There is no greater comfort than that packed within a well-prepared meal. It amazes me how a dish could so exquisitely reflect one’s culture and emotions. As I matured and began to have a busier schedule, like many others, I struggled to find the time to enjoy proper meals. As I noticed the gradual toll on my physical and mental health, I realized the importance of integrating a quality diet. A further exploration on the nooks and crannies of human nutrition spurred a deep desire to understand one of the most critical issues of our time: a lack of sustainability and nutritious aspect in our meals. Hence, since 2015, I exposed myself further to the health field by interning with Balanced Living Singapore, where I worked alongside a team of passionate dietitians. During my time there, I was exposed to the complexity of health support. At the very outset, I was overwhelmed by the intricacy behind the wide range of health programs. Nevertheless, I was able to familiarize myself with the supplements and meal plans that built these programs. This experience had offered me a deeply valuable insight to the field of nutrition, and allowed me to apply what I learned in classrooms to deal with complex realities. Food to her represented an extension of culture along with gatherings of family which built the basis for her cultural identity throughout her life. Harris shares various anecdotes that exemplify how certain memories regarding food as well as the varied characteristics of her cultures’ cuisine left a lasting imprint on how she began to view food and continued to proceeding forward. she stats “My family, like many others long separated from the south, raised me in ways that continued their eating traditions, so now I can head south and sop biscuits in gravy, suck chewy bits of fat from a pigs foot spattered with hot sauce, and yes’m and no’m with the best of ‘em,.” (Pg. 109 Para). Similarly, since I am Jamaican, food remains something that holds high importance in my life due to how my family prepared, flavored, and built a food-based atmosphere. They extended the same traditions from their country of origin within the new society they were thrusted into.
