In The Giver, everyone is equal. There is only equality. If you were to compare the society of The Giver to our own society, there is a big difference. Their society is almost perfect there is no poverty or wars. Our society is very far from perfect. In The Giver, there is freedom, but not freedom of choice. This is the difference between our society and theirs. In The Giver, people are equal, there is no discrimination of any kind; in our society we have discrimination of all sorts like racism, sexism, and ageism. As Rosa Parks had once said “Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.” Racism has been going on for what seems like forever. Rosa Parks had said these words over 50 years ago. 50 years is a long time and yet people are still racist. It has seemed to define America’s history for better or for worse. Lois Lowry has seemed to imagine a world without slavery. Something else that is really important is Sexism. “A gender-equal society would be one where the word 'gender' does not exist:where everyone can be themselves.”-Gloria Steinem. Men and women are equals. One issue facing our society is fair pay. The fair pay for women well it …show more content…
Men much less because men gain power as they get older. Women lose power as they get older. Men are seen as gaining experience and being distinguished. Sons look forward to replacing their fathers.”- Gloria Steinem. Another issue facing our society is ageism. Some people when they hear the word ageism, they think of unemployment. Some people will hire a younger person than an old person just because they are old. Some of these people could have fought for our country. In The Giver, Lois Lowry has a place for the old called the house of old. Also in her book the young don’t insult the old or ever talk back. Another issue facing our society is religious
Today, racism still remains a prevalent issue that has constantly reared its ugly head. While bringing awareness towards racism has improved, we are still being faced with a gruesome reality that racism is still very much alive. Instead of Jim Crow laws and slavery, racism has transformed itself into microaggressions, police brutality, racial profiling, and mass incarceration of people of color (especially black men). When one talks about racism, most of our opinions are based on what happens in America; from 400 years ago until now, we find ourselves believing that racism in America has improved greatly. And we have improved, compared to the times before and after the Civil War. However, as we progress forward, we move back fifty years. Some of us in society refuse to acknowledge the arising problems that have to do with racism while others become apart of the problem. As a society, we are taught about white culture, eurocentric beauty standards, and brought up with subconscious racist mindsets that will take a lifetime to unlearn, and have for centuries, kept people of color oppressed. We are brought up with subtelities of racism, such as a child seeing their white mom lock the car door in fear when a black person walks past, or seeing their white dad make a disgusted look at a hispanic for no reason at all. It is things like this that are ingrained in our brains; racial stereotypes that we cannot help but think about each race.
Our society has a really different way of living from The Giver’s society. For example, our society allows two kids. We can have as many kids as we want. We are not all the same we are all different. In The Giver the dwellings are all the same, the color is all the same, and how they dress and act are all the same at each age. In our world, we are free to dress differently, live different and be unique.
In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas’s community is oblivious to lf their world is a Dystopia or a Utopia. The community is a Dystopia. According to the passage “Utopias and Dystopias”,a Dystopia is a Utopia which things have gone wrong. An Utopian society is a place we can only dream about. Jonas community is no dream they are completely controlled. Jonas society is ruled by the Chief Elder. The Giver describes three different ideals including lack of knowledge, sameness, and complete control.
While modern day society and the novel The Giver are different, they have a few things that are the same. For instance, they both have laws and both has a “boss”. In addition, they both have vehicles, and both have the same age groups, like them you turn from eleven to twelve, you are considered twelve years old. They both also have a House of Committee. In addition to, in their society they have babies that start by crawling, then walking, as well as we do in our modern day society.
“One reason people resist change is because they focus on what they have to give up instead of what they have to gain” - Rick Godwin
Life would change drastically if we didn’t have books. In The Giver, Jonas has only seen three books. He has never seen another book in his life until he walks into the Receiver's room. It got me thinking. If there were no books in our world, I would be distraught. I would miss all books, but there are three books that I would miss dearly.
Imagine your mind changes in seconds to not having feelings to feeling what real life is. A feeling that is filled with family, life, and emotion. Well, in the novel The Giver, written by Lois Lowry, Life was gone and the expert Chief elders, who watched after the community, shut out emotion, love, pain, and sadness. Jonas, the main character, who lives in a utopian society and is chosen to be the receiver of memory which is the job to hold all the memories of the past and is trained by The Giver. In his training he discovers that there is more to life than the one he is living in now. In the novel we learn the theme is that a life without emotion, love, and pain is no life worth living.

Throughout the Bible there are countless parables and lessons that emphasize the importance of showing kindness and generosity to those in ones community. From the parable of The Good Samaritan to the story of The Unsuspecting Giver, charity and service are shown as some of the most prominent themes in the Bible. It seems that the Bible has such a strong emphasis on showing kindness to others because it is the “right” or “just” thing to do. This idea is very similar to the Jewish concept of Tzedakah which translates in English to “justice.” In the Jewish tradition, however, the term Tzedakah has become synonymous with charity. In the Jewish tradition, however, Tzedakah refers to the religious obligation to helping others and doing what is right while charity is more of an act of spontaneous kindness. The lessons
In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas grows up in a community of sameness, but soon later Jonas’s innocence is lost. As the Receiver of Memory, Jonas gets introduced to both pleasure and true pain. First, Jonas gets the memory of warfare and raw pain, which proves to be very painful and nothing Jonas has ever experienced. Next, the Giver gives Jonas the memory of love, which is a totally new concept to Jonas. Lastly, Jonas is shocked at the true meaning and act of release, this makes Jonas want to change the way things are run in the community. Jonas gets these memories as the Receiver of Memory but it soon makes him lose his innocence and see the world as it really is.
“Racism is still with us. But it is up to us to prepare our children for what they have to meet, and, hopefully, we shall overcome.”, promised Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks. The past, present, and the future of racism was something we thought could finally hopefully overcome. Sadly, it is still going on in today’s society. In the past and present racism was a huge issue in the Supreme Court, showed in all three pieces, “Plessy v Ferguson”, “Brown v Board Transcript”, and “Supreme Court Upholds Affirmative Action Program at University of Texas”. Over the years it went from ruling against race, for race, and then back against race and discrimination.
As the sled reached it’s destination Jonas found himself looking down at Gabe, he felt weak. Nauseated, the last thing he saw was the snow filled cotton balls in the sky. Gabriel was still conscious, however he was beginning to have frostbite on three of his fingers and all of his toes. He whimpered in pain waiting on someone to soothe it and bring him peace. The snowfall forcefully entered Jonas’s jacket suddenly waking him up. Gabrielle was sitting next to him continuously screaming. Jonas instinctively picked up gabe and tried to find the problem. Looking all over Gabe, Jonas finally went to his hands realizing the issue. Jonas gave Gabe his socks and took his toboggan off and wrapped it around his hands. Gabe refused at first then
In this paper, I will be discussing the social issue of gender inequality between men and women. Gender inequality is a problem that is widely recognized and affects men and women alike. Gender inequality affects employment, earnings, how individuals are viewed, etc. This issue is one that needs to be resolved so women, and men, can make progress toward a gender-neutral society. A way for us to resolve this issue is to change our perceptions of men and women in society.
Gender inequality has been a major problem in the United States for many years. Even though laws have been passed and women have fought for the rights they own today, it has still been a big issue. Gender inequality is everywhere. For example, we see this in presidential elections, businesses, schools, and even in sports. Over the years women have been able to create changes and more women have been able to become dentist, lawyers, physicians, and many more. Women are capable of being able to do things that men can do. Obviously, women won’t be able to do it exactly like men, but they can still do it to a certain extent. Today, we still see it happen in many situations even if something we don’t realize it is happening.
