamas are located in the Atlantic Ocean with close proximity to the United States, located north of Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The British Crown made The Bahamas a colony in 1718 in an overall effort to reduce the amount of piracy throughout the region, and the Bahamas remained under British rule until 1973, when it became an independent commonwealth. After gaining its independence the nation established diplomatic ties with the United States. Since the start of formal diplomatic relations, the United States has played an essential role as a major economic partner and consumer, as well as, a key partner in the nation’s politics, economics, and counter narcotic efforts.
2. The Commonwealth of the Bahamas governs itself with the utilization of a constitutional, parliamentary democracy that was carried over from British colonization. The constitution of The Bahamas, assumed at independence is fashioned on the Westminster model. The two-house parliament comprises the House of Assembly and the Senate, that both have similarity to the Congress of the United States. The only differentiation is in the Bahamas the modicum of power is mainly restricted to the House of Assembly rather than shared with the Senate. Queen Elizabeth II is documented as head of state but the position is
In addition to an elected House of Representatives and an appointed Senate (upper house), the Parliament consists of a ceremonial head, the Queen, or in her absence the Governor-general. The Governor-general nominates the twenty-one members of the Senate: thirteen on the Prime Minister's advice and eight on the opposition leader's advice. The sixty House of Representative members are elected by the citizens of Jamaica based on popular vote. "The Jamaican Constitution requires that the Prime Minister call a general election no later than five years after the first sitting of the previous Parliament" (Government and Politics). In order to qualify for
Cultures and traditions differ all around the world. The Bahamas is an outstanding place to stay for vacationing. What people don’t realize is the Bahamas is not only a honeymoon get away. People live in the Bahamas where they celebrate holidays, and follow traditions. Something as simple as marriage, holidays and the geography is different in the Bahamas than it would be in the United States. The United States and the Bahamas are very different but very similar at the same time.
Cuba is a nation that formed from a history of colonial and imperial domination. Formal colonial status under Spain ended during the invasion by the United States in 1898, when military and corporate interests made the island a de facto colony of the United States. However, Cuba and the United States have had a long history of both political and military ties; both good and bad. Nevertheless, these ties have played a vital role in the current relationship the United States maintains with Cuba. In the recent years, both countries have continued to work toward a better diplomatic relationship; possibly enhancing the overall success of both Cuba and the United States.
In the Caribbean Sea, located south of the Gulf of Mexico, lies the 149th largest nation in the world, The Republic of Haiti. Since its discovery in 1492, Haiti has experienced a multitude of dictators and inconceivable political and economic turmoil lasting intermittently, over the last 300 years. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the nation of Haiti, its politics and social relations, its economics and resources, and lastly the United States’ interests in regards to the Nation.
The Queen, who is represented by the Governor General, is the head of state and the Prime Minister is the head of Government.

The Caribbean is a vastly diverse area representing the effects of colonialism, slavery, and the combination of many cultures.
On a cold wintery 10 degrees day in December Blaize decided he was going to go on a cruise ship with his friends to the Bahamas where the weather has been 75-80 degrees . Blaize and his friends Seth, Matt, Leonard, and Cameron all enjoy many of the same things. The cruise was to visit the Bahama islands and Cuba. On our way to the Bahamas we went through some extremely rough waters. The captain came over the loudspeaker and we were all told to “go to your rooms and stay in them until told otherwise” in a firm frightened voice. We all thought, “why, what is happening but we did as we were told. After sitting in our room for over an hour Seth, Cameron, Leonard, Matt, came up with the idea to explore the ship. When we opened the
The Bahamas The Bahamas is full of a vast array of inimitable little islands, populated by the laid back people of the Caribbean. Great Exuma is one of these, a place of warm tranquillity and relaxation, a place where peace can be found. A minute number of people inhabit the 90 mile stretch of land where you will find an amazing variety of wildlife.
The Bahamas being from the Caribbean islands has a strict government and law enforcement along with their corrections system. Besides them having a different type of government they still have certain features that can be compared to the United States of America. Not all rights are being guaranteed to everyone the way they should be. The Bahamas has stronger regulations on certain things that other countries do not have. They respect the right of foreign people when they are arrested. They join another country to better the conditions of those in prison. Both the Bahamas, and the United States of America are trying to fight against a big problem that is currently happening. Besides it being a different country there are similarities with it, and perhaps even offer suggestions to improve their systems. Every country should have the goal to serve and protect their people, as well as to provide them the same law equality as everyone else.
The Bahamas is known for its warm sunshine, perfect climate, and pristine beaches with crystal clear water lapping at the shores. It is one of the most popular and beautiful tourist destinations in the world and attracts thousands of travelers every year. Though gorgeous strips of sand ring every island of this 700-island archipelago, it is a multifaceted destination and offers a variety of exclusively Bahamian experiences for every type of traveler.
As far as I can recall my existing knowledge from kindergarten to high school, Columbus has always been described as a heroic figure who overcame countless obstacles fearlessly and finally found the “New World.” For a long time, there were numerous authors, poets, and painters praising Columbus’s legendary journey and his extraordinary contribution to mankind. However, after reading “The Discovery of the Bahamas,” the sailing logs written by Columbus, I figured that Columbus may not be such a man who is worthy of all the praises. There are two literary works related to the subjects. The painting, “Christopher Columbus at the royal court of Spain,” was created in 1884 by Václav Brožík, and depicts Columbus requesting, from Queen Isabella, King Ferdinand and groups of courtiers, funding for additional voyages. The poem, “Prayer of Columbus,” written by Walt Whitman in 1874, expresses Columbus’s praise of God for all his achievements, believing that God would still be on his side even though he had been through all the sufferings. While Brožík’s painting creates imagery, directly expressing Columbus’s ambition by his posture, and implied Spaniards’ eagerness of power and building empires with the reactions of Queen Isabella I and Ferdinand V and a gathering of courtiers, Whitman employs repetition and religious iconography to create a sharp contrast between Columbus’s fearless, unconquerable mind in his early life and his helplessness at the end of his last voyage.
