The topic for this paper is technology in the classroom. Per the Merriam-Webster dictionary, technology is defined as “a manner of accomplishing a task especially using technical processes, methods, or knowledge.”. Technology in the classroom started way back in the early 1980’s. Classrooms are changing every day, with the never-ending improvements of technology. Technology today is playing a large role in students’ lives, from the elementary rooms, to full computer labs. Technology hasn’t always been the technology we think of today. When thinking of the technology that was in the classroom in the 1900s it was chalkboards, pencils, and projectors called the Magic Lantern. In the article titled “The Evolution of Technology in the Classroom” by Purdue University “Technology has always been at the forefront of human education.” Advancements in technology show that students want tools to help them learn in a more advanced way.
Computers have been around since the 1930’s. When the first everyday use computer came out in the early 80’s, it weighed 24 pounds. A weird fact is that Times named the first computer “Man of the Year”. The major producer in computers and the maker of iPad came out with their first computer in 1984, which was called the PowerBook. In 1993, the National Science Foundation let anyone use internet for commercial use. A statistic from Purdue.edu, 83 percent of college students have a laptop. The use of technology in the classroom is an important tool to utilize as an educator. Technology allows for educators to have instant access to a plethora of resources that would not be available if technology was not used in the classroom. Teachers have the ability to plan lessons, create presentations, and have interactive games for students to use as a learning tool through the use of different digital devices. Modern day technology is rapidly advancing and providing teacher with many different tools to use in the classroom to enhance the students learning experience.
Technology of the past 20 years has become a focal point of teaching and learning. As a teacher, it is my job to facilitate the learning for an individual by creating an environment that not only conducive for learning, but also places the child in a position to discover and learn them for themselves. Technology has given teachers to opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom, and has begun to reshape their role in the learning process.

Technology has dramatically influenced our modern day culture in several ways; we now operate completely different compared to the past. In fact, it can be shown in many tasks that we very rarely complete a simple operation without the use of technology. For example, washing dishes, heating food, doing our homework, and even communication are all examples of how technology has evolved simple tasks. Even furthermore, technology has changed the way education has been taught and received in American classrooms. However, technology was not always so highly advanced in American schools. In fact, a classroom in the 1950’s had little to no technology; one would find blackboards, chalk, handouts, and quite possibly a film-strip projectors. However, even the “advancement” of a film-strip projector required much work, due to the fact that many teachers were obligated to travel great distances to retrieve a film-strip for the projector (Cuban, Larry). On the contrary, things have significantly changed in the 21st century American classroom. In fact, it would be quite common to see laptops, televisions, and other cutting-edge technology in a significant amount of public schools. In today’s age, most students can operate any piece of technology. Many schools do not allow students to use technology to the best of their advantage while utilizing their resources to make their own lives easier when writing an essay, or using the internet to research certain subjects for a class. Technology has become more advanced in recent years and computer companies have started focusing on the aspect of technological teaching.
Common criticism of the use of technology in education is that value is not added to the educational processes or outcomes. Many believe that technology represents an additional cost, extra time lost during teaching and may not properly address the many struggles to improve learning for students. Indeed, many find older versions of computers that have no source of power or the inability to provide basic functionality provides no use for the classroom and would rather teach traditionally. For example, Mike Trucano researched schools in Africa and recognized a school in Kenya who acknowledged they had one computer lab of which the computers laid unused because the school did not have any teachers or students who were trained well enough to use them. Indeed, many studies conclude that “simply putting computers into schools is not enough to impact student learning.”

Technology is used in many ways as a classroom help. Many are still wondering though: How can technology be perceived in a class room?
On a daily basis, both businesses and individuals rely on technology. It cannot be denied that technology has become part of our everyday life. As individuals, we all depend on technology, either for education, health purposes, transportation, communication, romantic relationships, and/or business growth . It is impossible to explore how each advancement in technology has impacted our lives as well as how it will impact the future, but we can briefly explore the major advancements. Technology impacts the environment, people individually, and the society as a whole.
IPads and all of this new technology is being used more to play Flappy Bird than get any real schoolwork done. With new innovations in technology, schools have decided to incorporate devices like the Smartboard or IPad, but we do not know how to use them effectively to teach. Sure, these devices could be of some help, but the school board has not effectively taught teachers how to fully utilize the very equipment they are using to teach their students. Even with a firewall that can block certain websites and media, if a student really wants to slack off in the middle of class, they will find a way. However, if teachers were taught how to fully implement their devices in the classroom, students would not want to waste an entire class period playing Minecraft on the IPad or Apple computer. After all, most teachers will spend days trying to figure out the new systems that have been thrown in their face. Just think of the disastrous consequences and wasted money just to try to get a Smart Board to work. If we do not teach and properly implement better technology, we will continue to waste both students and teachers time, as shown by Four County Career Center and it 's use of the iPad and Smart Board.
Fifty years ago writing required a strenuous amount of effort for the common man. A person would have to take a walk to the library, meticulously search through books for information and finally blow dust off of the good ol’ typewriter to start typing. Today, that same person can simply launch their computer to write an article without ever having to leave their seat. The positive uses of technology goes much deeper than just writing articles; technological growth allows for better education as well as being imperative for survival.
Across the U.S., technology used in education has been increasing exponentially. Every learning institution ranging from elementary school to college have incorporated technology into their teachings. Online textbooks, quizzes, notes, and classes are all examples of how education has been utilizing technology. While technology has a place in education, not everything in education needs to involve technology.
