The era of digitalization considered the data as an important information asset that is required to be safeguarded and stored in an effective manner to maintain the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information (Conklin, White, Williams, Davis & Cothren, 2012). The effective managing of data helps in accessing the accurate information at right time for organizational decision making purposes to achieve the long term business goals (Conklin et al., 2012). New innovations in the field of technology are used for carrying out research that resulted in entirely new categories of data in boundlessly growing amounts (Strasser, 2014). It is also needed to process the data effectively, make it easy access to primary data, to ensure accuracy of information and to verify the data is adhere to the standards (Fisheries and Aquaculture Department, n.d.). Data management resulted in saving time and resources in long term (Boston University, n.d.).
Data managers are responsible for carrying out the data management. They could range from researchers, graduate students, research assistants, information technology experts and research librarians. These data managers are accountable for the dataset throughout its life cycle to guarantee its functionality and proficiency for reusing the information during and after a given research project is finished (Texas A & M University, 2015).
History and evolution of data management The data management have been evolved over the years in well-defined phases. These phases are shown in figure 1. Figure 1.
