In essence, MySpace, while an excellent start, ultimately did not meet the expectations of its users. Nevertheless, its demise has led to immense improvement in the next generation networks.

A social website called “My Space” sparked the social site revolution almost ten years ago, and connected millions of people around the world through the internet. Since My Space other popular social sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have made an incredible explosion on to the growing social scene.
With technology growing at an exponential rate it has become nearly impossible to escape the digital era. The internet has been around for over two decades, the first website was launched in 1991(Schroeder). Within these years there have been millions of website creations, all with a slightly different intended purpose or audience. One of the biggest and expansive subgroups of the internet is social networking. Social Networking is defined as, “Forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content,” (Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary). Social networking has taken over the world, but ?
Social media is a form of electronic communication which facilitates interaction based on certain interests and characteristics. The social networking sites are gaining a lot of popularity these days with almost all of the educated youth using one or the other such site. Thousands of people join social media networking sites to keep in connection with their friends and family members, According to Boyd and Ellison "people use social media sites such as Face book, Twitter, MySpace to create and sustain relationship with others"(1). Moreover, social networking sites are created to allow individual to communicate with others who share similar interests, information and friends. Most social network sites are web based and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as e-mail and instant messaging services. Social media is a popular trend today, especially among students.
Our generation has seen a variety of social media sites come and go during our time on this small planet. Facebook has withstood the sands of time with constant innovation that began with proper strategic implementation in having a sustainable competitive advantage among all other competitors. This case reiterates the importance of having a strong strategic plan because it can be the deciding factor of the overall health of the company. Examples were given on how Myspace had all the potential in the world by being a social web-based median where users can find hot topics regarding entertainment and music. Unfortunately, as years came and went so did Myspace users to a more appealing and clean-cut site, Facebook. Facebook became the largest social media site on the planet in the span of eight years. A remarkable task, since it was developed by a young, intelligent programmer in his Harvard University dorm room as a way to connect friends with each other. Mark Zuckerberg was the 19-year-old entrepreneur that set out to connect users through relationship management rather than taking the Myspace “portal strategy” route. By focusing on relationship management and introducing the like button, advertisers began paying for the data collection Facebook was able to gather from their enormous user base regarding particular interests. Facebook supplied advertisers with a plethora of user information, while being able to keep their social site clean and create an environment where
These days, it is virtually social suicide not to have a Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat account. Nevertheless while social networking sites provide many opportunities and means for communicating, users may not realize that is posted today can come back to haunt them tomorrow. What has written on the web lasts forever. It is equally as dangerous to stay on social media as it is to leave, so we are free to decide how we want to improve our online experience.
Facebook, a social networking website, has changed the way people communicate with each other. A social networking website is an online platform that allows users to create a public profile and interact with other users on the website. Facebook has even changed our most personal and private conversations and how they are conducted around the world. Since the internet’s birth in 1983, this trend of online communication has been growing. Created in 2004, now registered with more than one billion participants, Facebook’s user numbers surpass even the top four social networking websites combined. According to Wikipedia statistics, Instagram has 300 million registered users, LinkedIn has 200 million users, Classmates.com has 50 million users, and Flickr has 32 million registered users. To be further convinced of the claim that Facebook indeed changes the way we communicate, you would only need to create your own Facebook account and start participating in their social networking experience. Technology and internet usage is fused into every aspect of our society including the style of communication. The launch of Facebook in 2006 also enabled other devices such as touch phones, interactive tablets, and even advanced cars with their own networking capabilities starting in 2007. Facebook is a multibillion-dollar company and is highly recognized for connecting more people than other networks. Facebook’s long-term success can be attributed to providing entertainment, world news, and
There has been a lot of discussions about whether social network sites are a past craze or here to stay. In this essay, the concept of a social network site is narrower than that of social media, a social network can be defined as “ A dedicated website or other application which enables users to communicate with each other by posting information, comments, messages, images” (http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/social-network?q=social+network, no date). This means that the type of social network is independent from the type of media sharing websites, such as YouTube, and the type of Micro-blogging, such as Twitter. These social networks are often household names, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Belo. In fact, up to the second quarter of 2015, there were 1.49 billion monthly active users in Facebook (Statista, 2015). It’s clear that people like using social networking sites, interacting and sharing with other users which they can add as friends. Therefore, it is hard to say social networks are a passing fashion.
The last decade witnessed an explosion of social networks such as Myspace and Facebook, which added a new social dimension to the web.
Social networking sites continue to gain in users and popularity. The first social networking sites were created in the 1990’s (Edosomwan et al. 3). These sites included Six Degrees, BlackPlanet, and MoveOn (Edosomwan et al. 3). Some of these sites are still in existence. The most popular social networking site, Facebook, was launched in February 2004 (Edosomwan et al. 4). After 6 years Facebook was noted to have over 500 million active users (Edosomwan et al. 4). As of March 2015, Facebook had 1.4 billion active users (Statista). Social networking sites have changed the way we connect to each
