How often does one know where the meat they are consuming is from? There are different factories all over the world that create meat and sell are for less than someone who were to have raised it on a farm. In The Ethical Epicure; Another Look at Meat by Laurel Gladden, he discusses that farmland is not the priority choice when purchasing meat and that they are being outsourced because it is cheaper. He also points out different ways to choose what meat to eat if people decide becoming vegetarian was not for them. BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs, not tofu and vegetables. The common ground that the author speaks on is that not everyone is going to just stop eating meat. At one point the author references Tara Austen-Weaver’s book, The Butcher and the Vegetarian: One Woman’s Romp through World of Men, Meat, and Moral Crisis, ‘No one wants to be told that the American dream is over and we’re all going to have to eat lentils now.’” (para 6). Which, Gladden is referring to everyone is going to eat meat no matter what. That going vegetarian is not an option. So he gives alternatives to eating meat and goes into detail about what types to purchase. So that all parties are satisfied. The transition from the tone where the author is writing about being vegetarian to where it is ok to eat meat, just be careful where it is from is in paragraph 4. There are chefs that “prepared a variety of dishes using beef, pork, and lamb from local suppliers Pecos Valley Grassfed Beef and Talus Wind Ranch as well as Heritage Meats USA, a national organization dedicated to promoting ‘genetic diversity, small family farms, and a fully traceable food supply’ and ‘to making sustainably produced heritage foods available to all Americans’”. Having more sustainable products in the world would be great because then the world would not have to worry about endangered animals. He ends his article with “to eat or not to eat meat is a personal decision” (para 11) so he is wanting to make it clear that the reader knows that he is not wanting to make the decision for him. However, he brings up a lot of points that he hopes the reader will take into consideration. The intended effect of this article is for the reader to make better choices when choosing to eat meat, or even going vegetarian altogether.
