What did these two people do to the civilians These two killed fourteen and injured seventeen innocent people. The people were in shock and tears because of the incident. The people inside were forced to find cover and hide so they wouldn’t get shot. This is tuck in their minds forever and most will have ban feelings about being in gun-free zones.
In today’s society, there is plenty to talk about. Whether it be about the President, the weather change, there is always something to talk about. One of the major issues that has been talked about for an extended period of time is gun control and the issues that follow it. There are two specific articles that were chosen today; one of which from the Chicago Sun Times website, and the other from the New York Times.
Gun free zones do not work like they were designed to. A gun free zone is an area where guns are not allowed, it is a federal law. In 1990, the law was purposed by Joseph Biden and signed into law by the president George H. W. Bush. In 2012 a gunman attacked Sandy Hook Elementary School. The gunman killed twenty children and six teachers. The school was a gun free zone and had no security with no firearms on campus. That same year in Aurora, Colorado, the Cinemark Movie Theater released “The Dark Night Raises” at midnight on July 20th. The killer had twenty-one movie theaters to choose from that were playing this movie. He chose the only one that was a gun free zone. On the July 23, 2015 Chattanooga, Tennessee, a man killed four Marines and a sailor in the Navy. The recruiting office where the men were murdered was a gun free zone. The gunmen knew it was a gun free zine and he wanted to carry out an ISIS terrorist act. Gun free zones do not always prevent crime from happening. Law-abiding citizens die from gun free zones.
As the shooting came to a conclusion, people immediately attacked guns. Protests and mobs of angry people would chant their message that guns needed to go, in order to prevent another massacre like this. But the
Areas we enter are sources of Security Theater that is not address and that contributes to the increase of shootings: in specific I am referring to “Gun free zones.” Over 98% percent of mass shootings and gun violence occurs in areas where guns are restricted or completely banned (Crime Prevention Research, 2018). Out of a hundred fifty shootings only three would not occur in a “gun free zone.” Signs are often posted outside buildings, movie theaters, and parks to supposedly prevent those that may be carrying a gun, concealed or otherwise, from bringing it on to the premises. However, the only protection that a “gun free zones” provides is helping people feel that they are safe without doing anything to ensure their safety. Only law abiding citizens will follow the rules put into place to make an area a “gun free zone.” This causes a disarming of the people who could
Gun regulation has been a controversial topic since they were first established as a weapon. People for and against gun regulation provide strong arguments for their side. Gun regulation has fluctuated over time due to changes in office. Being a democracy prevents us from having consistency. As a nation we continue to change regulations on guns because of the different views our democracy allows us to have. The main aspects pose the most problems in gun control are violence, illegal sale of guns, and mental health checks.
June 12th 2016. At first glance this date means nothing to many, but as you dive deeper you realize that this date claims the deadliest mass shooting in United States history and the largest loss of life due an act of terrorism since 9/11. This is in reference to the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida where 49 people were murdered and another 53 patrons were injured. This is at the hands of Omar Mateen, 29, who was an American born citizen but was a self proclaimed ISIS member. Mateen called 9-11 mid attack trying to plead his allegiance to ISIS. After a three hour standoff with club goes still inside a SWAT team eventually rammed into a side of the building and the gunman was shot by the police force.
“Are gun free zones worth having in American schools?” Through the recent struggles in policy related to mass school shootings in gun free zones, I believe that we should evaluate current policies and if need be, propose new policies, to limit or eliminate mass shootings in schools, which can and should be prevented. A common misconception when talking about ‘gun free zones’ is that Gun free zones can easily be misunderstood as meaning zero guns, but rather (usually) means that an unauthorized person cannot carry in that area (which may vary from state to state). But the issue isn’t with the misconception, but more so with the lack of safety that schools have or so we think.
