All the things that have happened in the United States in the last 10 years. There is a few that have affected the citizens of the United States more than others. It is our goal as American’s to up hold the values that America offers to make it the best country to live in as possible. The three things I believe has changed the world we live in is: the day the Twin Towers came crashing down, the invention of the iPhone changed the way we looked at mobile devices, and many mass shootings and bombings have destroyed more lives than others.
When the Twin Towers in New York came crashing down there was a dramatic effect in the United States from that day on. Airline security increased dramatically after 9/11. Before 9/11 any one could get a plane ticket to fly anywhere in the world. “At that time there were no real regulations with regards to employee or passenger background checks”. (Taylor, Alycia). Prior to 9/11 there was not near the tension about flying as there is today. New Regulations have been set in place since 9/11. "criminal background checks on 750,000 airport employees, the presence of more law enforcement, the screening of all checked baggage with whatever means available, including X-ray machines and hand inspections, the placement of more air marshals on flights, and more passengers will be pre-screened, with more cross-checking with FBI and other watch lists for suspicious passengers". (Taylor, Alycia). These short term effects happened rather quickly after the
Air Travel is one of the main things that was majorly affected by 9/11. One of the main components of air travel that had changed was security. Almost immediately after 9/11 the government issued Aviation and Transportation Security Act which then lead to Transportation Security Administration, TSA for short. Because of this security check became stricter and new procedures were introduced and enforced. Some of these new procedures are as the following: weapons and destructive item checks, only passengers with tickets were allowed to go through and pass security, restriction on liquids and contaminants in luggage, and guidelines passengers must follow.
The terrorist attacks of September 11, altered American 's perceptions of the role in the world by strongly supporting the increased spending on national security and counterterrorism. Also, Americans have become more aware of how and where to engage in the world. As a result of the attacks, the US now has a defense that totals to nearly half the global total and has military dominance over scene, air, and space. The US also has the capability to dispatch massive military power anywhere in the world making them the system shaper. You may ask yourself just have a bad or do you check on September 11, 2001 was that led to this chaos and security becoming abnormally tight you may ask yourself just have a bad do you check on September 11, 2001
The September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks forever changed the way our air travel industry operates. It affected the government, the airlines, airports, employees, and passengers alike. There was not as much of a threat of terrorism before 9/11, so airport security was not nearly as thorough, and at times intrusive as it is today. Through the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration, the evolving threat of terrorism has not been successful in carrying out another 9/11 style attack.
Prior to 9/11, commercial airport security was minimal. The most an individual had to do was remove the coin change in their pockets or maybe even taking off belts that had particularly large buckles and walking through a metal detector. Not today. Now there are full body scanners at some airports. Twelve years ago, non-ticketed visitors could escort their loved ones departing to airline gates. No today. Security prior 9/11 was what I would say is lackadaisical. There was a point in time where pilots would fly with the cockpit doors open, and they would even invite younger children to the cockpit to take a glimpse at the controls. Not today. Currently, the cock pit door stays closed, usually with a flight attendant standing guard in front of it. Prior to 9/11, you only had to show ID when you were checking in and only two questions were asked: Did you pack your own bags? Have your bags been seen outside your control? No today. Now all luggage, carry ons included, are searched by TSA agents. Today, on every flight, there are at least one to two officers disguised for
The most obvious change sense 9/11 is U.S airport security and regulations. One of the biggest reasons why 9/11 was such a success for the Al-Qaeda group hijacking of the planes was 100% the airports unsuccsessful security. They were able to board the planes and go through metal detectors at the checkpoint. Thats why just a few short months after 9/11 occured the United States declared the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) is improving public safety while traveling through major transportation areas like airports. Many major airports have TSA, meanwhile some not so large airports have private agencies that are similar to TSA. Americans have had to undergo significant changes in their travel habits and this change seemed to be the
September 11, 2001 was a milestone in the history of the United States, which experienced a collective shock and trauma that has never been forgotten. In the United States most of all, the entire airline and tourist industry was driven to the edge of bankruptcy and would not have survived at all without a major bailout by the federal government. It was already in poor condition for many years after deregulation in 1978, the September 11th attacks were a Near Death Experience. After that time, the airlines decided that they could never permit another attack like this or they would be driven out of business. As it was, their stock prices collapsed and passenger schedules did not return to pre-September 11th levels for four years. All previous security plans were judged to be useless and inadequate, and were taken out of the hands of private security contractors and turned over to the federal government. New and more restrictive laws like the Patriot Act came into being, and the U.S. launched an all-out war on Al Qaeda that has continued for eleven long years.
