The Current Style Of Educating Our Children

The general consensus is that we want our children to be educated. The effectiveness of the current style of educating our children is a subject of hot debate. Our antiquated school system has been showing its age, and we are finding out more and more about what school hasn’t taught us. We no longer want to just put in children and get out “educated” children, we want to make sure that the education we are giving our children is actually helping them learn the skills they need for the adult world. We are spending over $101 billion [1] of federal tax money, (3% of the total budget*1), per year trying to fund this education. With that much spending, don’t you want to know if schools are working or not?

There are a very large number of possibilities for improving the school system in a meaningful way. They are all possible if we exclude the two factors that keeps most of these things from happening: money and the government. We have all heard on the news how long government officials take to make decisions. Add on the schools’ very small budget, and we get a very slowly evolving system.

We need to make use of any and all chances we get to make positive changes in the school system, and in order to do that, we need to prioritize and deal with the important things first. I hypothesize that improving teacher training will be the most beneficial to schools because it allows the teachers to better convey their knowledge of the subject to the children.
