The Effects of Russian Culture on Military Operations in That Region
Introduction
Understanding a country’s culture as it pertains to military operations is highly important in the modern era. Dictionary.com defines culture as “the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group”. There are many examples throughout history that show the negative consequences of ignoring or misunderstanding the cultures of other countries. The most recent example is our long sustained operations in the Middle East. We have operated in the Middle East for the better part of two and a half decades. Through our own successes and failures, it is obvious how important cultural awareness can be. The mistakes we have made have created more animosity towards our military and our country in general. Over the last decade, our government has worked continuously to understand and teach those lessons to our service members. Through those efforts, we have been able to win over many of the hearts and minds that we lost during the early part of the 1990’s and 2000’s. Continuing these practices in the future, with countries such as Russia, will allow us to overcome many of the mistakes and problems we have encountered in the past.
This paper is the culmination of my own personal thoughts and in no way reflects any official views or opinions of the United States government. As you move from topic to topic, I hope you begin to understand how important it is to know a
The evening news is ripe with controversial legislation, policy and debate from the lawmakers of the United States. Some of the most interesting headlines in recent history discuss the huge battles on labor laws in Wisconsin and Iowa, the anticipation of a Republican front runner for the upcoming Presidential elections, and discussion of our nation’s ability to understand and predict future happenings in Libya, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. Any of these topics could spark a heated conversation in any coffee house or roadside diner in this country but perhaps there is no issue which stays on the forefront, which riles testy tempers, and which needs to be discussed so much as this country’s policies on
The beliefs, values, and customs that are associated with the armed forces has cultivated into a unique culture within the military community (Hall, 2016, p. 41). In essence, a sub-culture has been established that is distinctly different from the culture of the United States. Thus, those that enter military service resign themselves to the fact that the military lifestyle is a departure from the civilian lifestyle and therefore, will differ from society as a whole. The military itself is rigidly structured, an aspect that essential not just to the military’s purpose, but to its continued existence. Thus, personnel, and by extension their families, are required to not only adhere to the many rules and regulations, but embrace them as well (Hall, 2016). Honor is a central tenet within the armed services and is ingrained within the culture (Hall, 2016). As such, the military mission has created a culture that champions having “the right stuff”, so to speak, and encourages the suppression of feelings and emotions (Hall, 2016, p. 11). Moreover, this warrior society embraces secrecy, stoicism, and denial, as these concepts are viewed as essential ingredients to the success of the self,
The United States faces serious issues surrounding current immigration policy. The situation produces debates throughout the country and a further divided congress, a scared nation, and scattered troops. Solutions have been presented in the form of very big walls, complex tracking systems, and overly simplified exportation of illegal aliens. However, no real steps of action have been agreed upon to rectify the situation. The US boast in its diversity; stemming from immigrants seeking recovery and opportunity. In the past, the nation thrived under the minds and views of many different peoples and cultures. The US people and government gradually showed themselves to be a dominant international force in the global community. Because of the melting pot of backgrounds, innovation thrived in the medical, science, mathematical, and engineering fields. Policy in the last 50 years naturally migrated towards the progressive attitude of nation, affected by the large population of immigrants, but the attitude changed detrimentally and dramatically after the attacks on 9/11. Based on fear and anxiety, many immigration policies were changed to protect citizens from reliving such a catastrophic event once again. The AIC, American Immigration Council, summarizes the purpose of Immigration law as “the reunification of families, admitting immigrants with skills that are valuable to the U.S. economy, protecting refugees, and promoting diversity.” (How the United)
This study is an attempt to explore the possibility of not deporting illegal immigrants because it benefits the United States economy in many aspects. Millions of illegal immigrants who live in the United State of America without any documents live in fear and feel that they will be deported back soon for not having a legal document. Illegal immigration has become a widely debated issue in recent years, especially among the some U.S Presidents and Presidential candidates. As the influx of illegal immigrants is growing every day in America, some people claim that no one should be allowed to live in America unless they have legal documents because they believe illegal immigrants have taken their jobs,
The main objective of the author is to have open and honest debate of immigration policy in the United States. It is not that there is not an immigration policy. The author presented two points of view: for immigration and for restricted immigration. For a true democracy, policies are formulated, adopted, implemented and evaluated. In the evaluation phase, challenges are made as to the effectiveness of a “living” policy. All government’s action or inaction, affects the people governed, and immigration is no exception. In fact, it directly affects all citizens. The conflicts that immigration draws are a good one. It tests the pulse of how persons think and what they believe, thoughts and beliefs, which can and do change with time, based on situations and circumstances. The issues surrounding immigration are many, most being centered on legal immigration, illegal immigration, national security, and labor and economics, which forms part of the immigration reform agenda. The issue of immigration is not new nor is there a panacea for resulting problems now and in the future.
