The Effect of Brain-Based Research on the Needs of Citizens Within the Education System

The brain is vulnerable at a young age. An important concept is that children between the ages of two and eleven go through significant learning experiences. In order for a child to grow into a healthy teenager, they must have a positive young education. Children in this young age group need a rich learning environment, and they need to be able to make connections between new concepts and prior knowledge. These students also need to actively learn while using various intelligences. Educators should provide multisensory environments for their students to help improve connections between neurons as the learning process continues. Once a teenager’s brain is fully developed, their seemingly reckless behavior and decision making will improve, and it will be easily for them to interact with adults. In the present time, teenagers need to develop strong relationships with other people and be able to relate to a variety of people within their community. In some places, the education system has tried to adapt in order to benefit the behavior of teenagers. For example, studies have shown that many teenagers only get seven and a half hours of sleep when they really should be getting over nine hours of sleep per night. When students are tired, it affects their ability to learn, effects their ability to remember past information, and affects their ability to retain new school material. Some schools have responded to this sleep issue by changing the school starting time to a later time in the morning. For example a school that started at 7 A.M would change to start at 8:30 A.M, in order to give students extra time to sleep. This would improve the awareness and learning ability of students early in the morning, and insure that no school time is wasted. The American education system in general, has not made a significant effort to help students, based on what brain research has theorized.
