There are hazards all around us in our daily lives. Just to name a few, there are three issues that come to mind. These three are distracted driving, hazardous waste, and extreme weather. The less severe of these three would be extreme weather. Even though one would think that this issue would be very severe, but with this issue only happening a small percentage of the time, I consider it the lesser of the three issues. The second issue, which is more severe than the weather, would be hazardous waste. With things like household and industrial waste. The last and most severe is distracted driving. Starting with the less severe issue. We look at extreme weather being an issue to a very large community. There are so many types of weather …show more content…
Waste that is considered hazardous has properties that make it dangerous or harmful to people and/or the environment.
There are many sources that produce hazardous waste. Ranging from industrial processing waste to batteries. I can come in many forms such as liquids, solids, gases, or sludges. Now for waste to be considered hazardous, the waste has to be in a solid form first. There are two steps to identifying waste as hazardous. The first step in determining a material as a solid waste is to identify it. The second is to examine the waste to see whether it is excluded as a solid or hazardous waste by regulations. (Learn the Basics of Hazardous Waste/ USEPA. Web. 3 April 2017)
Once the waste is determined by a generator that it is in facts by definition a solid. It is then investigated to see whether the solid waste is a listed or characteristic hazard. In the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA), Congress mandated that the EPA must regulate hazardous waste disposal in the United States. (Hazardous Waste Disposal…..) Now there are two categories that hazardous waste is divided into. These are listed and characteristic. Characteristic waste refers only to hazardous materials that possess one or more of these harmful features: ignitability, reactivity, corrosivity and toxicity. (Hazardous Waste…web) Listed waste comes from non-specific
Through the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Congress directed EPA to regulate all aspects of hazardous waste. As a result, EPA developed strict regulations for the treatment, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste. States may implement stricter requirements than the Federal regulations as needed. Treatment and Disposal: Any process that changes the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics of a waste to minimize its threat to the environment. Storage: The temporary holding of waste before the waste is treated,
The implementation process of the RCRA has been a complex and controversial issue in the history of the EPA. It provide a complex problem because the EPA often dictates how hazardous wastes is identify and dispose of. For example, according to Sullivan, the author of Environmental Law Handbook recognizes the implementation process, the author writes “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) and states have implemented this mandate in extensive regulations issued under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976(RCRA) and the Hazardous and Solid Waste Amendments of 1984.”(Sullivan 147 2014). The EPA policy implementation concepts functioned as the basis for the hazard identification and waste control. This model challenges society to protect the environment by isolating contaminants from the environment while at the same time addressing difficult regulations of hazardous wastes under the RCRA. Since the enactment of the act, it had experienced challenges because the regulation did and received much attention as a result of the hazardous waste classification. The most vital challenge implementing of the RCRA is the policy that rigorously limits on land disposal of hazardous wastes. Moreover, existing hazardous waste regulations do not create robust incentives for disposing of hazardous waste. The author recognized this challenge when he
While lithium batteries are not specifically included or exempted in the hazardous waste regulations, these batteries have some characteristics of toxic hazardous wastes. The reason for the uncertainty regarding the toxic characteristics of lithium batteries is because they can be effectively disposed as non-hazardous waste by discharging them fully. When completely charged or partially discharged, lithium batteries can be regarded as reactive hazardous waste due to the considerable amounts of un-reacted lithium in the battery ("Product Sheet", 2007).
Identified wastes in the current processes using the seven wastes as a guide to what should be looked for. The question was asked, “Why did this waste occur?” and, “What can be done to prevent it?”.
can leak or spill into adjacent land and water.” (Steuer 2). Waste storage can emit chemicals
According to waste legislation business' must establish 'a system that ensures waste producers or those handling waste follow the waste hierarchy (i.e. prevention, reuse, recycling, recovery, disposal)' ( Surrey County Council, 2012) This forces business' to consider waste management throughout their infrastructure.
1. Identify the hazards in the case, which can be environmental, situational, human or ergonomic.
Our society uses a lot of materials considered hazardous. They are used in, or are the byproduct of, industrial processes, power plants, the medical and pharmaceutical industries, and fuels. Much of the land transport of hazardous materials is the job of the trucking industry.
Waste trafficking refers to the traffic of hazardous wastes through illegal transnational business that involves a variety of criminal groups such as private entities, corrupt government officials, and organized crime groups (Liddick 134). According to environment professor Don Liddick, "By the late twentieth century transnational organized criminals, corporate polluters, and corrupt public officials have discovered the means to profit from the traffic in household garbage, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), and even radioactive waste – illicit industries that rival the international drug trade in scope and profitability” (Liddick 134). Waste is considered hazardous if it is explosive, reactive, flammable, irritable, harmful, toxic, or corrosive. Hazardous waste includes oily substances, batteries, medical waste,
Poor and disabled populations are more likely to shelter in place instead of evacuating for storms (Miller, 2014). Some individuals stay by choice, but others may not have the means to leave. Unfortunately, there are severe health consequence, such as injury or death, for those who stay behind. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2017), flooding is the leading cause of severe weather related deaths. Further, over 50 percent of all flood-related casualties occur when a vehicle is driven into flood water (CDC, 2017). The next highest percentage of flood related casualties are caused by walking into or near flood waters. These types of deaths are completely preventable with proper public communication on flood safety (Revere, 2011). State agencies should improve communication of health risks from flooding, particularly for those who do not and

Such kind of waste emits radiations from tens to hundreds of years. These reactive radicals make the sand or the water contaminated. It is known as mixed waste. The mixture cause hazardous chemical reactions and leads to dangerous complications.
Hazardous waste and its proper disposal have become a major sociological problem today due to its capability of contaminating the area in which we live and its potential to be lethal to all living things. In order for the United States and the rest of the world to save itself from a potentially life threatening problem they must fix the causes which lead to the improper disposal of hazardous wastes and like materials. Some reasons that hazardous waste has become a problem in the United States today is due to the breakdown in enforcing laws for the proper disposal of such wastes, a lack of initiative on big companies behalf to spend money on proper disposal, and the ease of disposing of such wastes illegally.
Weather has a way of making people feel a certain way, by affecting their mood. Bright and sunny weather tends to make people happier, while dull and dreary weather brings about less appealing emotions, such as grumpiness, sadness, or fear. Tornado weather, especially in tornado alley, is a source of emotion. For many people living in tornado alley, tornado season offers a mix of fear and excitement. However, for most, when the tornado is actually present, fear tends to take over and the excitement is lost. The tornado that occured on May 20th, 2013 was a great example of how a tornado can turn from exhilirating to terrifying.
Special hazardous USEPA pollutants include wastes, medical wastes, military wastes and the radioactive releases. The hazardous waste can be either a designated waste or a characteristic waste. A characteristic waste is named so because it exhibits one of the properties such as corrosiveness, reactivity, ignitability or radioactivity. A designated waste is the waste that is in the list of the USEPA.