For example, the title of the novel itself Culture as a Weapon demonstrates the negative view that Thompson holds. By having culture being compared to that of a weapon, it shows how political leaders manipulate the meaning of what culture is and use it to their own advantage. Due to the fact that when we hear the term weapon, we typically think of some object that is being used to gain advantage over someone or something else. Another example that demonstrates Nato Thompsons distaste towards the manipulation of values in the military, is when he states, “ - we have much to learn in the military’s active interest in cultural approaches to counterinsurgency” (Thompson, 126). By Thompson us of the phrase ‘we have much to learn’ he is implying that the approach they were trying to make was not successful in his mind because if it he viewed it as being successful he would not have made have let it imply that there was any need for improvement.
In his work “The Illusion of Unity in Cold War Culture,” Alan Brinkley seeks to analyze the varying views of culture in the Cold War era. To start, he presents the views of scholars from the Cold War era, who said that class boundaries were disappearing and social problems were being solved. These scholars claim that significant cultural changes, ones that were said to unify all classes, came from the postwar economic growth; this theory is known as “consensus ideology.” Consensus ideology saw America being freed from its social problems because there is no fight for materialistic goods, in turn, creating fear of going back to a place where this conflict exists. The discussion of consensus ideology is an interesting idea, but I feel the
Creating a culturally competent army is not about adding one more technical unit called “human terrain system” to deal with a culture. Culture is not reducible to a governmental unit in the same way as logistics, mechanics, weaponry, prisons, and so forth. Nevertheless, this is how the army and its HTS program look at a culture. Rather a culturally competent military implies a new type of soldier who comprehends that power and legitimacy are not only reliant on weapons. Those militaries as well would requisite to realize that Iraq is not neatly separated into good people, and bad people and that cultural thoughtfulness is more than a public relations exercise. Passing this to the army will encompass much more than the random roving anthropologist reporting to a the military
With the advancements of technology, conventional warfare is at a constant change. A country is faced with two options, adapt or meet defeat. One military branch at is shaping the future of geography and political points of interest is Air Defense. Qatar, a country not well known to most Americans, but in fact has been a valued partner and alliance member for over 40 years. Qatar currently hosts the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) Forward Headquarters and is a major supporter for U.S. Air Defense operations (“U.S. Relations With Qatar,” 2014). Leaders must understand an alliance’s culture as it provides insight on how to conduct interactions. What works for one culture doesn’t always work for another. To help build relationships
Misinterpretation, lack of knowledge, and several other reasons cultural awareness has been an Achilles heel for United States military in conflict over many decades. A “Heart and Mind” phrase was use by British General Gerald Templer in February 1952. This was the first time the phrase used in the context of counter-insurgency warfare. Emotional and intellectual appeals to sway supporter to prevail not by the use of superior force but through use of cultural awareness going into a conflict is a powerful strategy of counter-insurgency. My intent with this paper is to provide an understanding of Pakistan culture with the desire of bringing cultural awareness to United States Army and show how the ultimate victory will depend upon the
Are you worried about being slaughtered by the Russian military? Well stop worrying, because Russia's military is not big enough or strong enough to attack the U.S. Russia's military has been recently growing, but it is not capable of hurting the U.S. The U.S.'s military is stronger than Russia's, so there is no need to worry about possible attacks from Russia.
In 2015, Russian intelligence operatives launched numerous cyber-attacks that seemed to target the United States Democratic National Committee (DNC) and its members. The attacks gathered information about DNC members and released the information in a strategic effort to influence battle ground states and undermine Democratic candidate’s credibility. This was done in an effort to sway public opinion and did not directly alter votes at electronic voting booths. According to the Atlantic, no other foreign power has ever attempted to undermine U.S. democratic processes in this manner. If that is the case, how can Russia’s actions be explained? International relations has several theories which attempt to explain the international political
Americans are quick to judge the news they hear from major political figures. Americans will form an opinion based on what message they derive from the figure’s words. Although information is coming from such a high figure of authority, American’s should always use their own judgement on the legitimacy and meaning of the information. Rather the information be of ill or good content, The figure could be twisting the truth for the interest of himself, his country, or the people. Furthermore, the information being delivered to Americans is structured and thought out accordingly, rather it be the truth or a lie, the information is designed to promote the wellbeing of the United State only if the intention of the politician is for the success
Further, the purpose of this article is to also discuss common flaws and misconceptions of the government, an entity that fails to recognize that in order for concepts of
