The First World War : The Great War

The following paper gives insights on various issues; Firstly, why the First World War started, its effects and lastly how and why America got involved in the First World War

The Great War, or World War I as it came to be known, dealt a devastating blow to the optimism and self-confidence of Western civilization (Foner 733). In fact, when war occurred in the year 1914, President Wilson proclaimed American neutrality. However, as in the years leading up to the War of 1812, naval warfare which was in Europe made its way into the United States (Foner 734). In addition to this, Britain declared a naval blockade of Germany and started to stop American merchant vessels (Foner 734). Moreover, Germany made the decision to commence submarine warfare on ships seen entering and leaving British ports. What is more, is that in May of 1915, the British liner Lusitania (which was transporting an excessive amount of weapons such as firearms) was sank by a German submarine off of the coast of Ireland, this resulted in the death of 1,198 passengers, 124 of which were Americans (Foner 734).

World war one was one the biggest wars in recorded history. It lasted from 1914-1918 and was a brutal conflict in Canadian history. More than 60,000 Canadians died in this war. When the First World War began in the year of 1914, some believe that it would last for a long time. Many young individuals in Canada and others saw this war as a privilege to travel, adventure, and great beauty. Some individuals were afraid that the conflict would be over before they could get into the battle. Many people signed up dreaming that they would have the honour of fighting for the British Empire, to which Canada belonged. The somewhat “Great War” was different in the dreamy vision than it was in reality. This war took the lives of more than 8 million

Wars have immensely contributed to human history for thousands of years, becoming highly destructive usually for the means of gain. The First World War, also known as ‘the Great War’ was a truly global war centred in Europe. The causes of one of the most destructive wars in human history are still debated to this day. Some historians have come up with a list of multiple causes of the war. However, experts have identified some of the primary causes of the war, including the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, militarism, alliances, imperialism and nationalism. The causes of the truly deadly war, sending ripples of shock throughout Europe and the world, can be summarised into four points, and the start of the war pinpointed to one bullet from a young Serbians gun.

World War I (WWI) brought unprecedented change to the world. Never before had the entire world engaged in such brutal conflict. World War I brought about great pain and sorrow for the whole world. Even countries who were not directly involved in front line combat bore the suffering of financial and social limitations that affected the entire world during this time.

World War One, or The Great War as it is sometimes known, significantly altered the course of history for all the countries involved. It ushered in previously unprecedented changes in American politics, economics, and society, through the passage of laws that blatantly violated constitutional rights, a redefinition of women’s role in the workforce and the promotion of agriculture) as well as a rise in radicalism and a new form of patriotism.

World War I changed the course of history, and in many ways the effects of this war are still being felt even to this day. It was one of the bloodiest events the world ever saw with over 31 million soldiers killed, wounded or disfigured. In Europe many of the Europeans believe that this war altered the makeup of war itself and called it by another name, the Great War. The war was not only fought between soldiers of the Allied forces and the Great Powers, but civilians were also beginning to be targeted to a large extent for the first time. Bombing of cities with the use of artillery and aircraft, the use of unrestricted submarine warfare to sink unarmed merchant or passenger ships, and the introduction of chemical weapons on a mass scale

Glenn Miller is an icon never to be forgotten. With his take on music, and traveling the world to different places, being an amazing influence to many young people got him far in his career of big band swing music. Art and music is also known as formal music, serious music, erudite music, or legitimate music (sometimes shortened to legit music) —is an umbrella-term used to refer to musical traditions implying advanced structural and theoretical considerations and a written musical tradition. World War I, also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a global war centered in Europe that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. World War II, also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, though related conflicts began earlier. Alton Glenn Miller was an American big band musician, arranger, composer, and bandleader in the swing era. He was the best-selling recording artist from 1939 to 1943, leading one of the best known big bands. I would put the thesis here - something like - Glenn Miller’s exploration into big band sound, coupled with swing music, created a soundtrack for a generation that expanded over borders resulting in a cultural exchange that impacted music for decades to come (or something similar to this) - somehow, you have to tie Glenn Miller, as the father of big band, as both exploring new music, cultural exchange - sharing his music with other cultures. World War I was usually suggested to as "The Great War". The war began sometime in 1914 and lasted four years, ending in 1918. America endorsed, in this era, a great amount of devastation. Throughout those four years alone approximately nine million casualties occurred and in addition millions more were mutilated, grief-stricken, handicapped, or traumatized. World War I is referred to by some, the first catastrophe, man-made, of the twentieth century. Many historians continue to contemplate the essential causes of World War I. There are multiple factors that impacted the war. The causes and effects of the war altered the lives of numerous people. Several of the effects of the battle are still apparent in today.

