Hawaii is know as paradise, but as soon as you leave the airport you start to realize something. If you are a tourist visiting Hawaii. Once you start to drive around Oahu, you will notice homeless people or trash all around the island. Homelessness in Hawaii is a problem everyone can agree on. As I chose to write about homelessness, I am not picking on the homeless. Writing about the homeless issue in Hawaii doesn't only have an impact on our community but it also includes other states.
Being born and raised here on Oahu, I have not only realized that Hawaii is not the old Hawaii. I have realized our homeless community has been growing rapidly. Ever since I was ten I have fell in love with surfing. While going to school everyday is sometimes stressful. I like to go surfing either after class or before class starts. With Waikiki being my one of my favorite spots to surf. If we all don't know already, we know Waikiki has terrible parking. When I go down to Waikiki I like to park at the zoo. After I grab my surf board, I leave everything in my car because I clip my car key to my bathing suit and walk down to the beach. As the years go by the homeless population in Hawaii starts to grow. Each time I walk down Waikiki I have noticed more homeless people sleeping along Waikiki Ave. Lately I have been scared to walk down Waikiki Ave alone. At least every time I go surfing homeless people have tried to approach me.
The solution to all of this we may not have in the near
Hawaii was a beautiful place to come and relax. We are known for our amazing scenery. There are many problems on Oahu and one is having the homeless people living on the island. Further more there are many people on Oahu. The homeless are taking up more space on the island then we have to offer. The Return-to-Home program should be taken more seriously and reconsidered because the rising issue of homelessness.
Homelessness is an issue in American society today that affects anywhere from 800,000 to 3.5 million people. There are a substantial amount of people that are without shelter, food, or employment, and there are numerous other people affected by poverty and homelessness. People living in nearly every city in the United States are affected by homelessness due to the large amounts of homeless individuals living on the streets and begging for money, food, and other necessities. The issue of homelessness has been a constant problem since the conquering of the New World, and soup kitchens and homeless shelters have not been able to fully end homelessness. Especially today, with a lack of affordable housing and high unemployment rates, homelessness is prevalent.
Homeless is taking place throughout the world. That is an issue because some people still end back on the street or never had the opportunity to get off the street. Some inviduals may still be on the street and never go the opportunity to get off the street. Each inviduals have their own story of how they became homeless. Some inviduals may have ended up homeless due to unemployment, house caught on fire, was staying with a family member who later passed away, never had money save in case of a emergency and the list goes on. The issue that relate to housing for the homeless is that it is not enough space for everyone. The programs that is available tend to be overcrowded due to so many people being homeless with nowhere to go. Another issue with housing for the homeless is the environment in some programs. The environment can be harmful and unhealthy to an inviduals and especially a homeless child. When a child is homeless, that has a effect on them growing up as far as their mentality and their skills and ability of learning.
In America’s finest city, vivid thoughts of beaches, sunshine, and excitement all come to mind. Pictures that do not come to mind are the streets that are lined with tents, trash bags full of clothes, old sleeping bags, and items that have value to the owner. All across America, homelessness perpetuates to expand and worsen. Homelessness has been a growing issue these past few years in San Diego and residents are finally speaking out about it. This is a concern that requires to be taken care in one way or another. Components of homelessness include lack of shelter, food, and medical care. One’s who suffer from homelessness are all different ages, races, and have a unique story of their own. It is time for the city of San Diego to find a solution to this matter of contention and pursue to put an end to homelessness.
Here in Tahoe, we are lucky enough to experience a great quality of life, and only a few have to face the horrible life of poverty and homelessness. However, nationwide, even right outside the basin, homelessness is a growing epidemic across the country. There are many ways one can become homeless; for the most part poverty. There are also different concentrations of homeless in different types of terrain, such as urban or suburban areas. Last, there is the ever- growing homeless population, and how much money it costs us for others to live in poverty. These are the questions we ask ourselves about homelessness, and the only way we can help is to know the facts about this lingering
The topic I chose to write about is the homeless population in Hawaii. This is a modern day problem in the state of Hawaii, everybody that lives here and even visits can attest that Hawaii's homeless population is high, but did you know the state as Hawaii has the highest per capita homeless population in the nation? Over the past few years as the cost of living has gone up Native Hawaiians have been forced out of there homes and onto the street. Once being able to sleep and live where they choose, new laws are forcing homeless families in to smaller areas. Homeless communitites are showing up in every town and while maybe not on purpose destroying land. The sit/lie law covers most of Waikiki, this prevents homeless people from sitting on sidewalks
Homelessness has been a problem in Hawaii, and especially Oahu, for more than two decades. The homeless have overrun the islands but it is no surprise as the circum- stances allow for it. Multiple factors contribute to the ongoing dilemma including the high cost of living, Hawaii being an island state, and the expensive housing. The prob- lems that cause homelessness are not going to go away by themselves. Although the problem is not increasing, the numbers show that it isn’t decreasing and shouldn’t be unless the state and community acts.
