Privileges are things that a person receives that gives them an advantage over most people (Merriam-Webster). These are benefits that only certain people receive for being in a certain group or discourse. Peggy McIntosh, director of the Wellesley College Center for Research on Women, wrote “White Privilege and Male Privilege” and states “I think whites are carefully taught not to recognize white privileges, as males are taught not to recognize male privilege” (605). She argues that whites and males receive certain privileges, yet they do not even notice them. This shows that different races and women are still put at a disadvantage, but the people who receive the benefits are blind to the problem. Many people will argue that she is correct
In Social Care there is an accountability for the welfare of the individual, whether they are being cared for or enabled to be independent. The enabler has responsibility for the individual, and the Company that provides the service to the client has responsibility towards both the enabler and the individual. They are answerable to families, CQC, the local council, social care workers and the police.
In the Peculiar Benefits Roxane Gay talks about privilege how it work in the real world. How others don’t have the same privilege as an individual thus making people viewing the world in a spectrum. Privilege is a special right, advance or immunity granted or available only to one person or group of people. We have all these privilege race, gender, heterosexuality and etc…. all give us the frame work of our society that we live today. The WordPress page stated that people are classified by those who encounter them and since this viewer are so influences by the constructed norm. On this page the discus of privilege is still in progress because it widely topic in our society. In Peculiar Benefit Roxane Gay use ethos, pathos and logos to discuss that everyone don’t have the same privilege but we tend to think privilege is not an issue and everyone have the privilege.
An alumni group, Check Your Privilege organized by Dr. Ja’Nina Walker, works to raise student and faculty awareness about privilege on a San Francisco campus and increase social equality. The group defines privilege as “unearned access to social power based on membership in a dominant social group.” The group desires to increase consciousness about privilege, especially in the among social justice influences. They work to bring privilege into regular public discussion and urge those with privilege to use it for public benefit.
To be a person, requires intersectionality. Intersectionality is the idea that people do not function on only one aspect of their being, but instead, function on every aspect. Aspects that include race, gender, ability, etc. With this intersectionality comes innumerable categories that lie on the scale of privileged, oppressed, or somewhere in between. To be privileged is to have advantages that are not necessarily earned, and instead come with a specific, usually uncontrollable feature, such as race, gender, class, and ability. To be oppressed is to have disadvantages that are not earned, but instead come with the same uncontrollable categories as privilege. Even cis-gendered, heterosexual, white, men have aspects of their intersectionality that might not place them at the top of the privilege hierarchy. And it is in these complications where people start to place doubts on their own privileges. It is important to realize that it is nearly impossible to have privilege in every single way or oppression in every single way, yet, this is not an excuse to deny privileges. Even with some oppressions, some are still granted more advantages than others. To delve into this deeper, analyzing writings from established writers, such as Peggy McIntosh and Devon Carbado become necessary.
White Privilege is a thesis about positive racial discrimination. In exploring this thesis and in the effort of joining this decades old conversation, I think it worthwhile to fully engage Peggy McIntosh's thesis. White Privilege contains a comprehensive list of privileges that I will now check my privilege by.
The ways some of my privileges are related to race are to the fact that my mother is white. She is very educated, and a successful business owner. By having the upper hand in life, my mother was able to take care of me great.
-Some other examples of experiencing privilege is religion. I feel that Christians and Catholics have the privilege since the US is predominantly Christian and due to that muslims and jews get looked down upon because of politics and
Johnson states that privilege is prominent when one group has something of importance that is not offered to others because of the type of groups they belong to, rather than something they have done or failed to do. The first privilege that the author talks about is unearned entitlements, which are things like feeling safe in public, being accepted, and valued for what they can contribute. When unearned entitlement is restricted to certain groups, however, it becomes a form of privilege called “unearned advantage”. The next privilege that Johnson talks about was conferred dominance, which goes a step further by giving one group power over another. For example, men controlling conversations with a woman is grounded in the cultural assumption that men are supposed to dominate women.
“Privilege.” What really is a privilege? Do you even consider yourself privileged? Well, the word “privilege” means “a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people” and whether or not you consider yourself privileged really depends on how you define the word and whether you take it for granted or not.
If you know the requirements for getting in the associations, it will make your life much easier through interacting, external environment, amount of resources, and demographics. The most research question among the three questions that have an impact to me is what explains member entry into associations. Entering any organizations, it’s important to know the demographics, how they operate outside of the environment, and. how much human resources is available for employees. For example, I was volunteering last semester at the All Stars Project. I was called for the interview, and I noticed that most of the people that work there are blacks, between ages 35 and up. During the interview, they asked if I can hand out flyers outside and they replied and said this cannot be done because I am a female. Throughout Newark, any organizations out there are affected by the external environment. I think solidary benefits have an impact on how individuals interact in the association. According to Powell (2006), the author states that members can join an association in order to make friends with like-minded individuals (p.528). I don’t see how this statement can be reasonable; when I am thinking about it, it’s just like going to a club. I think membership association is a committed organization based on its mission and values.
It is not a defence to a charge of rape that the victim was the defendant’s spouse or they were still living in the same residence. Forcible rape of a spouse still constitute rape. However, the question of consent can be difficult because the victims consent can change and the marriage argued as a form of implied consent. The marital rape exemption provides that a spouse who forcibly engages in sex without consent with the wife cannot be held liable for rape. In Regna v R, it was held that a husband was not guilty for rape committed in his wife because marriage serves as consent provided the couple are still married. However, where the two are living apart the implied consent to marital
The need for affiliation is the need that motivated me the most. As an introvert, it is hard for me to approach and make friend with strangers. I always feel pressure to meet new people, because I don't want to give them a bad impression of me. Since it is hard for me to make friends with others, I always feel the need to do things that can make people who knew me to like me more. I like to be a role model that someone can look up to. I am always open to help people that in need, and my happiness is seeing people happy and appreciate my help. Therefore, the need for affiliation is what drives me to work hard to achieve my goals and bring happiness to everyone around me.
