Education is important and should be available for everyone. Because of that, I strongly disagree that the government prohibit foreign students from attending college. One reason I maintain this position is that a lot of specialists that work in the US for example in technology are from other countries. In the article “International students in the US”, Project Atlas presents convincing data regarding the positive consequence of foreign students. For example, 20% of the college students that study engineering and graduate are foreign. Proponents of prohibiting exchange students tend to [point out that they take away resources that Americans could use. However, current data from US Study abroad actually demonstrate that a lot of US Students are in other countries to study and use their resources too. Another reason why foreign students should continue studying in the US is due the economy. In fact Huma Nisar shows in his article in “Views and News” that exchange students contribute $32 billion to the US economy in the year 15/16. This money is used and needed to improve the own education system. Equally important for those numbers are the relations that are built between countries and nations. …show more content…
“The importance of foreign students’ cultural, political and economic contribution has gained a fresh focus in the light of a recent travel ban on citizens from the Middle East and African countries.” – Humar
In the article, “Colleges Adapt to New Kinds of Students from Abroad,” Karin Fischer (2011) explains the increase of foreign students in U.S. universities leads to make more problems in campus and how universities are trying to overcome those problems and help foreign students to adapt to campus. Fischer explains the increase of the foreign undergraduate students due to the support from foreign governments. Fischer quotes Wesley Young, the director of services for international students and scholars at the University of California at Davis, to discuss that the increase of foreign undergraduate students especially requires more care and help than graduate students. While older students know what they need to do and what to do in U.S. university,
What is your first language? Do you remember your first words? How about learning to pronounce or spell words of your first language? Would you ever learn a foreign language because it sounds like a lot of work. Today some students are required to learn another language. However all students in the US shouldn't have to be required. Some reasons may include students never using the language, not learning another language would free up time, and students may not learn as much as people think. This is why students in the US shouldn't have to be required to learn another language.
Undocumented students have a harder time trying to pursue a higher education; this is due to the fact that they cannot receive federal aid. College is like a safe haven for these undocumented students. Higher education gives undocumented students the opportunity to better themselves as individuals. Higher education also allows undocumented students to pursue a better life for themselves and for their family. Every year over 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high school in the United States (Gray). Experts estimate that fewer than 6,500 of those undocumented students actually go on to attend college (Sheehy). One reason for why the amount is so low is because college is expensive for these undocumented students. Undocumented students are unable to achieve any of these goals, that is, unless they receive federal aid. It is sad to see undocumented students give up on their dream to attend college and get a higher education.
When someone hears the word immigrant most first think they are either poor, dirty, and illegal. What most people don’t look past the appearance they see walking past them. They don’t see the blood, sweat, or the long days and nights it took for that ‘immigrant’ to get where they are now. Also, most immigrants who travel to America travel here to give their children better lives. Therefore, those long days and nights will be worth it in the end when they can see their child walk across a stage and collect a diploma. However, undocumented children still are facing obstacles with not being allowed to attend community or state colleges, or receive in-state tuition, and most cannot receive financial aid.
Americans should go to college because they have all the benefits they can get here for example we get fafsa scholarships. Us
“America is woven of many strands. Our fate is to become one, and yet many” (Ralph Ellison qtd. in D 'Angelo). Although this quote may be over fifty years old, its meaning still stands; our country should be made of many different cultures and ethnicities that come together to make one United States. However, this cannot be accomplished if our nation does not allow for different cultures to learn about their own country and hold on to their heritage as well as gaining knowledge on the history of the United States. Thus, Mexican-American studies should not be banned in Arizona because contrary to the belief that learning about other cultural struggles is anti-American, actually focusing on the racial identities within the United States is an important step towards becoming a multicultural nation.