Gun control should be implied more than it is now. More gun laws should be created in order to tame society. Americans own over 300 million guns. According to (Everitt,Ladd) the author of the article “Does the U.S. Need Tougher Gun-Control Laws?” There are 99 gun deaths a day and some who committed the crime were not eligible to obtain or carry a weapon. More teens are being killed with guns than any other crime. Teens are not eligible to obtain guns due to the age requirement that is 21 years of age with a background check. There are gun show loopholes were 18 year olds can go and buy a gun without a license and background check. “The major cities chiefs association endorses closing the gun show loophole” according to Richard Perez-Pena the
Columbine High School, Littleton, Colorado, 1999; Trolley Square Mall, Salt Lake City, Utah, 2007; Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, Virginia, 2007; Westroads Mall, Omaha, Nebraska, 2007; New Life Church, Colorado Springs, Colorado, 2007; Pearl High School, Pearl, Mississippi, 1997. All of these, except Colorado Springs were in areas designated as gun-free zones, places where state, federal, and/or private property laws and regulations forbid people from carrying a firearm, except law enforcement or security personnel. The only difference between the first four incidents and the last two is the gunman was confronted by someone else with a gun before law enforcement could arrive. Do you feel
Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the United States yet in 2016 there were 762 gun related homicides, 3,550 shooting incidents, and 4,331 shooting victims. Despite strict gun laws Chicago had one of the deadliest years in history, so are the laws really working? Strict gun control does not mean that the amount of gun related crime will decrease. So, what is the point in making strict gun control laws?
I hate to read about what the people had to go through because nobody should have to go through this and Campbell does shine some light into what these people had to go through. In the article Campbell wrote about how peoples hands were chopped off by RUF units band were then sent wandering hopelessly in order to spread the message of terror. He also wrote how so called peacekeepers were so inept in their defense of the civilians that that charges of human right violations were given against them as many times as the
Many would agree that there is a distressing amount of violence in America. Violence takes place in many forms, in different severities, and in many places. In an effort to continually make our society more civilized, ways to stop these violent acts from occurring are always being contemplated. There are many ways to approach the epidemic in America, but one that has increasing popularity is applying more strict gun control laws. Strict gun laws are viewed by many to be a step in the right direction, but they are actually a potential danger to the citizens of the United States.
It is 10 years from now and you friend are living in a nice house with a family. They are home cleaning while their husband is at work and their kids are at school. They hear someone break in and they need to protect themselves, but they do not have a gun because the government banned them. How are they going to protect themselves? The person breaking into their house will not stop and think: “Oh crap, it is against the law to break into someone’s house and hold them at gunpoint, I need to leave now”. Criminals do not follow laws. There has been a debate going on for years about whether or not we need more gun-free zones or more background checks when someone wants to buy a gun. There are people in the United States that want to amend the second amendment and there are people who want to get rid of gun-free zones. Getting rid of gun-free zones will help reduce crime in the United States and help create a safer home.
First of all, constraining concealed weapons in certain locations would make those “gun-free zones” an easy target for criminals. Although, proponents of prohibiting concealed weapons believe that banning concealed weapons will reduce crimes and ensure that the location is free of gun violence, as stated on Fututirty.com. In reality, it is reasonably obvious that “gun-free zones” only attract criminals. If a criminal sees that citizens are not allowed to carry guns into a building, the criminal is most likely to attack that building, since there will be no one that can attack back with a gun, making it an easy target. As John R. Lott, who is an economist and was formerly chief economist at the United States Sentencing Commission, asserts on Foxnews.com, “The horrible tragedy last night that left nine people dead at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church
“Hours earlier, he was a happy 4-year-old who loved Ironman and the Hulk and all the Avengers. Now, as Bryson Mees-Hernandez approached death in a Houston hospital room, his brain swelling through the bullet hole in his face, his mother assured the boy it was OK to die.” (Foley) https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/10/14/ap-usa-today-gun-accidents-children/91906700/ Bryson Mees was spending the night at his grandparents last january. He found a 22. Caliber Derringer his grandmother kept under the bed when he accidently shot himself. My experience has made me realize the importance of gun safety and training.