World War 1 also known as The Great War started for a number of explanations; discrimination and imperialism, militarism nationalism, and alliance. According to the World of information imperialism is the policy which is expanding the country’s power and acquiring new land or countries by force. Militarism is when a country wants to preserve the strongest and most defensive military strength. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Ottoman Empire where central powers of WW1 but the allied powers where France, England, Russia, and the United States. Many of these countries joined World War 1 because of Alliances, where they had a treaty with that country or countries that in a challenging times they would be there to help in any way possible even if it meant they are set in the middle of a world warfare.

World war one also known as the great war had some awful events and lots of people died. The amount of propaganda used to recruit people to join the war was incredible. There were many "great" battles during this four-year war, but the downside of some many battles means so many deaths. The invention of airborne weapons to use in the war was a big step up in weapons and warfare. Propaganda used to recruit men to join the army.

World War One is considered to be one of the most important events in modern world history. Lasting four years and resulting in large numbers of casualties, the war represented a "total war" in which nations devoted all of the resources at their disposal to the war effort. Before this time, wars were fought by trained armies sent to fight on a battlefield, and had little impact on the lives of civilians not involved in the fighting. However, during World War One, governments controlled the economy, shifting the focus of industry from consumer goods production to the production of goods that would support the war. All available civilians were put to work either directly in the fighting, or in support of war activities on the home front. Civilians played a critical role in World War One through their expression of patriotism and support of government programs, through their purchase of war bonds, and through the lifestyle changes they made in support of war related activities.

The alliance system, imperialism, arms race, and military plans created a perfect situation for a war in Europe, which would eventually become the Great War. With Germany, Great Britain, France, and Russia being the top powers in Europe, these countries would be the front runners in the discussion of the topics mentioned above and how their participation in those topics eventually led to the Great War. The order of topics to discuss that would ultimately lead to the Great War would be Imperialism being the spark that would lead to an arms race, which would then lead to an alliance system, with military plans truly making the war a world war.

World War One, also known as the First Word War, The Great War and The War To End All Wars took place in Europe from 1914 to 1918. Being a soldier In World War One would have been one of the most dangerous, yet exciting things that a man could have ever done. The war would have put a tremendous amount of physical demands on soldiers, and yet they had to keep fighting even though deep down they knew that they were only small when compared to the grand scheme of war. World War One consisted of three fronts. The Western Front was trench warfare and it was fought on the boards of France. The Eastern Front was fought on the boarder of Russia, this was a war of movement. Gallipoli was on the Dardanelles peninsula and in the foothills of Ottoman Empire now known as Turkey.

World War I, also known as the Great War, was one of the most important and traumatic war in history. It left many countries in devastation and chaos. Countries involved in the war, like Europe and America promised to prevent any other future world war because of the millions lives taken and the destruction caused to the world in the previous war. However, peace was not enjoyed for long and after two decades, the Second World War began from the issues that were left unresolved from the previous conflict. There was not one specific factor that started World War II, but many causes of which two of those were the economic instability of Germany and the resentment of Italy and Japan over the Versailles Treaty that was put forth after World War I. World War II was the second most destructive and disturbing war in history that lasted for six years and resulted in tremendous casualties.