The state of Hawaii has approximately 8,000 homeless people as of 2016. Have you ever imagined yourself being in that position? Homelessness is a serious problem in Hawaii since we have the highest rate in the nation per capita of homeless. In order for our economy to be fixed, specifically Downtown Honolulu, land, time, space, and especially money are things state officials should consider because rather money being put to Ala Moana, Honolulu Rail Transit, and the new International Market Place, it should be used towards homeless.
Homelessness became a huge problem in everywhere especially in the USA. Most people heard homeless people, and they saw homeless people in the streets, markets, or bridges. Most people never try to understand why there is much homelessness. Most people do not know any facts about them seem the truth of homelessness, the state of homelessness in the United States, and the effect on people from homelessness.
Everywhere you turn in the United States people are sitting on the corners of streets asking for assistance or digging in trash cans for meals. The epidemic of homelessness in the United States has reached an all-time high since the 1990’s. Unfortunately, the adage of people chose to be homeless was not accounting for families that live paycheck to paycheck and lose their job and therefore their housing because it is unavoidable. Alternatively, many individuals that are homeless have some type of mental illness or substance abuse problem thus creating a barrier to maintaining housing. Many of these individuals are incapable to preserve stable employment and have limited support to get off the streets. However, there are several programs that the federal government fund to assist with combating the problem of homelessness in America.
While walking down Ala Moana Park, I see many homeless laying around. Feeling a little unsafe because I do not know if they will come up and do something. As time flies by, they should not be living on the street. It is not pleasant seeing them where ever you go. They are eve-rywhere and, “at least 6,300 are homeless at given day” (Hope para 1). As the facts says in Hope, “Statewide, 12-15,000 people are homeless at some point of the year” (para 1). Each day, the numbers of hobos in Hawaii increase because they do not have a place to stay. The homeless in the upper 49 come down to Hawaii since our weather is not as bad compared to other states. In Hawaii, the homeless will be anywhere with their tents and carts. They would talk to the ones that passes by. Hawaii’s homeless population should be addressed by the government because they affect tourism in a negative way.
Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical climate, and (former) pineapple exports. This state is also number one in a lot of areas: worst traffic, highest cost of living, and highest homeless population. These are all important issues that most people outside of the islands do not think about when imagining a tropical paradise. The homeless population is a critical issue that will be discussed in this essay. Homelessness is a result of many factors: job loss, family disputes, foreclosure, and even drug addiction. In Hawaii, the main cause of homelessness is the rising cost of living. As housing costs
Given national recognition, The State of Homelessness in America benefits individuals needlessly suffering from a lack of shelter and a steady income. Efforts such as raising awareness and knowledge about the increase in the homeless population has sparked a number of organizations devoted to lessening the amount of individuals living on the streets in major cities. The state of homelessness is able to provide accurate information and statistics for viewers nationwide.
People drive or walk past a homeless person almost every day without thinking twice about the plight of that person or they may even unconsciously turn their heads the other way in disgust. Homelessness simply put, means without a home - therefore homelessness is an equal opportunity state that can happen to anyone. Even though we have seen some economic prosperity over the years, statistics show that the number of homeless remains very high. With this in mind, communities need to come together at the state, city, and individual level to come up with solutions to mitigate the spreading of this problem.
Homelessness has become an epidemic across the United States of America over the past 40 years. Despite the fact that most individuals are reminded of this problem on a daily basis when they see those without homes on the street, few solutions have been implemented that would fix the causes of this horrendous issue. Funding for programs that assist the homeless and homeless prevention programs is abysmal, while the costs incurred due to such a large homeless population continue to rise. Over the past century, a variety of acts and programs have been put in place that has dramatically affected the homeless population of the time, both positively and negatively. This problem can be directly linked to the outcomes of these acts and programs. In order to attack the root cause, the American population needs to look back at the history of homelessness and increase our awareness of what is truly preventing the homeless from mobilizing.
