The health concern that was identified in the community health assessment for Pinellas County (Pinellas) was the high lung cancer incidence rate. The rate of 69.1 per 100,000 population is higher than the state of Florida and the United States average rate (“Community Commons & IP3,” 2016). Possible factors that can contribute to this concern include tobacco usage, lack of health insurance, lack of physical activity, and poor nutrition. A population diagnosis statement for this health concern is risk for increasing number of deaths from lung cancer among the community in Pinellas related to the increased number of tobacco usage as demonstrated by high self-reporting data percentages. Based on this the primary health issue for Pinellas is the increased prevalence of tobacco usage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2015), the number one risk factor for lung cancer is cigarette smoking. Using other tobacco products such as cigars or pipes also increases the risk for lung cancer. Tobacco smoke is a toxic mix of more than 7,000 chemicals. Vulnerable populations for increased tobacco usage are those living below poverty, the homeless, those with low education levels, those with low income levels, the uninsured, and those suffering from mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders. Three evidenced-based interventions for the health issue are mobile phone-based cessation interventions, comprehensive tobacco control programs, and smoke free
This study by Naughton et al. (2014) was conducted to identify the effectiveness of the iQuit program, a self-help program supported by text messaging, as an adjunct to smoking cessation education offered in the primary care setting. The authors report smoking cessation offered in the primary care setting varies widely but research showed the added option of a self-help program for patients produces a cessation rate of as much as twice the rate of those patients who were given only in- office education (Naughton et al.).

The relatable health problem is tobacco use. Tobacco can be used in many ways, but most commonly it is smoked or chewed. I chose this health topic because it is a concerned of mine on how many young adults use tobacco. According to healthy people 2020, “10.9 percent of young adults aged 18 to 25 years who had not previously used tobacco products in their lifetime first used tobacco products in the past 12 months in 2008” This shows that young adults are trying and experimenting at a young age. I will be doing
Therefore, individual biology and behaviors influence health through their interaction with each other and with the individual’s social and physical environments (Nies, 2015). The Wakulla community express positive and negative behaviors towards health promotion and illness avoidance. According to Florida Charts, nearly two-thirds of White Wakulla County residents have had a medical checkup in the past year and 80% of adults in Wakulla County have some type of health insurance. However, one quarter (26.5%) of Wakulla County residents report they are currently smoking. For this reason, community/ health nurses must reinforce positive behaviors in the community to prevent

In this county, there is an 11.9% of families living below the poverty level. These families cannot afford health insurance or access to the health care facilities that are in the surrounding towns, due to lack of transportation or funds. The rate of respiratory rated deaths in Baker County is 75% higher than the average for Florida (Health D. o., 2014). After conducting my interview with this family, I learned that there were several health concerns for this aggregate that were related to their dietary habits, lack of exercise and tobacco use. In Baker County there is a high rate of smoking at 28% and 70% state they have tried to quit at least once (Johns, 2010). It has been proven that smoking is the cause of 30% of general cancer deaths and 80% of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. Lung cancer has also been found to be the biggest cause of cancer deaths among breast cancer, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer. This year alone, 190,500 of about 600,900 cancer deaths will be caused by smoking tobacco. This means that one in every three cancer patients will die due to tobacco products. In fact, smoking tobacco caused such high amounts of lung cancer that tobacco companies are legally required to include a surgeon general’s warning that outlines the potential of developing cancer on their packaging. The numbers and warnings of smoking-related lung cancer can be seen everywhere from statistics to the companies themselves being held liable for the illnesses their products
A community health assessment is a fundamental instrument of public health practice. Its objective is to depict the health of the community, by presenting information on health standing, community health needs, resources, and epidemiologic and other studies of present local health problems. It seeks to recognize target populations that may be at augmented risk of poor health results and to increase a better understanding of their needs, as well as evaluates the larger community surroundings and how it relate to the health of people. It also identifies those areas where better information is desired, particularly information on health differences amid different subpopulations, quality of health care, and the incidence and severity of disabilities in the population. The Community Health Assessment is the foundation for all local public health development, giving the local health component the instance to recognize and network with key community leaders, businesses and concerned residents about health priorities and concerns. This information shapes the foundation of improving the health status of the community by way of a strategic plan (The Municipal Public Health Services Plan Community Health Assessment Guidance and Format, n.d.).
Based on the combined data provided by two surveys suggest that cell phones and smartphones are not just a practical alternative tool suitable to be used in smoking cessation program. Mobile phones are freely accessible and thus can be a functional source that could provide those who want quite a discrete avenue to do so. The same can be said for the opposite as mobile phones can also provide a public forum for those who want to intervene and force someone they know to quit smoking cigarettes.

When the six hundred ingredients in a cigarette are burned, 7,000 chemicals begin to generate within the body; sixty-nine of them causinge cancer. Similar ingredients are found in cigars, electronic cigarettes, marijuana, pipes, and hookahs. Death rates of smoking are continuously growing since cancer is currently incurable. From 2005 to 2009, 63,400 women and 100,300 men have died in the United States because of smoking-related cancers (Pietrangelo). This can heavily affect someone's loved ones. Expanding the smoking ban throughout Iowa and the entire United States can put an end to this. Smoking is unfavorable for the human body and is the cause of several health issues. The shared concern among medical professionals about the potential for higher mortality rates among men over fifty due to smoking has prompted medical professionals to encourage more lung cancer screening. Screening is recommended for all men and women under the age of 80 who are present smokers or were smokers in the past. De Koning et al. (2014) identify three sub-categories for current and past smokers between 55 and 80 years old. One category covered those with 25 years since stopping, or 20 or less pack-years. In addition, also categorized were those with 15 years since quitting, and those still smoking. The latter had over 30 pack-years’ worth of smoking tobacco and were at the most risk of lung cancer and mortality. More lung deaths can be avoided through routine screening examinations with a minimum frequency of one per year (De Koning et al., 2014). Even those who quit smoking more than 25 years ago were still at risk of developing lung cancer, therefore it is still productive for these seemingly helthy ex-smokers to undergo screening. While this has helped identify lung cancer in its early stages, thus making it treatable and more easily curable, the greatest benefit in reduced fatality goes to those who quit smoking within 15 years of the De Koning et al. (2014) study.

According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015), cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths every year, or 1 of every five deaths. In 2015, about 15 of every 100 U.S. adults age 18 years or older currently smoke cigarettes. However, this is a decline from nearly 21 of every 100 adults back in 2005. One reason for the decline is due to smoking cessation programs developed within our communities. These programs are helping smokers to quit their habit, and improve their health and lifestyle. Let us look at what it takes to make a smoke cessation successful within ones’ community.
