People fear how others will judge them for the way they act which results in locking them in their comfort zone forever. Once people fail, they fear to try it again because the uncertainty acts as a mental block which prevents them from trying to do it again. Fear can hinder individuals from their true potential. In the poem, “Before i got my eye put out” illustrates a self reflection of Emily Dickinson on reminiscing on the lost of her eyesight. Dickinson tries to remember what it was like having her eyesight and completely feels as if she is lost and had hit the very bottom. However, people who take the big leap and face their fears tend to experiment greater things in life as they experience more. These experiences allow for more exposure to unfamiliar ideas and as a result, they become more open minded. Personally, I have experienced something similar to this in volleyball. During my freshman year, I had always dreamed of becoming a starter. However, volleyball was different from a certain task that I needed to perfect. It was a sport where I found myself needing to face my fears of messing up to end up making mistakes and taking those mistakes and apply what I learn in different situations. In Emily Dickinson’s poem, “we Grow Accustomed to the Dark,” she expounds the idea how “the Bravest - grope a little - And sometimes hit a Tree Directly in the Forehead - But as they learn to see - Either the Darkness alters - Or something in the sight Adjust itself to Midnight - And Life steps almost straight” (Dickinson 13-20). This emphasizes that obstacles in life are the first concern when it comes to making a decision. Those obstacles should not fear or stop them from doing what they love to
