Abstract Technology has a tremendous impact in everyone’s lives and plays a role every day in your daily routine. This modern technology has advance so much in such a short amount of time that we don’t even notice the effects it plays in our society. Technology may be beneficial for many things for example smartphones, the majority of the population un the United States possess one, but does it really help us or can it harm us sometimes? Technology has improved the communication field tremendously, now with the touch of a button you can send a message or a picture to someone that will reach the entire world in a matter of seconds. The evolution of social media platforms has revolutionized the way humans interact and communicate. We can …show more content…
2014). According to HIPPA regulation, patient information including but not limited to, photographs, information on a monitor screen, patient notes on a board that are facing a public space, PHI left a copy machine, or even shorthand notes on the whiteboards in patient rooms are a breach in confidentiality (“What is a HIPAA Violation Anyways? 2014). Healthcare workers are educated about privacy issues and are mandated to stand for by certain rules to secure patient confidentiality and privacy. Health insurance companies whom provide millions of workers in America with health insurance have a strong focus in protecting patients who are undergoing treatment to have privacy. It’s a backbone for many medical professions to help reduce health related frauds or abuse using values and policies. Many people use technology to display their thoughts, experiences and interactions with others every day. Many do not believe they are breaking any laws or compromising privacy issues by posting that picture of the girl they saw at Target or the post about the accident they saw coming into school, but in the healthcare field there are laws and provisions against this type of communication and we as nurses must follow them and obey them to not be on the other side of the law. Professional networking and education is really beneficial in healthcare. Healthcare
165). The HIPAA regulations are set as a protection of Personal Health Information (PHI) and all of its areas of concern, i.e. – name, condition, symptoms, etc… Legally, the nurse is not subjected to any clearly defined healthcare related laws, at the federal level, liable under the Privacy Acts of 1974 which protects any personal identification records or information relating to the patient’s privacy. The nurse takes photographs of the patient’s demographic information from his electronic health record which violates the regulations set forth by the Privacy Acts of 1974 (Privacy Act of 1974, n.d.). In many aspects of this scenario, a major concern lies on the nurse’s ethical, unethical, practice. The American Nurses Association (ANA) delineates in Provision Three of the Code of Ethics for Nurses “The nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health, and safety of the patient.” (ANA, 2015). The nurse is in many violations enough to end their career in this situation. The privacy of the patient is a right not a privilege. With the increase usage of social media, this invasion of privacy on the patient could potentially be leaked and could lead to jeopardizing the patient’s safety while in the hospital.
In nursing school HIPAA is one of the first and foremost topics covered. It is not simply a skill that can be tested on paper and filed away into the back of your mind. HIPAA is a crucial concept and practice that all workers in the field of healthcare must strictly adhere to. Although it should seem like common sense to respect the privacy and rights of a patient, there are far too many incidences where boundaries have been crossed, and information breached. The case of Carolyn Strom should serve as a pertinent example reinforcing how rapid the response can be when posting on social media, even if you think you are being discreet or anonymous. Patients need to be looked at not as chart numbers, but as humans who have a sense of pride
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) forces individuals and organization to realize that a patient’s data or the Patient Health information (PHI) is confidential. In her article, Sharpe, (2017), states “Examples of social media violations include posting verbal gossip about a patient (even if the name is not disclosed), sharing photographs or any form of PHI without written consent from the patient or guardian, mistakenly believing posts that are deleted can’t exist in cyberspace and sharing seemingly innocent pictures that have health-care information visible”.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPPA) assures patients their health information is private, protection, and secured between their healthcare team and no others unless specified by the patient. (Secretary 2013) Working in the healthcare field, it is easy to discuss patient information among co-workers and others. How many times have you noticed an individual talk on social media and knew exactly what they are talking about? Even though names or facilities are not mentioned, improper descriptions or discussions of a patient on social media can violate a patient’s
Patient confidentiality and their privacy are very serious matter in the eye of the law. “Security breaches threaten patient privacy when confidential health information is made available to others without the individual's consent or authorization” (Ozair, Jamshed, Sharma, & Aggarwal, 2015). Therefore, all healthcare staff members must review policies that addresses employee confidentiality, protection of patient privacy and rights. “Every nurse must be aware of that the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and how to maintain the confidentiality of patients. Furthermore, HIPPA offers protection and limitation of personal health information, and security to each patient. Besides every healthcare provider must to abide series privacy standards and HIPPA guidelines. “HIPAA requires health care organizations to offer education about private health information (PHI) to all employees and that employees review PHI policies annually”(Hood, Leddy, & Pepper, 2014). HIPPA Violation can occur with employees who are not really familiar with their regulations such as: volunteers, students, interns and employees who have access to patient information. Therefore, each of those people must be in compliance of training and obtain of understanding about privacy and security of patient
Being in healthcare field, the learner had seen so many privacy violation cases which cost the healthcare organizations resources, time, and money, and some of them lost the license of practices. In order to follow the compliance with the regulation, most healthcare organizations are switching from paper to electronic records to prevent the HIPPA violations. According to Smith, the most frequently and well-intentioned violators of privacy tend to be within the staff, managers and executives. Most of those violations are based upon what they see and hear in the healthcare setting other than what they read or see in the chart or computer screen (2001). While HIPPA has raised awareness regarding to patient’s right to privacy, it does not control the behaviors of healthcare workers. Nurses are still sharing the patients' information with friends or colleagues. Doctors are talking on the phone in public places about patients’ treatments and cares. Executives and managers are calling radiology and pathology to get reports for family members. Most of them are aware of HIPPA regulations, but they don’t aware of the consequences of HIPPA
A patient has many rights when they receive care. They have the right to privacy and confidentiality. Privacy allows an individual to decide what information is allowed to be disclosed to others (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2014, p.76). Similarly, confidentiality allows information to not be given out about a patient unless the patient states it is okay (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2014, p.76). Privacy and confidentiality are huge in the medical law. Nurses and other workers could get in serious trouble for breaking these rights. We all know these rights fall under the health insurance portability and accountability act (HIPPA). Although, there can be exceptions to these rights.
