Physical abuse and bullying happen all the time in schools. It is a constant problem for teenagers and even pre-teens. Now that we have internet and social media popping up like popcorn, picking and cyberbullying is easier than ever. Social media, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc., have become known as the well-known pastime for teenagers today. What is “social media” anyway? From the internet, the definition of social media is “website and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking.” Media of course is supposed to be for fun and allow others to communicate with their friends and family, but there is also another side of it. The internet has two sides, good and evil. Technology has grown bigger than ever and that just helps with the bullying and makes it easier. With the beginning of the internet, also chat rooms have started. AOL instant messenger (AIM) enhanced chat rooms, which are online communication programs that allow teenagers to spend as long as they would like talking with one-on-one, talk to others in private or even have a public chat. That activity further progressed and allowed the young adults to create specific group chat rooms. This specific type of technology advancement allowed the youth to get together and select specific friends and people to talk about the news about other people or anything gossip. But, has social media been harming the minds of the new generations? Being in a world where social media is available to approximately everyone, many have been affected negatively by social media.

Instead of interacting with each other face to face adolescents are socializing through their phones (George, 2014). Social media plays an important role in the lives of teenagers and potentially young women. It can actually be a big influencer on their decisions being as it’s a place to express yourself in many ways even if those ways put off negative connotations to those around. More people are concerned with the number of likes or favorites they get rather than actual important or real world things. For a teen that struggles with self-esteem issues, it could be confusing to see a lot of “pretty” girls and not know why you don’t or can not look like them. Social media when used addictively has negative or harmful effects on young girls self-esteem.
