Some of these animals are subjects for medical research purposes, while others are used out of pure curiosity and to test different products. Majority of these animals are used in painful experiments and are left in agony. While many of them die, a few animals survive, but these unfortunate ones wish they could be put out of their misery as well. Although scientists have resources they could use to lower the pain each animal endures and even alternatives of their test subjects, millions of innocent creatures are still suffering. The fact that animals are still used when animal experimentation is avoidable and not necessary makes animal testing unethical.

According to The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique, published by William Russell and Rex Burch in 1959, there are 3 important principles when it comes to animal testing and research. These principles: reduction, refinement, and replacement are typically known as the “3 R’s.” Reduction is meant to minimize the number of animal used in experimental procedures, refinement aims to limit the animal’s exposure to pain, and replacement is designed to use non-animal options whenever possible. While the problem with animal testing is constantly brought to people’s attention, the number of animals used for research is still increasing to this day. It is questionable whether these principles sufficiently reflect the development in our knowledge about animals and their emotional capabilities, the interest of these animals, or the harm that corresponds. It also raises serious questions about the success rate of the predicted outcomes of animal testing.

As stated above, animal testing is an incredibly cruel practice. Scientists who use animals in experiments are free to do almost anything to animals in the name of science, because there are so few laws regulating how scientists are allowed to treat animals. According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), “Even animals who are covered by the law can be burned, shocked, poisoned, isolated, starved, forcibly restrained, addicted to drugs, and brain-damaged…” These animals lead terrible lives full of torture and loneliness, all for very little progress in any field.

Animal testing is used for scientific or commercial uses. Warm blooded animals , such as bunnies and mice, are used as subjects for makeup and household products. According to the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) it is legal for animal testing in the United States. Animal Testing should be banned unless the Animal has no more life in them.

For my senior paper I intend on writing about the effects animal testing has on the animals themselves and the reasons behind it being illegal. Animal testing is the use of living animals for experiments and/or to perform tests testing the safety of a human product. My thesis will be along the lines of “Inhumanly treating animals with unnecessary tests for the use of human products that often lack validity, due to the different ways animals and humans react to certain chemicals and supplements, should be outlawed.” I will talk about the types of testing, the products scientist use and whether or not it is an accurate way of determining if the items used are safe for human use.

One of these things that breathes life into this world are animals. Growing up I learned about animals in class, and grew an interest for them. Their shape, their features, the different actions and skills that each animal has. Animals are all unique in their own way. But, we tend to use these animals. The FDA does not require companies to perform tests on animals but if the cosmetic product contains chemicals that can be seen as toxins, testing becomes a necessity.