Airport security pre 9/11 was very unorganized which is what led to such a cotastrophy. The job of aviation security was largly dealt with by private security firms which led to incunsistency, and the FAA did an inadequarte job at keeping these inconsistencies in check. According to a 1987 FAA test 20% of dangerous items were missed by the airport screeners, and as time went on that percentage worsened “Test data for the 1991 to 1999 period show that the declining trend in detection rates continues.” (GAO, 2001a, p. 6). Due to this lack of organization 5 planes were able to be hijacked on the same day. This act of terrorism made apperant that that the job of aviation protection had to be taken out of the handss of the FAA and be made more of a federal issue. From
One effect 9/11 had on the world was airplane security. Before 9/11 airports around the world followed their own security guidelines. Two months after the attack the Aviation and Transportation Security Act was set in place. In other words that act created the Transportation
Just when New York's future seemed uncertain the Twin Towers came to the rescue. The buildings were huge the North tower was 1,368 feet tall and the South was 1,362 feet tall. In nice weather you can see 45 miles out. They both weighed 250,000 ton and had 99 elevators! The buildings had 21,800 windows and enough concrete to build a sidewalk from New York City to Washington. The tragic day all started when terrorists hijacked four planes and aimed them for buildings. They first aimed two planes at the Twin Towers. Then they aimed one at the Pentagon. Then they aimed the last one for the White House, fortunately people on the plane fought back and crashed the plane in a field in Pennsylvania. The Towers did the most damage when they fell they
Perhaps the imminent and drastic changes after the attacks took place in U.S. airports: after the attacks, Congress changed airport security by passing the Aviation and Transportation Security Act. Before this time, each individual airport would handle its security, which outsourced private security companies. The new bill implemented procedures that made guidelines more strict on passengers and their luggage. Now, passengers aren't allowed fluids on planes as well as the new policy that requires passengers to remove their shoes. Besides the new passenger guidelines, airplanes themselves underwent major overhauls: cockpit doors now are fortified, and many airlines dropped first-class curtains. Pilots can now apply to carry a gun while a flight is in progression.
This led some Americans to believe that Muslim people should not be trusted. This is where the term ‘’ Islamophobia ‘’ came into play. Islamophobia , the dislike against Islam or Muslims , made it harder for Muslims to merge into American society. An example of discrimination towards Muslims were when women’s hijabs were rudely ripped off their heads. Also when Muslims speak in their language , some people become overly cautious and very defensive. You can see these offensives caused dramatic changes within airports. Before 9/11 airport security was very minimal and less strict than it is in modern day society. Proof of this was having the ability to possess a blade up to 4in on a plane , which goes to show that the metal detectors were of low quality. In comparison to today’s airport standards , we are more advanced now than we were in 2001. Extra safety measures have been taken because of what 9/11 has demonstrated on our lack of security. Agencies like TSA , Transportation Security Administration , had began to regulate on what people could and could not bring into the airport. Items like liquids or anything that can be used as a weapon are automatically confiscated.
Before getting on the plane, passengers were required to take their shoes off to check for any “shoe bombs.” You also couldn't bring any liquids. Security measures on immigration were also increased. The Homeland Security Act, Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002 changed immigration policies drastically about a year after 9/11. The First Version of The Patriot Act was introduced in order to intercept and obstruct terrorism. (American Civil Liberties Union). Passports and visas were extremely hard to come by. If they were able to come to the U.S. there were eyes and ears on them at all times. (International Business Times). Less than two months after 9/11, President George W. Bush signed the Patriot Act, which was extended in 2011 by President Barack Obama. Further, the federal government expanded the ability of the National Security Agency (NSA) to collect data on U.S. citizens, foreign nationals and governments. The extent of that expansion did not become publicly known, however, until 2013 when Edward Snowden revealed the extensive scope of the NSA's domestic spying. (International Business Times). Even tourism had to step up the security. Tourists travel from all over the world to come to the U.S. That includes people from the Middle East who were the ones who attacked the towers in the first place. They couldn't afford to have another slip up even in something as appealing and fun as
On September 11, 2001, the great nation of America faced one of its most problematic issues in its history. At the time, the events that occurred on 9/11 were so catastrophic that immediate action was taken by our former president, George W. Bush. Worried about the repercussions towards the well being and state of minds of the people of his nation, he addressed the entire nation in an attempt to assure everyone that America still remains strong and resilient, and most importantly functioning. George Bush was called upon to address the nation, America was currently suffering loss, experiencing fear, and despair. Bush’s objective was to reassure Americans to feel comforted in such dark times. He relates to his audience as he identifies them as innocent victims.Bush ultimately had to convince America, and other nations, of the logic behind the actions he claims and the responsibilities he takes on as leader of our country. The former president also evokes certain emotions from the viewers in order to gain their trust. Bush ultimately utilized key concepts such as ethos and pathos, but only to an extent.
The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2011 prompted the world to reevaluate and drastically modify airport and airline security. “Four targets had been chosen, all iconic American buildings that would send a clear message of the depth of their hatred for the United States. All four planes crashed, killing all on board—terrorists, crew members, and passengers, along with hundreds who were killed inside the structures, on the ground, and the men and women who ran into collapsing buildings in an effort to try and save others” (Smutz 1). As Jason Villemez said “the decade after the 9/11 attacks reshaped many facets of life in America” (Villemez 1). Before the attacks, people did not think that large scale hostility towards innocent people in
The September 11th attacks have had a profound effect on American history. Often referred to as “9/11”, these attacks were comprised of a group of organized terrorists known as Al-Qaeda. This extreme Islamic group assaulted several landmarks in New York City, Washington D.C, and the state of Pennsylvania. In New York City, two airliner jets were hijacked with passengers aboard and slammed into the World Trade Center. “The next attack resulted in a plane colliding into the Pentagon, government building; the last attack was in Pennsylvania when a plane crashed into a field. In total, 3,000 people died on September 11th, 2001” (History.com Staff). The September 11th-attacks have affected airport security by the new training of flight attendants, the formation of the Transportation Security Administration and new technical advances to keep up with increased terror threats.
