The Fugitive Conventions

This film is a black and white film and the lighting is more towards dim effect which terrified the audience. Music plays the biggest effect in the film. Bernard Hermann’s theme is used for this film because it uses mostly high-pitched string instrument notes so the suspense and horror mood can be formed to the audience.

The South was a complete mess after the Civil War. The early part of the 20th century brought many changes for African Americans. There was a difficult challenge of helping newly free African American slaves assimilate among their white counterparts. They suffered from crop failures, economic hardships, and the early failures of Reconstruction in the south. So as result many Southern African Americans migrated to northern cities in search of employment and a chance at a better life. Our Constitutional Convention was affected by many things prior to the event. Many discussions were arranged in order to set up alliances and partnerships. As a Southern Plantation owner, my group had many preliminary discussions and we formed an agreement with the Bankers, Workers, and the Farmers. These discussions were necessary because my group needed to form agreements and get others to vote for our cause and this could only be arranged if we held preliminary discussions, which we did. There are many lessons to be taught when it comes to preliminary discussions. Before discussing any topics, you need to know who to confer with. Say you need to discuss about slavery, you wouldn’t talk to the slaves, your best option would to be to talk to the farmers. There are various elements that contribute to the significance of a film. Cinematography, is one important element in which the camera is used to capture visual images through a number of other controllable elements such as; camera lens, framing, scale, movement etc. Editing is another fundamental component of film studies in which different shots are put together in a coherent sequence in order to make meaning of a film.

According to Richard Maltby (2003) commercial aesthetic is used to describe Hollywood’s aesthetics system, driven as it is by the existence of entertainment as a commercial commodity. From this perspective, Hollywood’s most profound significance lies in its ability to turn pleasure into a product we can buy. An understanding of Hollywood’s commercial aesthetic requires a consideration of both the formal conventions of Hollywood movies and the external social and cultural pressures that regulate movies as products of a system of mass production and distribution (pp. 580-581). Each Hollywood movie is best implicated as an 'opportunist ' congregation of unalike 'elements ' as reasoned out by Maltby. In order to best mollify the (perceived) market-place at a particular point in time these rudiments are transported together by producers and production companies.

The genre of the movie is crime, drama and thriller. This can be seen because there are two FBI agents trying to solve a crime; the murder of the civil rights workers. There are a lot of spooky scenes, where the viewer can get scared and be offended.

There are many different elements of film that filmmakers can utilize to make a film. Direction, storyline, cinematography, mise en scene, as well as point of view and tone can all lend a hand in making a film great. One might say that the most important aspect of a film is the script. Others might argue the actors are the most important part. However, an impressive balance of all of the different elements of film are what can elevate a film to greatness. That is why the best film viewed this semester is Night of the Living Dead.

     Films that are classified as being in the film noir genre all share some basic characteristics. There is generally a voice-over throughout the film in order to guide the audience's perceptions. These movies also involve a crime and a detective who is trying to figure out the truth in the situation. This detective usually encounters a femme fatale who seduces him. However, the most distinctive feature of the film noir genre is the abundance of darkness.

David Bordwell wrote his article ‘The Art Cinema as a Mode of Film’ in an effort to convey the main idea that “art cinema” can be considered as a distinct mode of film practice, through its definite historical existence alongside other cinematic modes, set of formal conventions, and implicit viewing procedures. Rather than searching for the source of the art, or what drives the art in film, Bordwell compares art cinema to the classical narrative cinema, and highlights the differences in narrative structure. Bordwell makes the assumption that it defined itself against the classical narrative mode; especially with the way it deals with space, time, and the cause and effect link of events.