In this paper I will talk about the topic that technology will eventually destroy the entire civilization, since people are greedy and the revenge of nature. Technology 's advantages and disadvantages are a subject of constant discussion. Those who are against technology have the opinion that technology harms people and will ultimately ruin human civilization. Threats to the environment are pollution, resource depletion, greenhouse gas, and nuclear power abuse. Those who find technology advantageous, on the other hand, argue that technology benefits people. For example, the internet facilitates the communication between the diversity groups of people. Genetics increase people 's lives and cure
The society in which a person is born in is wildly different than the one they live in now. This raises the question if society is improving. Some think it does not improve, it only shifts. “Society is a wave. The wave moves onward, but the water of which it is composed does not” (Emerson 3). Technology advances so often that it becomes something that people depend on. Which could be the one of the reasons why people have become lazier. Not only that, but the internet exploits people’s private information, and and divides people with unpleasant comments. Technology should be used to help solve problems, but instead it has made people more dependable, lazy, and unpleasant.
Teenagers in this digital era are introduced to unprecedented amount of information about the ideal body through the use of the internet, which portrays this image through advertising, music videos, and celebrity social media accounts. With the introduction of connected technology, teen’s lust over a body that has most likely been photo-shopped and may be almost impossible to obtain. In other words, Photoshop sucks.
In today’s day, technology has literally evolved into everyone daily lives. The vast amount of information and capabilities now are endless in almost every aspect of life. More and more we are becoming dependent on it and it functioning for us. People now basically lose their minds if their internet connection goes down or they cannot access their Facebook account. Our daily errands from paying bills or going to the bank to depositing checks can now all be done by a snap of a picture or a click of a button. I think is it is absolutely incredible that you can now do all of your necessary shopping for things you want from sitting on your couch and next thing you know they will be at your doorstep with days, and now sometimes within hours. Now with all these great capabilities come the dark side. With all that positive stuff, there has to come the negative. Criminals have taken full advantage of these technological capabilities and used them in their benefit to commit crimes. These are crimes that can make almost anyone susceptible to becoming a victim. This is where cybercrime technology comes into play.
In Idaho, a group of parents and teachers lobbied against technology in the classroom. They disagreed with the way technology was placed in the classroom and felt that their voice about the subject wasn’t being heard so they protested. Technology plays a huge role in today’s society. It seems to be replacing human interaction and changing society and it is finding its way into classrooms more and more. Technology is not the main cause for why test rates are low, but when it comes down to the math section in the ACT Standardized test students fiddle with their calculator because that’s the only way they learned to solve problems. Schools get so focused on using technology that they don’t teach students how to work things out manually. Education Week reported a study in 2007. The results of the study noted that “no difference in academic achievement between students who used the technology in their classrooms and youngsters who used other methods.” Technology is supposed to improve academics, not keep it stagnant. If those are the results of technology in the classroom then the time spent using computers needs to be replaced with something that is productive.
Throughout history, our ingenuity has provided us with a resource in which our society has become greatly dependent on. Coal, a solid stone like fossil fuel, has been found to be useful in many different ways like refining materials, use of it 's by-products and heat, but coal has been mainly used as a source of energy used to power machinery and produce electricity. It is the resource that powered the machines responsible for the industrial revolution nearly two hundred and fifty years ago, and sparked the birth of what society as we know it. This paper will discuss the history of coal and the role it plays in creating the building blocks for modern society, including the early uses of coal, leading to today 's use for coal, the adverse effects and how it has become a resource in which the world has become dependent on.
Close to ninety percent of Americans currently own a computerized gadget such as a computer, cell phone, Mp3 player, tablet computer, game console, e-book reader, etc. (Gahran). These are gadgets that some people use in their everyday lives whether they’re at home lounging around playing on their cell phone, watching television, at school, or at work having to use the computer to get their job done. Technology is everywhere, even when you don’t notice it, like fast food restaurants with touch screen cash registers, coke machines, the fancy play tables with lights in them and some restaurants even have mini tablets that you can pay on from your table without the struggle of finding the waitress and waiting on her to do it. Technology is something that the world seems to rely on for almost everything that we need to know while leaving more negative affects rather than positives. The more up-to-date technology becomes, the more it seems to overwhelm our lives (Nables).
There is no doubt that technology plays a big role in society today. Whether people like it or not, one thing is definite: technology is not going anywhere. Having grown up in the midst of the digital revolution, technology was going to be a part of my life, and it most definitely has. No matter if it is the Internet, computers, cell phones, tablets, video games; I have been exposed to all of them. However, of all the pieces of technology I have used, the one I cannot live without would have to be my laptop. This year has opened my eyes to how important it is to have a nice laptop. Whether I am taking notes in class, doing research online, typing a paper, surfing the web, or Skyping my family back home, I am always using my laptop. Sure, I still use my cell phone a lot, but I honestly do not use social media on it as I used to. So really the main purposes for my cell phone are what they should be for; making phone calls and sending texts. If I did not have a laptop, it would make going to school more challenging, I would spend much more time at the library using their computers and could not enjoy lying in bed watching my favorite show on Netflix. Of course I could handle not having a laptop. However, after completing my first year away at school, my eyes have been opened to the importance of having one, and I have seen how dependent I am on mine.