Fathers across the U.S are being taken away from their own homes forcibly. Small children are witnessing their own fathers be taken away helplessly, crying and screaming. Mothers and children left with no financial support and no father figure to have. Children start becoming a problem in school faced with anger and depression from their father being taken away. Hanging with the wrong crowd in order to not feel depressed could then lead to the use of drugs and drinking at an early age all because their father or mother was taken away. The families that suffer from this deportation aren’t guaranteed any financial help at all. Mothers are then left abandoned by their own government with their three or four children. The government overlooks the
Education is a really big part of life that is why every student deserves to get educated and have a career. Just because the kid’s parents made the mistake to bring them to the United States when they were small education should not be dined to them. Instead for living here all their life and learning all the things from here in
When I think of trophies, I think of winning. The first thought that jumps into my head is that someone is great at a sport, or someone has an amazing talent. But is that how it should be? I don't think so. According to Parker Abate, a long-time athlete and writer for the New York Times, "the trophies that are given to less-talented athletes who participate in youth sports do not have to say “1st Place,” “M.V.P.,” or “Champion.” These young athletes should be honored in lesser ways and all deserve to feel some form of accomplishment." I completely agree with Abate's thoughts on the subject; self-esteem is a huge part of life, and watching a teammate receive a trophy while not receiving one yourself can be extremely degrading. I believe trophies should be given to all participants in an activity regardless of their abilities because it will give them all self-confidence, remind them of their activities, and because they deserve to be rewarded for their work.
In the United States there are people that come from all around the world, and those people are classified into two different groups: legal and illegal. To be considered legal in the United States the person has either acquired a visa, a green card or citizenship. There is then the term illegal, which means that a person has come into the U.S illegally or has entered legally and over stayed their visa. I recently came to know that my best friend Wendoline and her parents are technically illegal. They came into the U.S. illegally from Mexico. I am now interested in learning more about education, work and healthcare in regards to illegal immigrants.
In article “ International Student Prepare for Additional College Fees” by Katy Hopkins,, the author explains the real reason for why most of the international students before finish the college or university they give up from education in United States, and they go to their country. The summary of the article is about going to college in the United states tends to be more expensive for international students than other students, whom are residents on a state. She also complains about why in some school even charge specific international students fees, often to pay for special programming or government-reguired international students tracking. For example In Ohio State University international students pay extra $500 fee per-semester. At the
However, the change from home to college can be difficult for international students (Mesidor & Sly, 2016). While some international students find it easy to adjust to the transition, others international students find it challenging to adjust to the transition (Mesidor & Sly, 2016). Studies show that international students experience many challenges as a result of language and cultural barriers, academic difficulties, financial difficulties, medical issues, housing concerns, food differences, alienation, homesickness, lack of social support system, racial discrimination, and cross-cultural loss) (Akanwa, 2015; Guzman et al., 2015; Mesidor & Sly, 2016; Sherry et al., 2010; Smith & Khawaja, 2011; Tung, 2011; Zhang & Goodson, 2010). According to Prieto-Welch (2016), international students as a group are regarded as a main minority population in campuses
Education is a never-ending learning process that has always been a piece of our life. As education is a building block in our lives, we are eager to put profoundly into our education. Good education will lead us to the bright future. With the fast advancement of public opinion, we have entered an era of information explosion which the necessity of studying abroad has turned into a developing pattern among youth. Most of the students feel that studying abroad is better than studying in local universities. As the saying goes, “the grass always looks greener on the other side of fence.” In this way, I believe that considering abroad have extraordinary points of benefits.
“In 2006 to 2007, according to the data compiled by the Institute of International Education, 582,984 students from all over the world were enrolled in American colleges and universities in a wide range of fields” (Carter, Paragraph 2, 2008). The United States has the highest number of students who are coming to study abroad than any other countries. Each year, the number of international students coming to the United States to obtain degrees is increasing by thousands, and home countries of these students are primarily India, China and Korea, all located in the whole different continent. But what are the motives of students who are crossing the sea to study? Their goal of studying abroad is to experience diversity and to adapt attitudes
International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First, they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying at has a very different way of life than theirs. Further more, the laws in that country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying at ASU, have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations.
